Validity and reliability of the Migraine-Treatment Optimization Questionnaire.

2009

Our aim was to establish the validity and reliability of a patient-rated Migraine Treatment Optimization Questionnaire (M-TOQ in primary care. Patients who met International Classification of Headache Disorders, 2nd edn criteria for migraine completed a 19-item questionnaire containing candidate items for the M-TOQ and three questionnaires designed to test convergent/construct validity [Migraine Disability Assessment Scale (MIDAS), Headache Impact Test (HIT)-6 and Migraine-Specific Quality of Life Scale (MSSQoL)]. A 15-item (M-TOQ15) and a five-item (M-TOQ-5) questionnaire were derived. Two hundred and fifty-three adult patients were recruited. Five treatment optimization domains were iden…

Implementation of augmented reality in operative dentistry learning.

2017

Objective To evaluate the efficacy of augmented reality (AR) in the gaining of knowledge and skills amongst dental students in the design of cavity preparations and analyse their degree of satisfaction. Material and methods AR cavity models were prepared for use with computers and mobile devices. Forty-one students were divided into two groups (traditional teaching methods vs AR). Questionnaires were designed to evaluate knowledge and skills, with the administration of a satisfaction questionnaire for those using AR. The degree of compliance with the standards in cavity design was assessed. The Mann-Whitney U-test was used to compare knowledge and skills between the two groups, and the Wilc…

Alemtuzumab treatment of multiple sclerosis in real-world clinical practice: A report from a single Italian center

2020

Abstract Background Alemtuzumab, is a compound approved for highly active MS, and, in Europe, employed after the use of other disease-modifying treatments (DMTs) with an escalation approach or used as a first therapeutic option. The occurrence of secondary autoimmune adverse events and or infections can differ depending on the employed approach. Objective To evaluate the efficacy and safety of alemtuzumab in real-world MS population that encompassed patients previously treated with other DMTs. Methods 35 patients, treated with alemtuzumab in a single MS Center, were followed for at least 36 months. The study investigated the prevalence of patients reaching the phase of the non-active diseas…

Italian version of the Chicago multiscale depression inventory: translation, adaptation and testing in people with multiple sclerosis.

2004

Depression is the commonest psychiatric disturbance in people with multiple sclerosis (MS), with prevalence higher than in the general population and other chronic diseases. However, accurate assessment of depressive symptoms can be biased by somatic symptoms which are part of both MS and depression. We translated and adapted into Italian the Chicago multiscale depression inventory (CMDI) and assessed its acceptability, internal consistency and test-retest reliability in 213 MS outpatients and 213 individually matched healthy controls. The questionnaire was also tested in 32 people with major depression. Acceptability, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability were good overall. We …

Ice water test in multiple sclerosis: A pilot trial.

2018

OBJECTIVES To investigate the significance of the ice water test in patients with multiple sclerosis and to evaluate a novel ice water test nomogram in a large patient cohort. METHODS A total of 201 ice water tests of patients with multiple sclerosis were retrospectively evaluated. Incontinence episodes in 24 h and sex were correlated with the ice water test. Furthermore, an ice water test nomogram was developed in order to categorize the detrusor overactivity in severity degrees. Descriptive statistics were carried out for population characteristics. Correlations of categorical variables were calculated by the χ2 -test. The independent t-test was carried out for correlations of continuous …

Efficacy of different rituximab therapeutic strategies in patients with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders

2019

Abstract Objective To evaluate disease activity according to rituximab (RTX) induction and maintenance regimens in a multicenter real-life dataset of NMOSD patients. Methods This is an observational-retrospective multicentre study including patients with NMOSD treated with RTX in 21 Italian and 1 Swiss centers. Demographics, relapse rate and adverse events over the follow-up were summarized taking into account induction strategy (two-1 g infusions at a 15-day interval (IND-A) vs. 375 mg/m2/week infusions for one month (IND-B)) and maintenance therapy (regimen A (M-A) with fixed time-points infusions vs. regimen B (M-B) based on cytofluorimetric driven reinfusion regimens, the least further …

A retinal snap shot may indicate individual risk for cardiovascular disease — The MIPH Eye&Health Study

2014

Examination of retinal vasculature can be used to non-invasively quantify changes within the microvasculature of the human body and might be a predictor of cardiovascular disease. This study evaluates associations of the structure of the retinal vasculature with established risk factors for cardiovascular disease.A cross-sectional study was performed in a working age population. Several systemic cardiovascular parameters were analyzed and PROCAM- and SCORE-risk estimates were calculated. A quantitative ophthalmological examination including digital fundus imaging has taken place. Central retinal arterial/venous equivalents (CRAE/CRVE) and arterio-venous ratio (AVR) were analyzed using valid…

Quality of life, needs, and interest among cocaine users: differences by cocaine use intensity and lifetime severity of addiction to cocaine.

2010

We examined the quality of life (QoL) of 149 patients who were recruited in 2005 at outpatient treatment centers for cocaine dependence in Spain. Important life areas and life areas with potential need and interest to change in order to improve the QoL were analyzed in terms of patients? cocaine use intensity within the previous six months and lifetime severity addiction to cocaine. The Spanish versions of the Drug User Quality of Life Scale and the Lifetime Severity Index for Cocaine were used to measure QoL, needs and interest, and severity addiction to cocaine. The data analysis employed t-tests, linear regression, Mann?Whitney U tests, multivariate regression, and chi-square tests. Tail…

Increased Risk of Acute Myeloid Leukemias and Myelodysplastic Syndromes in Patients Who Received Thiopurine Treatment for Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

2014

Background & Aims Treatment with immunosuppressive thiopurines such as azathioprine is associated with an increased risk of leukemogenesis. We assessed the risk of myeloid disorders, such as acute myeloid leukemia and myelodysplastic syndromes, in a large cohort of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in France. Methods We performed a prospective observational study of 19,486 patients with IBD enrolled in the Cancers Et Surrisque Associe aux Maladies inflammatoires intestinales En France (CESAME) study from May 2004 through June 2005; patients were followed through December 31, 2007. The incidence of myeloid disorders in the general population, which was used for reference, was de…

Intraoperative brain mapping during awake surgery in symptomatic supratentorial cavernomas.

2021

Abstract Background Complete resection of symptomatic supratentorial cavernoma (SCA) and removal of the surrounding gliotic area is recommended to minimize the risk of persistent seizures or (re)bleeding. Surgery of SCA located in an eloquent area, can carry out severe postoperative neurological morbidity. We report a study aimed to assess feasibility, extent of resection and outcome after surgical removal of CA by cortico-subcortical intraoperative brain stimulation (ioBS) in the awake patient. Methods Six patients diagnosed of symptomatic SCA located on an eloquent area and operated on while awake under local anaesthesia ioBS, were included. Preoperative planning included neuropsychologic…
