The paper investigates the collaboration between an artist and an architect who were among the main protagonists of the Italian cultural scene of the first half of the twentieth century: Arturo Dazzi and Marcello Piacentini. Starting from the plaster model which portrays them together and that reproduces a detail of a monumental work conceived by both between 1924 and 1931, the Arco ai Caduti of Genoa, the analysis will briefly focus on the occasions when the two characters collaborated for the realization of monumental civil and religious works until the post-war period. Sensitivity and mode spectrum of a frequency-output silicon pressure sensor

The vibrational mode spectrum of a silicon vibrating pressure sensor is investigated. Particular attention is given to the analysis of the vibration shapes, quality factors and relative sensitivity of the resonance frequencies as a function of pressure. It is shown that a pressure sensitivity of a few parts per million at one atmosphere can be achieved. Some comments are also made regarding an improved design of the device.

Abstract Small urban water bodies, like ponds or canals, are often assumed to cool their surroundings during hot periods, when water bodies remain cooler than air during daytime. However, during the night they may be warmer. Sufficient fetch is required for thermal effects to reach a height of 1–2 m, relevant for humans. In the ‘Really cooling water bodies in cities’ (REALCOOL) project thermal effects of typical Dutch urban water bodies were explored, using ENVI-met 4.1.3. In many countries, users acquire private tanks to reduce their vulnerability to water scarcity. In such conditions, water managers often apply intermittent distribution in order to reduce the water volumes supplied to the users. This practice modifies the hydraulic behaviour of the network and determines competition among users that need to collect enough water resource for their uses. Intermittent distribution is thus responsible for the inequality that can occur among users: those located in advantaged positions of the network are able to obtain water resources soon after the service period begins, while others have to wait much longer, after the network is full. A hydraulic model was developed in order to evaluate the potential energy recovery from the use of centrifugal pumps as turbines (PATs) in a water distribution network characterized by the presence of private tanks. The model integrates the Global Gradient Algorithm (GGA), with a pressure-driven model that permits a more realistic representation of the influence on the network behaviour of the private tanks filling and emptying. This study presents the results of research on heat loss from various types of residential buildings through ventilation systems. Experimental research was done to analyse the effectiveness of ventilation systems of different types and determine the parameters of air discharged via the ventilation ducts. A model of heat loss from the discharge of exhaust air outside through air ducts has since been developed. Experiments were conducted on three experimental systems of building ventilation: gravitational, mechanical, and supply-exhaust ventilation systems with heat recovery. After a brief survey on the previous studies on the Sicilian domestic architecture of the hellenistic and Roman periods, this paper questions the idea of a continuous development of the Greek house's central space, from the simple court to the peristyle, as well as the opposition between “centripetal”and “axial” (i.e. the Greek peristyle house and the Roman atrium house). This rigid distinction doesn't take in account the existence of an hybrid form of the court that doesn't fit well in these comfortable cathegories: the “tetrastylon”. Genre-dependent effects of 3D film on presence, motion sickness, and protagonist perception

Do the increasingly popular 3D movies change how we perceive the content of the movie? We presented short (3.21 min) film sequences to observers equipped with shutter glasses. Three genres (horror, action, and documentary) were crossed with three between-subjects viewing conditions (director’s 3D, artificial 3D, and 2D). Observers had to rate how the film impressed them in terms of arousal, motion sickness, presence, and immersion. They also judged the personality, attractiveness, and intelligence of the protagonist in all viewing conditions. Not surprisingly, horror films produced more arousal and presence than action films.
