Parallel laser micromachining based on diffractive optical elements with dispersion compensated femtosecond pulses

2013

We experimentally demonstrate multi-beam high spatial resolution laser micromachining with femtosecond pulses. The effects of chromatic aberrations as well as pulse stretching on the material processed due to diffraction were significantly mitigated by using a suited dispersion compensated module (DCM). This permits to increase the area of processing in a factor 3 in comparison with a conventional setup. Specifically, 52 blind holes have been drilled simultaneously onto a stainless steel sample with a 30 fs laser pulse in a parallel processing configuration.

New photonic devices for ultrafast pulse processing operating on the basis of the diffraction-dispersion analogy

2008

The space-time analogy is a well-known topic within wave optics that brings together some results from beam diffraction and pulse dispersion. On the above basis, and taking as starting point some classical concepts in Optics, several photonic devices have been proposed during the last few years with application in rapidly evolving fields such as ultrafast (femtosecond) optics or RF and microwave signal processing. In this contribution, we briefly review the above ideas with particular emphasis in the generation of trains of ultrafast pulses from periodic modulation of the phase of a CW laser source. This is the temporal analogue of Fresnel diffraction by a pure phase grating. Finally, we ex…

A wideband THz Time Domain Spectroscopy table-top system based on ultrafast pulsed laser: Model and experiments

2014

We present an analytical model carefully describing the time-frequency behavior of all the stages composing our whole Terahertz Time Domain Spectroscopy laser based system, from the THz pulses generation via Optical Rectification, to their detection through Electro-Optic Sampling technique, by way of diffraction, collecting and focusing effects. In order to prove the effectiveness of our work, we report on the comparison among the experimental waveforms and the simulation results.

Spatiotemporal reaction kinetics of an ultrafast photoreaction pathway visualized by time-resolved liquid x-ray diffraction.

2006

We have studied the reaction dynamics for HgI 2 in methanol by using time-resolved x-ray diffraction (TRXD). Although numerous time-resolved spectroscopic studies have provided ample information about the early dynamics of HgI 2 , a comprehensive reaction mechanism in the solution phase spanning from picoseconds up to microseconds has been lacking. Here we show that TRXD can provide this information directly and quantitatively. Picosecond optical pulses triggered the dissociation of HgI 2 , and 100-ps-long x-ray pulses from a synchrotron probed the evolving structures over a wide temporal range. To theoretically explain the diffracted intensities, the structural signal from the solute, the…

The Hamilton–Jacobi Equation

2001

We already know that canonical transformations are useful for solving mechanical problems. We now want to look for a canonical transformation that transforms the 2N coordinates (q i , p i ) to 2N constant values (Q i , P i ), e.g., to the 2N initial values \((q_{i}^{0},p_{i}^{0})\) at time t = 0. Then the problem would be solved, q = q(q0, p0, t), p = p(q0, p0, t).

Community composition of soil microarthropods of acid forest soils as affected by wood ash application

2002

Summary The responses of soil microarthropod communities of acid forest soils to wood ash-application was studied both in a sixty years old pine forest stand (wood ash dose: 3000kg ha —1 ) and in laboratory microcosms (wood ash dose: 5000kg ha —1 ). We also tested whether microarthropod communities stressed with wood ash were more sensitive to an additional disturbance, drought, than the microarthropod communities in the ash-free soil. Microarthropods were sampled five times during the field experiment and four times during the laboratory experiment. At each sampling the abundance and community structure of microarthropods were analysed. In the field the number of collembolans, and in the l…

Pd nanoparticles immobilized on the poly-dopamine decorated halloysite nanotubes hybridized with N-doped porous carbon monolayer: A versatile catalys…

2020

A hybrid catalyst, Pd@Hal-pDA-NPC, with the utility for promoting both C–C coupling reactions (Sonogashira, Heck and Suzuki reactions) and hydrogenation of nitrocompounds is prepared through two main steps. First, Pd(0) nanoparticles was immobilized on the poly-dopamine decorated halloysite nanotubes (Hal-pDA) and then Pd@Hal-pDA was hybridized with the layers of a novel multi-N-doped porous carbon monolayer derived from 4,4′,4″-((1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triyl)tris(azanediyl))tribenzonitrile. The results established that the catalyst could catalyze all the reactions efficiently under mild reaction condition. Moreover Pd@Hal-pDA-NPC exhibited high recyclability (up to ten reac…

Benzoxetes and Benzothietes ¾ Heterocyclic Analogues of Benzocyclobutene

2012

Benzo-condensed four-ring heterocycles, such as benzoxetes 1 and benzothietes 3 represent multi-purpose starting compounds for the preparation of various higher heterocyclic ring systems. The thermal or photochemical valence isomerizations between the benzenoid forms 1,3 and the higher reactive o-quinoid structures 2,4 provide the basis for the synthetic applications. On the other hand, this valence isomerization impedes in particular the generation and storage of 1 because the thermal equilibrium 1 ⇆ 2 is completely on the side of 2. Thus, the number of erroneous or questionable benzoxete structures published to date is surprisingly high. On the contrary, the thermal equilibrium 3 ⇆ 4 is o…

Mapping geographical inequalities in access to drinking water and sanitation facilities in low-income and middle-income countries, 2000-17.

2020

Background: Universal access to safe drinking water and sanitation facilities is an essential human right, recognised in the Sustainable Development Goals as crucial for preventing disease and improving human wellbeing. Comprehensive, high-resolution estimates are important to inform progress towards achieving this goal. We aimed to produce highresolution geospatial estimates of access to drinking water and sanitation facilities. Methods: We used a Bayesian geostatistical model and data from 600 sources across more than 88 low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) to estimate access to drinking water and sanitation facilities on continuous continent-wide surfaces from 2000 to 2017, and…
