Fetuses from mothers with gestational diabetes are at increased risk of developing neonatal macrosomia and oxidative stress. We investigated the modulation of antioxidant status and circulating lipids in gestational diabetic mothers and their macrosomic babies and in healthy age-matched pregnant women and their newborns. Determination of ascorbic acid in plasma and urine by high performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection.

Abstract A reliable simple reversed-phase liquid chromatographic method for the routine determination of ascorbic acid in plasma and urine with ultraviolet detection is described. This method enables the complete separation of the ascorbic acid peak from others with a recovery of above 95 % within 8 minutes. The method can be used for analysing multiple samples within a day. In addition, the storage conditions and stability of ascorbic acid in plasma and urine were investigated. Spectrophotometric determination of vitamin C using the copper(II)-nioxime-ascorbic acid system following stabilization in a propylene glycol medium

Abstract A spectrophotometric method for the determination of Vitamin C is proposed. The procedure is based on formation and stabilization of the ternary complex Cu(II)-nioxime-ascorbic acid in 80% ( v v ) propylene glycol-water medium. The method has a high degree of tolerance for the determination of ascorbic acid in the presence of other active substances or excipients likely to be present along with vitamin C in pharmaceutical formulations. The suggested method has proved to be rapid and precise and has been successfully applied to different commercial pharmaceutical preparations of vitamin C. Precision, measured on the relative standard deviation, did not exceed 0.73%.

Ascorbic acid reduces noise-induced nitric oxide production in the guinea pig ear.

Objectives: Noise-induced hearing loss can be caused, among other causes, by increased nitric oxide (NO) production in the inner ear leading to nitroactive stress and cell destruction. Some studies in the literature suggest that the degree of hearing loss (HL) could be reduced in an animal model through ascorbic acid supplementation. Influence of storage and in vitro gastrointestinal digestion on totqal antioxidant capacity of fruit beverages

Eight fruit beverages containing grape, orange and apricot, with/without iron and/or zinc and with/without milk added were analyzed for total antioxidant capacity (ORAC and TEAC methods), ascorbic acid content, and total polyphenols. The influence of cold storage (2-4 degrees C) during the product shelf-life (135 days) and antioxidant capacity after an in vitro gastrointestinal digestion were evaluated. Antioxidant capacity for all beverages together increased significantly (p < 0.05) at the end of storage (16.4% and 12.8% for ORAC and TEAC, respectively), whereas ascorbic acid remained stable. Kinetics of green asparagus ascorbic acid heated in a high-temperature thermoresistometer

Thermal degradation of green asparagus ascorbic acid in high-temperature short-time conditions was studied by heating in a five-channel computer-controlled thermoresistometer. Ascorbic acid was heated to between 110  °C and 140  °C and the degradation kinetics were analyzed assuming that two different inactivation mechanisms were occurring, one aerobic and the other anaerobic. The two reactions followed first-order kinetics, with E a=12.3(2.0) kcal/mol and k 125  °C=47.0(3.0)×10–3 s–1 for the aerobic oxidation, and E a=6.1(1.4) kcal/mol and k 125  °C=4.1(0.2)×10–3 s–1 for the anaerobic degradation.

N-3 fatty acids modulate antioxidant status in diabetic rats and their macrosomic offspring.

We investigated the role of dietary n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) in the modulation of total antioxidant status in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats and their macrosomic offspring. Female wistar rats, fed on control diet or n-3 PUFA diet, were rendered diabetic by administration of five mild doses of STZ on day 5 and were killed on days 12 and 21 of gestation. Oxidative markers in children with severe obesity following low-calorie diets supplemented with mandarin juice

Aim:  To evaluate the effect of supplementing a hypocaloric diet with mandarin juice, a food with a high content of antioxidants (vitamin C, flavonoids and carotenoids), on biomarkers of oxidant/antioxidant status of severe obese children.
