Single Preoperative Oral Application of Ascorbic Acid Does Not Affect Postoperative Plasma Levels of Ascorbic Acid

2002

Background and Aims: A decrease in ascorbic acid (AA) plasma concentration is well known during the postoperative period and postulated to be caused by increased radical scavenging activity in response to surgical trauma. This often affects postoperative patients and is associated with multiple organ failure. Therefore, substitution of AA could potentially decrease the risk of postoperative complications. This study examines the effect of preoperative oral administration of 1,000 mg AA on the postoperative AA plasma concentration. Methods: 54 patients were randomly split into two groups; patients in group 1 received no AA preoperatively while group 2 re…

Efecto antioxidante e hipolipemiante del pimentón ahumado en individuos sanos Antioxidant and hypolipidaemic effect of smoked paprika in healthy subj…

2010

The healthy properties and antioxidant activity of smoked paprika in healthy male non-smoking students (age 20.6 ± 1.7 years), from Universidad de Extremadura (Spain), who consumed (2 g/day, 20 times, over 30 days) smoked (La Vera, Extremadura, Spain) or non-smoked (Novelda, Alicante, Spain) paprika were investigated. Anthropometric and cardiovascular measurements and blood and urine samples were taken from overnight fasted subjects for biochemical, hematological, and immunological measurements. The ingestion of smoked paprika increased the urinary excretion of 1-hydroxypyrene (from 38.6 ± 24.9 to 109.2 ± 85.6 nmol/mol; p < 0.05). Plasma triglyceride and total cholesterol levels were signif…

Impact of single-dose application of TGF-β, copper peptide, stanozolol and ascorbic acid in hydrogel on midline laparatomy wound healing in a diabeti…

2012

Despite numerous advances and improvements in surgical techniques the incidence of incisional hernias after laparotomy remains high. The aim of this study was to investigate possible effects of single application of ascorbic acid, stanozolol, a synthetic anabolic steroid, copper peptide and transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) on laparotomy wound healing in an incisional wound model in diabetic mice. After diabetes induction with streptozotozin in Balb-c mice, midline laparatomies were carried out. Closure of the linea alba was followed by single-dose application of the agents dissolved in a hydrogel before skin closure. The functional outcome was assessed in terms of maximum tensile streng…

Reproducibility and validity of a food frequency questionnaire among pregnant women in a Mediterranean area

2013

Background: Studies exploring the role of diet during pregnancy are still scarce, in part due to the complexity of measuring diet and to the lack of valid instruments. The aim of this study was to examine the reproducibility and validity (against biochemical biomarkers) of a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) in pregnant women. Methods: Participants were 740 pregnant women from a population-based birth cohort study in Valencia (INMA Study). We compared nutrient and food intakes from FFQs estimated for two periods of pregnancy (reproducibility), and compared energy-adjusted intake of several carotenoids, folate, vitamin B12, vitamin C and a-tocopherol of the FFQ in the firs…
