Tolerance to nitroglycerin-induced preconditioning of the endothelium: a human in vivo study

Damage and dysfunction of the vascular endothelium critically influence clinical outcomes after ischemia and reperfusion (I/R). Brief exposure to organic nitrates can protect the vascular endothelium from I/R injury via a mechanism that is similar to ischemic preconditioning and is independent of hemodynamic changes. The clinical relevance of these protective effects clearly depends on whether they can be sustained over time. Vitamin C and E supplementation alters protein signalling after a strength training session, but not muscle growth during 10 weeks of training

This study investigated the effects of vitamin C and E supplementation on acute responses and adaptations to strength training. Thirty-two recreationally strength-trained men and women were randomly allocated to receive a vitamin C and E supplement (1000 mg day(-1) and 235 mg day(-1), respectively), or a placebo, for 10 weeks. Effect of nighttime aircraft noise exposure on endothelial function and stress hormone release in healthy adults.

Aims Aircraft noise disturbs sleep, and long-term exposure has been shown to be associated with increases in the prevalence of hypertension and an overall increased risk for myocardial infarction. The exact mechanisms responsible for these cardiovascular effects remain unclear. Methods and results We performed a blinded field study in 75 healthy volunteers (mean age 26 years), who were exposed at home, in random order, to one control pattern (no noise) and two different noise scenarios [30 or 60 aircraft noise events per night with an average maximum sound pressure level (SPL) of 60 dB(A)] for one night each. In recent years, there has been increasing public interest in plant antioxidants, thanks to the potential anticarcinogenic and cardioprotective actions mediated by their biochemical properties. The red (or blood) orange (Citrus sinensis(L.) Osbeck) is a pigmented sweet orange variety typical of eastern Sicily (southern Italy), California, and Spain. A Quantitative Estimate of Ascorbic and Isoascorbic Acid by High Performance Liquid Chromatography: Application to Citric Juices

Abstract The present report deals with the optimization and verification of a simple HPLC isocratic method useful for determining ascorbic and isoascorbic acids in standard solutions and fruit juices. Sample preparation is minimal and docs not require derivatization. The method uses an octadecyl reversed phase, a mobile phase which contains cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide 0.05M as the ionic pair and potassium dihydrogen phosphate as a buffer, at pH=4.5, and 4-hydro-xyacetanilide as internal standard. The proposed method makes it possible to quantify ascorbic and isoascorbic acid in less than 13 minutes, with precision (C. V. 3.5%) and accuracy (recover' of 98%).

Determination of titratable acidity and ascorbic acid in fruit juices in continuous-flow systems

Two continuous-flow systems for the determination of titratable acidity and ascrobic acid in fruit juice samples are described. The assemblies permit on-line dialysis of analytes prior to the reaction step, thus improving selectivity and performing sample dilution. Flow systems are built with a channel carrying the donor phase (sample in both determinations) and another channel carrying an acceptor phase, both of them entering the dialyser. Thiol antioxidants block the activation of antigen-presenting cells by contact sensitizers.

Strong contact sensitizers are able to induce signal transduction mechanisms such as tyrosine phosphorylation and activation of MAP kinases in antigen-presenting cells. We studied the capacity of different antioxidants (ascorbic acid, alpha-tocopherol, pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate, N-acetylcysteine, and glutathione) to block the increase in tyrosine phosphorylation in human monocytes seen after stimulation with strong contact sensitizers. The determination of antimony and arsenic concentrations in fly ash by hydride generation inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry

Abstract Hydride generation inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (HG-ICP-OES) was used in the determination of As and Sb concentrations in fly ash samples. The effect of sample pre-treatment reagents and measurement parameters used for hydride generation was evaluated. Due to memory effects observed, the appropriate read delay time was adjusted to 60 s resulting in RSDs 0.6% and 2.3% for As and Sb, respectively. The most suitable volumes of pre-reduction reagents for 10 mL of sample were 4 mL of KI/ascorbic acid (5%) and 6 mL of HCl (conc.).
