Background: Oxidative stress has been linked to such degenerative diseases as atherosclerosis, and it has been suggested that increased dietary intake of antioxidants may reduce its progression. Objective: To determine the effect of mandarin juice consumption on biomarkers related to oxidative stress in hypercholesterolemic children. Purpose To study the association of selected polymorphism in genes related to vitamin E, vitamin C, and glutathione peroxidase with these biomarkers and primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) risk. Methods A case-control study matched for age, sex, and bodyweight was undertaken. Two hundred fifty POAG cases and 250 controls were recruited from a Mediterranean population. Effect of acidosis and anoxia on iron delocalization from brain homogenates.

Abstract Cortical homogenates were prepared from rat brain in Krebs-Ringer phosphate media adjusted to pH 7, 6 or 5 and incubated for 1 hr under aerotic or anaerobic conditions in the presence of dipyridyl, an iron chelator. Low molecular weight species (LMWS) iron was measured spectrophotometrically after passing of the homogenates through a 10,000- M , ultrafiltration membrane. Following aerobic incubation, LMWS iron reached 1.24 μg/g tissue at pH 7, and increased 1.7-fold at pH 6 and 3.1-fold at pH 5. Anoxia enhanced significantly the amount of ultrafiltrable iron at the three pH values, the LMWS iron level being increased by 190% at pH 7, by 113% at pH 6, and by 77% at pH 5. Addition of…

International audience; To evaluate the effects of alpha-lipoic acid (AL) in a model of doxorubicin (DOX)-induced cardiotoxicity, male Wistar rats were treated with DOX (1 mg/kg/d; 10 d) in combination or not with AL (50 mg/kg/d; 15 d). Plasma oxidative stress was determined by hydroperoxides (ROOH) and the ascorbyl radical/ascorbate ratio. One and two months later, the functional parameters of the hearts were determined in vivo by catheterization and cardiac oxidative stress was assessed by malonedialdehyde (MDA) and O₂*⁻ (dihydroethidium fluorescence) content in tissue. Abstract AZT (zidovudine) is a potent inhibitor of HIV replication and a major antiretroviral drug used for AIDS treatment. A major limitation in the use of AZT is the occurrence of severe side effects. The aim of this work was to test whether AZT causes oxidative damage to heart mitochondria and whether this can be prevented by supranutritional doses of antioxidant vitamins. This study aims to ascertain whether oral administration of pharmacological doses of Vitamins C and E has any detrimental effect on reproductive fitness of female mice. We fed hybrid female mice from the first day of weaning a standard diet supplemented or not supplemented with pharmacological doses of Vitamins C and E. Inhibition of the mechanical activity of mouse ileum by cactus pear (Opuntia Ficus Indica, L, Mill.) fruit extract and its pigment indicaxanthin.

We investigated, using an organ bath technique, the effects of a hydrophilic extract from Opuntia ficus indica fruit pulp (cactus fruit extract, CFE) on the motility of mouse ileum, and researched the extract component(s) responsible for the observed responses. CFE (10-320 mg of fresh fruit pulp equivalents/mL of organ bath) reduced dose-dependently the spontaneous contractions. This effect was unaffected by tetrodotoxin, a neuronal blocker, N(omega)-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester, a nitric oxide synthase blocker, tetraethylammonium, a potassium channel blocker, or atropine, a muscarinic receptor antagonist. In this trial we studied the influences of the ripening stage at harvest (mature-ripe or green-ripe) on quality of ready to eat mango fruits from nine cultivars (Carrie, Keitt, Glenn, Manzanillo, Maya, Rosa, Osteen, Tommy Atkins and Kensington Pride) grown in the Mediterranean subtropical climate through physicochemical, nutraceutical, and sensory analysis. Abstract It has been reported that ascorbic acid (AA) antagonizes the physiological and behavioral effects of dopamine (DA). AA reduces locomotor activity induced by dopaminergic agonist drugs. Also, AA amplifies the action of antidopaminergic drugs. Ethanol, like other drugs, produces a release of DA in the mesolimbic pathway, and at some doses, induces locomotor activity in mice. The ethanol-induced locomotor activity could be dopamine-dependent because it can be reduced by antidopaminergic drugs.
