This paper analyses the effect of regional financial development and bank competition on firms' growth using the Spanish provinces as a testing ground. The results show that firms in industries with a greater dependence on external finance grow faster in more financially developed provinces. The results also show that bank monopoly power has an inverted-‘U’ effect on firms' growth, suggesting that market power has its highest effect at intermediate values. BUSINESS CYCLE SYNCHRONIZATION BETWEEN ROMANIA AND THE EURO AREA. A FRESH LOOK IN VIEW OF THE RECENT CRISIS

This paper examines the degree of business cycles synchronization between Romania and the Euro area, by using Germany as a benchmark for the area economic cycle. The period of the study is 2000 - 2011, with a special emphasis on the recent economic and financial crisis. Using the Hodrick-Prescott filter, we find important, but decreasing correlations in times of crisis in the level of GDP. Furthermore, the analysis by GDP components reveals that private consumption remains the least correlated with the Euro area, while foreign trade is highly correlated and its synchronization even increased during the recent crisis.

Solid‐state NMR Spectroscopy of Iodine(I) Complexes

Solid-state NMR has been applied to a series of Barluenga-type iodine(I) [L-I-L]PF6 (L=pyridine, 4-ethylpyridine, 4-dimethylaminopyridine, isoquinoline) complexes as their hexafluorophosphate salts, as well as their respective non-liquid ligands (L), their precursor silver(I) complexes, and the respective N-methylated pyridinium and quinolinium hexafluorophoshate salts. These results are compared and contrasted to the corresponding solution studies and single-crystal X-ray structures. As the first study of its kind on the solid-state NMR behavior of halogen(I) complexes, practical considerations are also discussed to encourage wider utilization of this technique in the future. peerReviewed

It is now broadly recognised that in order to be sustainable, protected areas (PAs) must bring concrete benefits to local populations who suffer from the restrictions imposed for conservation. Natural disasters, such as major floods, bring additional challenges to conservation efforts and related support activities, notably nature-based tourism. Disasters often intensify conflicts between conservation objectives and local community needs, but they may also bring some mutual benefits. Tribological properties of thin films made by atomic layer deposition sliding against silicon

Interfacial phenomena, such as adhesion, friction, and wear, can dominate the performance and reliability of microelectromechanical (MEMS) devices. Here, thin films made by atomic layer deposition (ALD) were tested for their tribological properties. Tribological tests were carried out with silicon counterpart sliding against ALD thin films in order to simulate the contacts occurring in the MEMS devices. The counterpart was sliding in a linear reciprocating motion against the ALD films with the total sliding distances of 5 and 20 m. Sample allocation for efficient model-based small area estimation

We present research results on sample allocations for efficient model-based small area estimation in cases where the areas of interest coincide with the strata. Although model-assisted and model-based estimation methods are common in the production of small area statistics, utilization of the underlying model and estimation method are rarely included in the sample area allocation scheme.
