A note on zeroes of real polynomials in $C(K)$ spaces
2008
For real C(K) spaces, we show that being injected in a Hilbert space is a 3-space property. As a consequence, we obtain that, when K does not carry a strictly positive Radon measure, every quadratic continuous homogeneous real-valued polynomial on C(K) admits a linear zero subspace enjoying a property which implies non-separability.
The length of $C^\ast $-algebras of $\mathrm {b}$-pseudodifferential operators

Qualitative analysis of team interaction in games by means of the load-performance-metamodel PerPot.
2006
Observation of team behaviour in games shows rather inhomogeneous distributions of the levels of activity and effectiveness along the game. It is to expect, of course, that even for a high level team a phase of great effort is followed by a phase of reduced activities, while the opponent team is increasing its pressure. The result could be thought to be something like a rhythmic change, where the maximum activities of the one team correspond to the minimum ones of the other team. However, as we got from handball data that Martin Lames from the University of Ulm/Germany recorded last year (private correspondence), the correspondences can be much more difficult and varying: Lames measured the …
Conceptual knowledge‐based strategy training in single‐digit calculation: a single case intervention study in a child with specific language impairme…
2009
The aim of this single‐case intervention study was to examine whether a conceptual knowledge‐based strategy training would improve the accuracy of single‐digit arithmetical calculation in a child with specific language impairment. The intervention concerned an11‐year‐old Finnish‐speaking child with specific language impairment. He was trained individually once a week for three months. On the basis of his baseline performance single‐digit arithmetical problems were divided into ‘well‐known arithmetical problems’ and ‘error‐prone arithmetical problems’. Error‐prone problems were taught in meaningful relation to well‐known problems, which he repeatedly solved correctly by using arithmetical fa…
The Calculator Debate
2016
The ‘calculator debate’ refers to an (often heated) exchange of ideas, on the ‘proper’ use of specific forms of hand-held technology in mathematics instruction and the assessment of learning, that has been ongoing for decades. This chapter considers issues in this debate in three sections. The first section positions ‘the calculator’ within ‘portable hand-held computational technology’ and reviews calculator use, the research literature on the use of the calculator and the ‘calculator debate’ itself. The second section considers the calculator with regard to Wertsch’s (Mind as action, Oxford, England, 1998) ten properties of mediated action. The last section speculates on a possible future …
Dynamics of Lending Rates in the Baltic Countries: Influence of Funding Costs of Banks and Risk Factors
2017
In the Baltic countries, lending rates have been among the highest in the euro area mainly reflecting national differences in the market structure as well as relatively strict credit standards applied by banks in response to the changes in their perception of risk. In this context, the deeper econometric analysis could provide additional information about the common and diverging aspects of the dynamics of lending rates in the Baltic countries. Therefore, the aim of the paper to explore the pass-through of funding costs of banks to lending rates in different lending segments in the Baltic countries during the period of 2005–2015 taking in account risk considerations. To reach the set aim, a…
Road design problems solved by affine arithmetic
2015
In this paper we propose the use of techniques based on range numbers for solving problems of road designing. We applied the Affine Arithmetic to verify the driver's visibility in a horizontal curve, providing very interesting results and confirming its usefulness even in the most complex analytical expressions. The preparation of charts such as those proposed in this paper also makes this method directly accessible to those not so familiar with this technique.
Comparative Analysis of Natural Gas Pipeline Interconnections
2021
The paper shows a comparison between two intervention methods for interconnecting two gas transmission pipelines within a natural gas transmission system. One intervention implies shutdown of pipelines, while the other one in-service pipelines. Each method is described in detail along with the main technological issues, as well as the related advantages and disadvantages. The technological procedures imply special working techniques such as welding or hot tapping in service pipelines.
On finite products of soluble groups
1998
Let the finite groupG =AB be the product of two soluble subgroupsA andB, and letπ be a set of primes. We investigate under which conditions for the maximal normalπ-subgroups ofA, B andG the following holds:Oπ(G) ∩Oπ(G) ⊆Oπ(G).
Binary Patterns in Infinite Binary Words
2002
In this paper we study the set P(w) of binary patterns that can occur in one infinite binary word w, comparing it with the set F(w) of factors of the word. Since the set P(w) can be considered as an extension of the set F(w), we first investigate how large is such extension, by introducing the parameter ?(w) that corresponds to the cardinality of the difference set P(w) \ F(w). Some non trivial results about such parameter are obtained in the case of the Thue-Morse and the Fibonacci words. Since, in most cases, the parameter ?(w) is infinite, we introduce the pattern complexity of w, which corresponds to the complexity of the language P(w). As a main result, we prove that there exist infini…
