Aceclofenac versus piroxicam in the management of osteoarthritis of the knee: A double-blind controlled study

1994

Abstract The objective of this study was to compare the efficacy and tolerability of aceclofenac tablets 100 mg twice daily with piroxicam tablets 20 mg once daily in the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee or gonarthritis. A randomized, double-blind, controlled study of 3 months' duration was conducted in patients with gonarthritis diagnosed according to the World Health Organization criteria. A total of 212 patients were recruited; 205 patients fully complied with the inclusion-exclusion criteria. Of these, 103 received aceclofenac and 102 received piroxicam. Fourteen patients in the aceclofenac group and 12 patients in the piroxicam group who failed to complete the 3-month treatment …

Hsp60 and human aging: Les liaisons dangereuses

2013

Stressors can cause abnormal intracellular accumulation of Hsp60 and its localization in extramitochondrial sites, secretion, and circulation, with immune system activation. Dysfunction of chaperones associated with their quantitative and qualitative decline with aging (chaperonopathies of aging) characterizes senescence and is a potential causal factor in the physiological deterioration that occurs with it. The role of Hsp60 in aging is not easy to elucidate, because aging is accompanied by pathologies (e.g., cardiovascular and neurodegenerative disorders, osteoporosis, diabetes, cancer, etc.) in which Hsp60 has been implicated but, although those disorders are more frequent in the elderly…

Diagnosis and treatment of chronic synovitis in patients with haemophilia: consensus statements from the Italian Association of Haemophilia Centres

2022

Although synovitis is recognized as a marker of joint disease activity, its periodic assessment is not included in routine clinical surveillance of patients with haemophilia (PwH). In order to evaluate the current knowledge and to identify controversial issues, a preliminary literature search by the Musculoskeletal Committee of the Italian Association of Haemophilia Centres (AICE) has been conducted. Statements have been established and sent to the Italian AICE members to collect their level of agreement or disagreement by a Delphi process. Thirty-seven consensus recommendations have been drafted. We found a general agreement on the indication to consider the presence of synovitis as a mark…

Changes in Muscle Activity Patterns and Joint Kinematics During Gait in Hemophilic Arthropathy

2020

Hemophilic arthropathy is the result of repetitive intra-articular bleeding and synovial inflammation. In people with hemophilic arthropathy (PWHA), very little is known about the neural control of individual muscles during movement. The aim of the present study was to assess if the neural control of individual muscles and coordination between antagonistic muscle pairs and joint kinematics during gait are affected in PWHA. Thirteen control subjects (CG) walked overground at their preferred and slow velocity (1 m/s), and 14 PWHA walked overground at the preferred velocity (1 m/s). Joint kinematics and temporal gait parameters were assessed using four inertial sensors. Surface electromyograph…

The orthopaedic status of severe haemophiliacs in Spain

2000

Summary. This paper provides an outline of the results obtained in a cross-sectional study conducted primarily with the aim of ascertaining orthopaedic complications in a group of young severe A and B haemophiliacs, the effects which these complications have on the medical resources used with these patients, and the impact of severe haemophilia on their quality of life. Its secondary aim was to link their current orthopaedic status to the type of treatment they had received prior to the study. Eleven Spanish hospitals took part in this study, monitoring 70 severe haemophiliacs (FVIII:C 6 months). In 40 cases (57.1%) the patients underwent one or more periods of prophylaxis. Thirty-three pat…

Joint protection in haemophilia

2011

Haemarthroses (intra-articular haemorrhages) are a frequent finding typically observed in patients with haemophilia. Diagnosis and treatment of these bleeding episodes must be delivered as early as possible. Additionally, treatment should ideally be administered intensively (enhanced on-demand treatment) until the resolution of symptoms. Joint aspiration plays an important role in acute and profuse haemarthroses as the presence of blood in the joint leads to chondrocyte apoptosis and chronic synovitis, which will eventually result in joint degeneration (haemophilic arthropathy). Ultrasonography (US) is an appropriate diagnostic technique to assess the evolution of acute haemarthrosis in hae…

BENEFICIAL EFFECT OF PROBIOTICS ADMINISTRATION IN INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE AND RELATED SPONDYLOARTHROPATHY: A PROSPECTIVE STUDY

2015

Background: Therapeutic treatment for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) may follow different approaches, systemic as well as local, especially when the target is the osteoarticular apparatus. Although some clinical trials have suggested benefits from probiotics administration in IBD, there is still a great deal of controversy on their use. The aim of this study was to further investigate the effects of probiotics in patients with IBD and related spondyloarthropathy. Material/Methods: Fifty-nine patients affected by IBD with extra-intestinal involvement where evaluated from 2006 to 2010. Twenty-eight patients received administration of a standard therapy with mesalazine and 31 where treated w…

Musculoskeletal manifestations of childhood cancer and differential diagnosis with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (ONCOREUM): a multicentre, cross-sec…

2021

Summary Background Presenting symptoms of childhood cancers might mimic those of rheumatic diseases. However, the evidence available to guide differential diagnosis remains scarce. Preventing wrong or delayed diagnosis is therefore important to avoid incorrect administration of glucocorticoid or immunosuppressive therapy and worsening of prognosis. As such, we aimed to assess the prevalence and characteristics of presenting musculoskeletal manifestations in patients at cancer onset and to identify the factors that differentiate childhood malignancies with arthropathy from juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Methods We did a multicentre, cross-sectional study at 25 paediatric haemato-oncology cen…
