Free energy of transfer ofn-nitroalkanes fromn-octane to water at 25�C

Calorimetric determinations of the thermodynamics of transfer of nitromethane, nitroethane, 1-nitrobutane, 1-nitropentane, and 1-nitrohexane from n-octane to water at 25°C have been made. Transfer free energies calculated by four different models agree reasonably well with observations. Calculations indicate that the dipolar part of the transfer free energy depends only on the dipole moment and size of the-C−NO2 group and is independent of the length of the alkyl chain in nitroalkanes.

Water-soluble, cyclodextrin-functionalized semiconductor nanocrystals: Preparation and pH-dependent aggregation and emission properties

Abstract Using peramino-functionalized β-cyclodextrin molecules for phase.transfer of hydrophobic CdSe multishell nanocrystals into water, we obtained hydrophilic nanoparticles with high quantum yield (up to 50%). At pH > 9, the aqueous solution of these nanocrystals remained stable for several months. The nanoparticles showed a strong influence of the pH of the aqueous solution on the emission of the nanocrystals: the quantum yield varied reversible from ∼10% at pH=6 to ∼50% at pH=14, an effect which according to particle size characterization by dynamic light-scattering and asymmetric flow field-flow fractionation has mainly been attributed to reversible partial aggregation of the hydroph…

Metachromatic behavior of methylorange in the presence of ionenes

The addition of different ionenes, polycations with defined structure and charge distances, to methylorange1 in very dilute solutions of water resulted in an observable shift of the absorption maxima from 464 nm to shorter wavelengths. The extent of this so-called metachromasy effect was found to be dependent on the nature of the hydrophobic unit of the polymer backbone. The comparison of UV/VIS spectra's of these solutions with the absorption of a film of a model substance — a dication with methylorange as counteranion — lead to the conclusion that ionenes undergo an exchange of the counteranions when added to a dilute solution of methylorange. Polyaspartamide-graft- Polymethacrylate Nanoparticles for Doxorubicin Delivery

A new PHEA-IB-PMANa + copolymer has been synthesized and its pH-induced self-assembly has been investigated in an aqueous medium. PHEA-IB-PMANa + formed nanoparticles with diameters from 25 to 50 nm upon protonation of the carboxylic acid moieties dislocated along the grafted polymethacrylate sodium salt side chains. The physico-chemical characterization of the nanoparticles was performed using light scattering, zeta-potential measurements, SEM, and AFM. Thermal diffusion of dextran in aqueous solutions in the absence and the presence of urea.

The Ludwig-Soret effect was studied for aqueous solutions of dextran in the temperature range 15T55 degrees C taking into account the effect of the addition of urea. In the absence of urea, the Soret coefficient S(T) changes sign; it is positive for T45.0 degrees C but negative for T45.0 degrees C. The positive sign of S(T) means that the dextran molecules migrate toward the cold side of the fluid; this behavior is typical for polymer solutions, whereas a negative sign indicates the macromolecules move toward the hot side. The synthesis of linear carbohydrate modified polysiloxanes has been successfully performed by hydrosilation of functionalized and protected carbohydrate derivates. The functionalization (allyl glycosilation) may be applied to a wide variety of reducing carbohydrates. In this study, mono-, di- and oligosaccharides were converted by a simple two-step reaction (β-acetylation and allyl glycosilation) into active compounds, allowing the polymer analogous addition to random poly[dimethyl-co-hydromethyl]siloxanes (hydrosilation). Well-Defined Multi-Amino-Functional and Stimuli-Responsive Poly(propylene oxide) by Crown Ether Assisted Anionic Ring-Opening Polymerization

Multi-amino-functional poly(propylene oxide) (PPO) copolymers were synthesized by the anionic ring-opening copolymerization (AROP) of N,N-diethyl glycidyl amine (DEGA) and propylene oxide (PO). A solvent free synthesis route using potassium counterions and crown ether for the AROP enabled controlled (co)polymerization with full conversion. The strategy provided access to PPO-b-PDEGA block copolymers, statistical PPO-co-PDEGA copolymers, and, for the first time, PDEGA homopolymer. Interactions of quinine with polyacrylic and poly-L-glutamic acids in aqueous solutions

Abstract Drug-loaded polymers provide an attractive form for controlled drug delivery systems. A proper knowledge of polymer–drug interactions can aid in the designing of polymers for various drug-delivery applications. In this paper we have investigated the interaction of a drug such as quinine, with synthetic macromolecules such as poly(acrylic acid), PAA, and poly(L-glutamic acid), PGA, at pH 7 and 37 °C by fluorescence spectroscopy and viscometry. The analysis of the binding isotherms revealed that the association process is positive cooperative up to a threshold concentration and then it is negative. Solution Properties and Potential Biological Applications of Zwitterionic Poly(ε-N-methacryloyl-l-lysine)

Poly(e-N-methacryloyl-l-lysine) (PMALys) was synthesized by free radical polymerization yielding a zwitterionic polymer with Mw = 721 000 g mol–1. The polymer dissolves in pure water as well as in aqueous salt solution up to 5 M NaClO4 and over wide range of pH values (1.3 ≤ pH ≤ 12.7) as single chains without any sign for aggregate formation. The zwitterionic polymer shows an expanded random coil structure at and close to isoelectric conditions and further expands upon addition of acid and base, respectively. Viscometric study of mixtures of neutral and charged polymers in aqueous solution

The viscosity behaviour of aqueous mixtures formed by a polyelectrolyte (A) and a neutral polymer (B) such as polystyrene sulfonate (PSS)-polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and polylysine (PLL)-PVP has been studied at 25°C. The intrinsic viscosity and viscosity interaction parameter of each polymer in water have been determined and have served us to estimate the compatibility of the different mixtures according to two different methodologies: (i) mixtures of two polymers in water as solvent and (ii) mixtures of either polymer A OFB in a solvent formed by either polymer B or A in water ("polymer solvent method").
