ICAnDoiT: the impact of computerised adaptive corrective feedback on L2 English learners

The present dissertation examines the impact of (computerised) adaptive corrective feedback, that is, feedback dynamically adapting to learners’ abilities, in English as a second/foreign language (L2) and explores the ways to maximise this impact. The study was inspired by the sociocultural perspective on development, which had implications for the interpretation of the results, including those obtained through statistical data analyses. The article discusses the difficulties of diagnosing speaking skills in the situation of matriculation examination, resulting from the specific nature of spoken language varieties and texts implementation in these variants. Factors that should be taken into account when formulating criteria for assessing speech and conversation exams are: complex and holistic structure of spoken speech, transience of audible text, the spontaneity of live speech, the power of nonverbal codes, a significant stigma of a dialog, and the influence of situational context on the course of communicative interaction. A case formulation model for the assessment of psychological problems among deafblind persons

In order to describe and understand possible problems associated with deafblindness we applied a functional analysis case formulation strategy and Functional Analytic Clinical Case Diagrams (FACCD). We collected clinical assessment data from deafblind persons who were experiencing multiple psychological problems as reported by their healthcare professionals. The data were collected after the healthcare professionals were trained in functional analyses and in applying FACCD. Can a cheat sheet in an EFL test engage and empower students?

Although occasionally used in language classrooms, cheat-sheet tests have not been explored in foreign or second language education research. This study experimented with cheat-sheet tests in the teaching of EFL in a Finnish upper secondary school. The participants, 101 students, could make a cheat sheet for the grammar part of their English test. A total of 92 students prepared the cheat sheet, nine did not. Students’ cheat sheets, test results and comments constituted the data for this study, analysed both qualitatively and quantitatively.
