Adsorption dynamics of molecular nitrogen at an Fe(111) surface.
2017
We present an extensive theoretical study of N adsorption mechanisms on an Fe(111) surface. We combine the static analysis of a six-dimensional potential energy surface (6D-PES), based on ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations for the system, with quasi-classical trajectory (QCT) calculations to simulate the adsorption dynamics. There are four molecular adsorption states, usually called γ, δ, α, and ε, arising from our DFT calculations. We find that N adsorption in the γ-state is non-activated, while the threshold energy is associated with the entrance channel for the other three adsorption states. Our QCT calculations confirm that there are activated and nonactivated paths …
Synthesis and characterization of a Cu(II) complex of 2-benzylmercapto-5- methyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole (C10H10N2S 2)
2008
A Cu(II) complex of 2-benzylmercapto-5-methyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole was synthesized and characterized. The crystal structure of the copper complex and the free ligand were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction at room temperature: {[Cu(C10H10N2S2) 2(Cl)2], P1 triclinic, a = 8.1450(2) Å, b = 8.1690(2) Å, c = 10.8180(3) Å, α = 97.4040(12)°, β = 101.6270(11)°, γ = 116.1431(14)°; C10H10N2S2 ligand, Pbca orthorhombic, a = 8.7938(7) Å, b = 9.6491(7) Å, c = 25.3552(18) Å}. The metal complex framework consists of discrete units that provide crystalline stability through a network of van der Waals contacts. The Cu(II) is coordinated by two chloride ions and two 2-benzylmercapto-5-methyl-1,3,4- …
Diffraction by fractal metallic supergratings.
2007
The reflectance of corrugated surfaces with a fractal distribution of grooves is investigated. Triadic and polyadic Cantor fractal distributions are considered, and the reflected intensity is compared with that of the corresponding periodic structure. The self-similarity property of the response is analyzed when varying the depth of the grooves and the lacunarity parameter. The results confirm that the response is self-similar for the whole range of depths considered, and this property is also maintained for all values of the lacunarity parameter. © 2007 Optical Society of America. Temperature and doping dependence of normal state spectral properties in a two-orbital model for ferropnictides
2016
Using a second-order perturbative Green's functions approach we determined the normal state single-particle spectral function $A(\vec{k},\omega)$ employing a minimal effective model for iron-based superconductors. The microscopic model, used before to study magnetic fluctuations and superconducting properties, includes the two effective tight-binding bands proposed by S.Raghu et al. [Phys. Rev. B 77, 220503 (R) (2008)], and intra- and inter-orbital local electronic correlations, related to the Fe-3d orbitals. Here, we focus on the study of normal state electronic properties, in particular the temperature and doping dependence of the total density of states, $A(\omega)$, and of $A(\vec{k},\o…
Evolutionary sequences of rotating protoneutron stars
2004
We investigate the evolution of rigidly and differentially rotating protoneutron stars (PNSs) during the first twenty seconds of their life. We solve the equations describing stationary axisymmetric configurations in general relativity coupled to a finite temperature, relativistic equation of state, to obtain a sequence of quasi-equilibrium configurations describing the evolution of newly born neutron stars. Our estimates show that the scale of variation of the angular velocity in a PNSs is of the order of 7-10 km. We obtain the maximum rotation frequency that can be reached as the protoneutron stars deleptonizes and cools down, as well as other relevant parameters such as total angular mom…
The first observations of Mars with the Mariner 9 spacecraft discovered a desert landscape full of craters and mysterious river basins. Spirit and Opportunity have…
Search for new phenomena in final states with large jet multiplicities and missing transverse momentum at s√=8 TeV proton-proton collisions using the…
2013
A search is presented for new particles decaying to large numbers (7 or more) of jets, with missing transverse momentum and no isolated electrons or muons. This analysis uses 20.3 fb[superscript −1] of pp collision data at s√ = 8 TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The sensitivity of the search is enhanced by considering the number of b-tagged jets and the scalar sum of masses of large-radius jets in an event. No evidence is found for physics beyond the Standard Model. The results are interpreted in the context of various simplified supersymmetry-inspired models where gluinos are pair produced, as well as an mSUGRA/CMSSM model.
Simulation-based marginal likelihood for cluster strong lensing cosmology
2015
Comparisons between observed and predicted strong lensing properties of galaxy clusters have been routinely used to claim either tension or consistency with $\Lambda$CDM cosmology. However, standard approaches to such cosmological tests are unable to quantify the preference for one cosmology over another. We advocate approximating the relevant Bayes factor using a marginal likelihood that is based on the following summary statistic: the posterior probability distribution function for the parameters of the scaling relation between Einstein radii and cluster mass, $\alpha$ and $\beta$. We demonstrate, for the first time, a method of estimating the marginal likelihood using the X-ray selected …
Stability of hydrodynamical relativistic planar jets
2004
The effects of relativistic dynamics and thermodynamics in the development of Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities in planar, relativistic jets along the early phases (namely linear and saturation phases) of evolution has been studied by a combination of linear stability analysis and high-resolution numerical simulations for the most unstable first reflection modes in the temporal approach. Three different values of the jet Lorentz factor (5, 10 and 20) and a few different values of specific internal energy of the jet matter (from 0.08 to $60.0 c^2$) have been considered. Figures illustrating the evolution of the perturbations are also shown.
Assessment of a high-resolution central scheme for the solution of the relativistic hydrodynamics equations
2004
We assess the suitability of a recent high-resolution central scheme developed by Kurganov & Tadmor (2000) for the solution of the relativistic hydrodynamics equations. The novelty of this approach relies on the absence of Riemann solvers in the solution procedure. The computations we present are performed in one and two spatial dimensions in Minkowski spacetime. Standard numerical experiments such as shock tubes and the relativistic flat-faced step test are performed. As an astrophysical application the article includes two-dimensional simulations of the propagation of relativistic jets using both Cartesian and cylindrical coordinates. The simulations reported clearly show the capabili…
