2016

The aim of this article is to highlight some rhythmical specificities in political speech. In order to do so, articulation and speech rates, pauses and between-pauses within syllable groups were measured in several talks given by François Hollande. Results show variation for all the above mentioned parameters depending on the topic of the speech. Furthermore, rhythmical differences were observed between speeches and debates.

The Contribution of RAN Pause Time and Articulation Time to Reading Across Languages: Evidence From a More Representative Sample of Children

2014

We examined the relationship between rapid automatized naming (RAN) components – articulation time and pause time – and reading fluency across languages varying in orthographic consistency. Three hundred forty-seven Grade 4 children (82 Chinesespeaking Taiwanese children, 90 English-speaking Canadian children, 90 Greek-speaking Cypriot children, and 85 Finnish-speaking children) were assessed on RAN (Colors and Digits) and reading fluency (word reading efficiency and text reading speed). The results showed that articulation time accounted for more unique variance in reading in the alphabetic orthographies than in Chinese, and pause time for more unique variance in reading in Chinese than in…

How long is the sign?

2015

AbstractThis paper deals with the relative empirical length of signs in sign languages and provides evidence for the view that they are actually longer units than has hitherto been recognized. The evidence is presented from two perspectives: those of sign articulation and sign recognition. Concerning sign articulation, it is suggested that signs are longer units than is currently assumed because most of the structural features of signs are in fact already present before the currently accepted beginnings of signs and they continue after signs' generally accepted endings. Concerning sign recognition, the longer view of the sign is proposed on the grounds that the recognition point of signs is…

The foot fillet flap for ischial pressure sore reconstruction: A new indication

2018

Abstract Introduction The main cause of ischial pressure sores in paraplegic patients is prolonged sitting without pressure relief. These wounds are subject to recurrence and may need repeated reconstruction with local flaps. When all options are exhausted, the total thigh flap is the last resort. Disarticulation of the hip joint impairs stability even when sitting and causes subsequently very high discomfort. In this manuscript, we describe an alternative to the total thigh flap to avoid hip disarticulation: the foot fillet flap. Materials & Methods This study was performed on four patients at the department of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery of the Ghent University Hospital, Belgium. Inc…

Modeling Listeners’ Emotional Response to Music

2012

An overview of the computational prediction of emotional responses to music is presented. Communication of emotions by music has received a great deal of attention during the last years and a large number of empirical studies have described the role of individual features (tempo, mode, articulation, timbre) in predicting the emotions suggested or invoked by the music. However, unlike the present work, relatively few studies have attempted to model continua of expressed emotions using a variety of musical features from audio-based representations in a correlation design. The construction of the computational model is divided into four separate phases, with a different focus for evaluation. T…

VOX Spain: The Organisational Challenges of a New Radical Right Party

2021

This article examines the organisation of VOX, a new radical right party in Spain. It shows that the party has taken early and uneven steps to build a mass organisation and initially opted for open membership recruitment with participatory organisational elements. Also, the party’s rapid growth and quick entrance into political institutions at different state levels led the party leadership to establish more centralised control and limit members’ prerogatives, though recruitment continued. Centralisation in part responds to organisational needs given the party’s quickly acquired political relevance, but also to the desire of the central party leadership to forestall the articulation of terr…
