Responsive home numeracy as children progress from kindergarten through Grade 1

2020

The aim of the present study was to investigate longitudinal associations between formal home numeracy activities and children’s arithmetic fluency skills. Children were followed during the transition from the end of kindergarten (T1; Mage = 6.87 years) to the beginning of Grade 1 (T2), and again at the end of the Grade 1 (T3). Participants were Lithuanian children (n = 341) and their parents. At each time point, parents reported the frequency of the formal home numeracy activities they engaged in with their children; the children completed addition and subtraction tasks at the same three time points. Using a cross-lagged analysis, we found that parents adjusted the frequency of their home …

Soft Computing Methods for Personnel Selection Based on the Valuation of Competences

2014

Personnel selection based on candidates' competences is a difficult task due to the imprecise description of the applicants' competences and to the existence of several experts simultaneously evaluating those attributes. In this context, fuzzy sets theory provides suitable tools for the attainment of the maximum possible information from imprecise data. In this work, personnel selection methods are proposed that rely on the definition of an ideal candidate. Aggregated fuzzy valuations of each candidate are obtained taking into account the individual valuations provided by the experts. Then, candidates are ranked based on their similarity with the ideal candidate. Three different scenarios a…

Implementation of JPEG2000 arithmetic decoder using dynamic reconfiguration of FPGA

2005

This paper describes implementation of a part of JPEG2000 algorithm (MQ-Decoder and arithmetic decoder) on a FPGA board using dynamic reconfiguration. Comparison between static and dynamic reconfiguration is presented and new analysis criteria (time performance, logic cost, spatio-temporal efficiency) are defined. MQ-decoder and arithmetic decoder can be classified in the most attractive case for dynamic reconfiguration implementation: applications without parallelism by functions. This implementation is done on an architecture designed to study dynamic reconfiguration of FPGAs: the ARDOISE architecture. The implementation obtained, based on four partial configurations of arithmetic decoder…

Suffix array and Lyndon factorization of a text

2014

Abstract The main goal of this paper is to highlight the relationship between the suffix array of a text and its Lyndon factorization. It is proved in [15] that one can obtain the Lyndon factorization of a text from its suffix array. Conversely, here we show a new method for constructing the suffix array of a text that takes advantage of its Lyndon factorization. The surprising consequence of our results is that, in order to construct the suffix array, the local suffixes inside each Lyndon factor can be separately processed, allowing different implementative scenarios, such as online, external and internal memory, or parallel implementations. Based on our results, the algorithm that we prop…

Reducing complexity in H.264/AVC motion estimation by using a GPU

2011

H.264/AVC applies a complex mode decision technique that has high computational complexity in order to reduce the temporal redundancies of video sequences. Several algorithms have been proposed in the literature in recent years with the aim of accelerating this part of the encoding process. Recently, with the emergence of many-core processors or accelerators, a new approach can be adopted for reducing the complexity of the H.264/AVC encoding algorithm. This paper focuses on reducing the inter prediction complexity adopted in H.264/AVC and proposes a GPU-based implementation using CUDA. Experimental results show that the proposed approach reduces the complexity by as much as 99% (100x of spe…

Different Pitch Configurations Constrain the Playing Tactics and the Creation of Goal Scoring Opportunities during Small Sided Games in Youth Soccer …

2021

The aim of this study was to explore the tactical effects of different pitch configurations on the collective playing tactics and the creation of goal scoring opportunities (GSO) during small sided soccer games (SSG) in youth players. A total of 22 players performed a 7 vs. 7 + 1 floater (including goalkeepers) under three different pitch configurations (“Standard”, 53 × 38 m

Step-by-Step Control of the Dynamics of a Superconducting QED-like System

2007

We discuss the modus operandi of a theoretical scalable coupling scheme to control step by step the time evolution of a pair of flux qubits embedded in a lossy resonant cavity. The sequential interaction of each qubit with the quantized cavity mode is controlled by externally applied magnetic fluxes. Our analysis indicates that indirect qubit-qubit interactions, with the electromagnetic mode acting as a data bus, can be selectively performed and exploited both for the implementation of entangling gates and for the generation of states with a priori known characteristics.

Weighting Elementary Prices in Consumer Price Index Construction Using Spatial Autocorrelation

2013

The Consumer Price Indexes (CPI) are used in current economic systems to measure inflation. When constructing CPIs, however, official institutions have systematically overlooked the spatial dimension of elementary prices. Ignoring the fact that prices are collected at geographical locations implicitly implies considering prices as spatially independent, when in fact they are not. To solve this problem, this article proposes to weight basic price data by taking into account the spatial correlation they display. The weighted geometric and arithmetic means suggested generalize and improve the simple geometric and arithmetic means currently in use.
