FIA-fluorimetric determination of thiamine.

A flow injection-fluorimetric determination of thiamine is reported. The procedure is based on the oxidation of the analyte with potassium hexacyanoferrate(III) immobilized on an anionic exchange resin; the fluorescence is monitored in aqueous basic solution. Concentrations of the vitamin of 0.1-4 ppm have been determined; the relative standard deviation was 1.8%. The injection rate was 28 samples/h. The influence of other substances and the determination of the drug in a pharmaceutical formulation are also reported.

Steady and oscillatory shear behaviour of semi-concentrated starch suspensions

The viscoelastic moduli G’ and G” of aqueous suspensions with 40% (w/v) normal corn starch (NCS) and waxy corn starch (WCS) were determined by oscillation rheometry. The oscillatory shear flow experiments at heating from 30° to 75 °C and maintaining at this temperature showed changes from a behaviour predominant viscous (G”>>G’) to predominant elastic (G’>G”) for both starches at 60.5 °C for WCS, respectively 70,85 °C for NCS, WCS having higher values of G’ and G” as NCS. After the gelatinisation temperature was attired, NCS showed no significant changes, both moduli remaining relatively constant. Interactions of volatile aroma compounds with protein in aqueous solutions, especially whey proteins, have received significant attention in recent years. This work attempts to improve our understanding of the mass transfer in multiphasic systems, such as emulsions at the lipid−water interface, and to reveal the role of β-lactoglobulin in the release rate of solutes. For this purpose the rotating diffusion cell has been used. Liquid and vapour water transfer through whey protein/lipid emulsion films

BACKGROUND: Edible films and coatings based on protein/lipid combinations are among the new products being developed in order to reduce the use of plastic packaging polymers for food applications. This study was conducted to determine the effect of rapeseed oil on selected physicochemical properties of cast whey protein films. Water vapour permeability, thermal and wetting properties of whey protein isolate based edible films

Abstract This study deals with the effect of whey protein isolate (WPI) and glycerol (GLY) used as a plasticizer on some physical properties of cast whey protein isolate (WPI) films. Films were prepared from heated (80 °C for 30 min) aqueous solutions of WPI at 7, 8, 9 and 10% (w/w), GLY (40%, w/w, of WPI) and WPI at 8% (w/w), GLY (30, 40, and 60%, w/w, of WPI). For all types of films, water vapour permeability for four relative humidity differentials (30–100%, 30–84%, 30–75%, and 30–53%), surface and thermal properties were measured. Soret coefficient of trace ions determined with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in a thin cell. Theory and measurement

The tendency of a substance to migrate due to a temperature gradient is known as thermodiffusion or the Soret effect. We believe that this is the first work that describes the study of the Soret effect using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in a non-isothermal thin cell, and shows how the Soret coefficient can be determined from these measurements. The effect of a temperature gradient in a thin cell is analyzed, both theoretically and experimentally. Our theoretical modeling of the system predicts the effect of key parameters to the impedance spectra. Experimentally we determine the Soret coefficient of the redox couple Fe(CN)64−/Fe(CN)63− in an aqueous KCl solution. It is found that …

Abstract When solutes show acid–base behaviour inside the working pH of a reversed-phase liquid chromatographic (RPLC) column, besides the type and percentage of organic modifier, pH can be included to improve the possibilities of separation. Optimisation based on a retention model is an economical and reliable way to achieve the best resolution. Effect of different aqueous solutions of pure salts and salt mixtures in reverse electrodialysis systems for closed-loop applications

Abstract Reverse Electrodialysis (RED) in a closed-loop arrangement is a viable way to convert low-grade heat into electric power. The present work experimentally investigates the use of pure salt- and equimolar two salts-water solutions as feeds in a lab-scale RED unit.
