Enfermedad del hígado graso no alcohólico, asociación con la enfermedad cardiovascular y tratamiento ( I ). Enfermedad del hígado graso no alcohólico…
2017
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) comprises a series of histologically lesions similar to those induced by alcohol consumption in people with very little or no liver damage. The importance of NAFLD is its high prevalence in the Western world and, from the point of view of the liver, in its gradual progression from steatosis to steatohepatitis, cirrhosis, and liver cancer. During the last decade it has been observed that NAFLD leads to an increased cardiovascular risk with acceleration of arteriosclerosis and events related to it, being the main cause of its morbidity and mortality. This review, updated to January 2016, consists of two parts, with the first part analysing the associa…
Ticlopidine in the Treatment of Multiple Atherosclerotic Arteriopathy: a Strain Gauge Plethysmography and Döppler Spectrum Analysis Evaluation
1987
The effect of ticlopidine was compared with flunarizine in patients with iliac–femoral and / or femoral–popliteal arteriosclerotic arteriopathy accompanied by lesions of the cervical arteries of no haemodynamic significance. In the lower limbs, plethysmography (strain gauge measurements) and Döppler ultrasonography integrated by spectral analysis of the cervical arteries showed qualitative and quantitative improvements of the regional haematic flow. Side-effects were negligible which suggests that ticlopidine is useful in the treatment of multiple arteriosclerotic arteriopathy.
AORTIC STIFFNESS IS INCREASED IN NORMOTENSIVE PATIENTS WITH SYSTEMIC LUPUS ERYTHEMATOSUS
2018
INTRODUCTION: Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) have a 4- to 10-fold increased risk of developing cardiovascular (CV) events compared with the general population. The enhanced CV risk conferred by SLE may in part be mediated through preclinical CV damage. Large artery stiffness is usually assessed by measuring aortic pulse wave velocity (aPWV), a marker of early vascular aging (EVA) and an independent predictor of adverse CV prognosis. Several studies examined aortic stiffness in SLE with inconsistent results. AIM: To evaluate aPWV and the prevalence of EVA in a group of normotensive patients with SLE and to compare these values with those obtained in age- and gender- matched…
Kinin receptors in human vascular tissue: their role in atheromatous disease
1997
Using samples of many human blood vessels, obtained at autopsy and specific antibodies directed to peptide sequences of the kinin B1 and B2 receptors, we demonstrate the localisation of these receptors within the human vascular system using standard immunolabelling techniques. In large elastic arteries and veins, kinin receptors are present only in the endothelial cells whereas in all muscular arteries and arterioles, these receptors are present in both the endothelial and smooth muscle cells. The identification of kinin receptors in human blood vessels confirms that kinins may modulate both vascular permeability and contractility. The incidental finding at histology, of patchy atheromatous…
Serum sphingomyelin levels are related to the clearance of postprandial remnant-like particles.
2005
It is known that sphingomyelin (SM) content is higher in apolipoprotein B-containing particles (BLps) than in high density lipoproteins and that BLp levels, including chylomicrons and their remnant particles, are positively related to atherosclerosis. To evaluate the relationship between serum SM and postprandial remnant particle levels, we determined SM, triglyceride (TG), and cholesterol levels in serum and in remnant-like particles (RLPs) before and 3, 5, 7, and 10 h after a high-fat meal in 31 healthy subjects. We found that serum SM, like serum TG, was increased to its maximum 3 h after fat loading and then gradually decreased to basal levels after 10 h. More important, we determined t…
Vascular atherosclerotic disease: evaluation of the whole-blood filterability and red cell membrane microrheological pattern after intravenous admini…
1990
SummaryA study was carried out in 10 patients with vascular atherosclerotic disease to investigate the effects of a single dose of 300 mg pentoxifylline, given by intravenous infusion over 30 minutes, on various macrorheological and nzicrorheological parameters. Measurements were made at baseline, at the end of the intravenous infusion and again 30 minutes later of whole-blood filterability, erythrocyte membrane fluidity (using pyrene as probe) and transverse fluidity gradient (using fluorescent fatty acids as probes). The results showed that there was a significant variation in whole-blood filterability and the red cell membrane fluidity gradient after pentoxifylline. No difference, howeve…
Calcification of the intracranial carotid artery and its relation to the clinical and angiographic picture: an angiographic classification of asterio…
1968
Fifty six patients with arteriosclerosis cerebri confirmed by X-rays examinations were clinically and angiographically studied. Calcifications of the carotid artery were found predominantly in human beings between the ages of 55 and 65 and more often among men than among women, the proportion being 2.5 to 1. Nearly all arteriosclerotic patients with calcium deposits in the carotid artery showed several neurological and mental deficits, the most frequent initial symptoms being motor disturbances. Angiographic anormalities found in these patients can be classed into 3 groups: (a) grade I— wavy course of the cerebral vessels, small number of peripheral brain vessels, formation of small knots, …
2214Prevalence and severity of coronary disease in patients with familial hypercholesterolemia hospitalized for an acute myocardial infarction: data …
2019
Abstract Aim Individuals with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) are at high risk of early myocardial infarction (MI). However, coronary artery disease (CAD) burden of FH remains not well described. From a large database of a regional registry of acute MI, we aimed to address prevalence of FH and severity of CAD. Methods Consecutive patients hospitalized with MI in a multicentre database from 2001–2017 were considered. An algorithm, adapted from Dutch Lipid Clinic Network criteria, was built upon 4 variables (LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) and lipid lowering agents, premature and family history of CAD) to identify FH probabilities. Results Among the 11624 patients included in the surv…
Importancia de la dislipidemia en la enfermedad cardiovascular: un punto de vista
2015
The authors present their view on the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, accepting the European ESC/EAS guidelines. They consider that the aim of the lipid control, based on LDL-C goals, is essential for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. In subjects with metabolic syndrome (mainly, abdominal obesity, pre-diabetes and diabetes), the primary objective should be apoB or Non-HDL-C, which are better associated with cardiovascular risk. The treatment must be lifestyle changes and control of other risk factors. After calculating cardiovascular risk, statins are the first therapeutic step, with the strength and dose needed to achieve LDL-C goals. If targets are not achiev…
Indications of PCSK9 inhibitors in clinical practice. Recommendations of the Spanish Society of Arteriosclerosis (SEA), 2019
2019
A group of experts convened by the Spanish Society of Arteriosclerosis (SEA) has been in charge of updating the SEA document on the indications of PCSK9 inhibitors (PCSK9i) in clinical practice that was published in 2016. This update is justified by the fact that the data from clinical trials carried out on a large scale with PCSK9i have shown that in addition to their high potency to lower atherogenic cholesterol, they reduce the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, both in patients with stable disease, and with recent disease, and with a high degree of security. This update provides the recommendations and level of evidence for the prescription of iPCSK9 in patients with homozy…
