W pierwszych dwóch dekadach XVIII w. dokonał się proces modernizacji wojskowości polsko-litewskiej. Przede wszystkim unowocześniono wyposażenie oddziałów dragonii i piechoty wprowadzając do uzbrojenia karabiny skałkowe (flint lock), wzorowane na armii saskiej pałasze i szpady, jednolite sorty mundurów, a także sprzęt „obozowy”. Ustanowiono także nowe schematy organizacyjne regimentów piechoty. Działania modernizacyjne zakończono wkrótce po 1717 r., choć nie wprowadzono wszystkich koniecznych i częściowo zapowiedzianych w uchwałach sejmu niemego zmian. The article, which refers to the research on the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth’s military history in the 18th century and the crisis of Old Polish war art, presents the genesis, course and effects of the battle of Kowalewo of 5 October 1716. Epistolographic material, press and chronicle accounts along with plans of two battles constitute the source base. These primary sources were given a critical analysis, the acquired information being collated and verified in order to obtain a reasonably precise picture of the causes, course and consequences of the battle. During 2020, the Mediterranean Sea was again the testing ground for migration flows from North Africa and the Middle East to Italy, Greece and Spain. 2020 was also a complex year due to the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. Movements between countries were affected by the spread of the virus that spared no one and imposed the need to reflect on 'global health' and the consequences that this has, also in the relationship between countries and in travel.

W niniejszym artykule zostaje wprowadzone do obiegu naukowego nowe źródło do badań nad historią armii litewskiej w okresie wielkiej wojny północnej (1700–1721), którym jest projekt komputu z 1703 r. Znajduje się on w Bibliotece Kórnickiej Polskiej Akademii Nauk w rękopisie o sygnaturze 985. W inwentarzu rękopisów biblioteki widnieje natomiast jako komput z 1706 r. Trudno jednak ustalić faktyczną datę jego powstania. Możliwe jest jedynie oszacowanie pewnych cezur. Sporządzony został na pewno przed 27 listopada 1703 r. The article discusses, on the basis both of the literaturę on the subject and archival materials preserved in two Russian archives, the fate of military units from the Crown and Lithuanian Army of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, which in the spring-summer of 1793 were taken to the Russian service. Initially, they had ca. 24 thousand soldiers, but the Russian decided to disband some of the units, while reducing the number of others, thus the number of the servicemen decreased to 15 thousand. The least reduced was the garrison of Kamianets-Podilskyi, for in the service of Empress Catherine II stayed two almost non-reduced infantry regiments of the former Polish Army and part of artillery …

The article discusses part of the archival legacy of Ludwig Gruno prince of Hesse-Homburg. Born in 1705, he was one of the youngest sons of Frederick III James, Landgrave of Hesse-Homburg, and spent all his adult life in Russia. He got involved in the military career, achieving the highest military degree of field marshal, and in 1735, he became general feldcejchmajster and head of the Main Chancery of the Artillery, thus becoming the commander of the whole Russian artillery. Izaak Komnen (1007–1060) był pierwszym przedstawicielem swojej rodziny, który zasiadł na tronie cesarskim w Konstantynopolu. Ten wychowany przez cesarza Bazylego II (976–1025) człowiek podczas niezwykle krótkiego panowania próbował naprawić błędy swoich poprzedników, którzy pod koniec dynastii macedońskiej osłabili kraj Rzymian pod względem militarnym.
