Estimating the size of the loan sharking market in Italy
2014
In the current economic crisis, the risk is so high that entrepreneurs, commercial activities and even families may turn to the illegal market to obtain liquidity. This article proposes an estimate of the size of the usury credit market in Italy. The estimate is based on the assumption, provided by Guiso1, that before coming to a moneylender the borrower seeks to obtain credit through official channels. The results of our estimates confirm the seriousness of the problem, but provide much lower data than those reported periodically by the media. It is estimated that 372,000 economic activities may have been potentially involved in the usury market in 2012. The volume of loans disbursed in th…
Age at menopause predicts age at onset of Parkinson's disease.
2006
We investigated the association between age at onset of Parkinson's disease (PD) and fertile life characteristics in 145 women. Linear regression analyses showed a significant correlation between age at PD onset and age at menopause (P = 0.003), between age at PD onset and fertile life duration (P = 0.008), and a nonsignificant correlation between PD onset and cumulative duration of pregnancies (P = 0.23). These results support the possible role of estrogens in PD.
Cultural and communicational traits of oral health care: results of a Finnish case study.
2006
This paper aims to describe the cultural and communicational traits of Finnish oral health care. First, employees' views and experiences regarding their organization and their position within it are investigated and, second, relations between different individual and organizational factors are analyzed. Finally, a conceptual framework of organizational coherence is constructed. The paper shows that data collection (n = 58, 84 percent response rate) was carried out in 2002 at a Finnish dental clinic by using a semi-structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed statistically by using, among other things, non-parametric tests and a structural equation model (LISREL) and qualitatively by usin…
Effects of Dual-Task Group Training on Gait, Cognitive Executive Function, and Quality of Life in People With Parkinson Disease: Results of Randomize…
2020
The aims of this study were to analyze the effects of a dual-task group program, to compare it with the effects of a single-task group program, and to analyze the effects of functional secondary tasks.Single-blind randomized controlled trial.University laboratory and a rehabilitation gym at a health center.Patients (N=40) with a diagnosis of Parkinson disease (mean age, 66.72y; age range, 44-79y) with Hoehn and Yahr stage I to III who were on medication were randomized to either a group with dual-task training or a group with single-task training (only gait). Both interventions involved 20 sessions lasting 1 hour each and conducted twice a week. Dual-task training included walking exercises …
[Appropriate cytotoxic drug usages in solid tumors: conformity to official labelling and level of scientific evidence]
2006
International audience; The definition of appropriate use of drugs is questioned in oncology. Daily therapeutic practices were compared to official labelling and to published scientific data in this retrospective study. It was carried out in two respective specialised centers, from January to September 2004. All chemotherapies administered for adult solid tumours and including one of the eleven studied drugs were evaluated. The analysis of use was performed by drug : conformity to the validated labelling and level of scientific evidence (at the period study). The study included 1,561 drug uses in 1,211 patients. The overall rate of conformity to official labelling was 81.7 % (67.1 % of stri…
Executive functioning and serum lipid fractions in Parkinson’s disease—a possible sex-effect: the PACOS study
2022
AbstractThe association between dyslipidemia and cognitive performance in Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients still needs to be clarified. Aim of the study was to evaluate the presence of possible associations between serum lipids fractions and executive dysfunction also exploring the sex-specific contribute of lipids level on cognition. Patients from the PACOS cohort, who underwent a complete serum lipid profile measures (total cholesterol-TC, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol-LDL, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol-HDL and triglycerides-TG) were selected. Adult Treatment Panel III guidelines of the National Cholesterol Education Program were used to classify normal/abnormal lipid fracti…
The assessment of functional ability in patients with Parkinson's disease: the PLM-test and three clinical tests.
1997
This study assesses functional ability of Parkinson's disease (PD) patients by means of an objective movement analysis (the PLM-test) and three clinical tests. The correlation between the tests was also studied. The main object of this study was to detect and measure relevant disabilities in Parkinson's disease to obtain a clinical test battery.
pBrain: A novel pipeline for Parkinson related brain structure segmentation
2020
[EN] Parkinson is a very prevalent neurodegenerative disease impacting the life of millions of people worldwide. Although its cause remains unknown, its functional and structural analysis is fundamental to advance in the search of a cure or symptomatic treatment. The automatic segmentation of deep brain structures related to Parkinson's disease could be beneficial for the follow up and treatment planning. Unfortunately, there is not broadly available segmentation software to automatically measure Parkinson related structures. In this paper, we present a novel pipeline to segment three deep brain structures related to Parkinson's disease (substantia nigra, subthalamic nucleus and red nucleus…
Reliability of Magnetoencephalography and High-Density Electroencephalography Resting-State Functional Connectivity Metrics
2019
Resting-state connectivity, for example, based on magnetoencephalography (MEG) or electroencephalography (EEG), is a widely used method for characterizing brain networks and a promising imaging biomarker. However, there is no established standard as to which method, modality, and analysis variant is preferable and there is only limited knowledge on the reproducibility, an important prerequisite for clinical application. We conducted an MEG-/ high-density (hd)-EEG-study on 22 young healthy adults, who were measured twice in a scan/rescan design after 7 – 2 days. Reliability of resting-state (15 min, eyes-closed) connectivity in source space was calculated via intraclass correlation coefficie…
A new method to calculate external mechanical work using force-platform data in ecological situations in humans: Application to Parkinson's disease
2016
Abstract Background and aim To accurately quantify the cost of physical activity and to evaluate the different components of energy expenditure in humans, it is necessary to evaluate external mechanical work ( W EXT ). Large platform systems surpass other currently used techniques. Here, we describe a calculation method for force-platforms to calculate long-term W EXT . Methods Each force-platform (2.46 × 1.60 m and 3.80 × 2.48 m) rests on 4 piezoelectric sensors. During long periods of recording, a drift in the speed of displacement of the center of mass (necessary to calculate W EXT ) is generated. To suppress this drift, wavelet decomposition is used to low-pass filter the source signal.…
