Modeling of biomass smoke injection into the lower stratosphere by a large forest fire (Part I): reference simulation

Abstract. Wildland fires in boreal regions have the potential to initiate deep convection, so-called pyro-convection, due to their release of sensible heat. Under favorable atmospheric conditions, large fires can result in pyro-convection that transports the emissions into the upper troposphere and the lower stratosphere. Here, we present three-dimensional model simulations of the injection of fire emissions into the lower stratosphere by pyro-convection. Modeling X-ray emission from stellar coronae

By extrapolating from observationally derived surface magnetograms of low-mass stars we construct models of their coronal magnetic fields and compare the 3D field geometry with axial multipoles. AB Dor, which has a radiative core, has a very complex field, whereas V374 Peg, which is completely convective, has a simple dipolar field. We calculate global X-ray emission measures assuming that the plasma trapped along the coronal loops is in hydrostatic equilibrium and compare the differences between assuming isothermal coronae, or by considering a loop temperature profiles. Evidence of small-scale magnetic concentrations dragged by vortex motion of solar photospheric plasma

Vortex-type motions have been measured by tracking bright points in high-resolution observations of the solar photosphere. These small-scale motions are thought to be determinant in the evolution of magnetic footpoints and their interaction with plasma and therefore likely to play a role in heating the upper solar atmosphere by twisting magnetic flux tubes. We report the observation of magnetic concentrations being dragged towards the center of a convective vortex motion in the solar photosphere from high-resolution ground-based and space-borne data. The influence of absorbed solar radiation by Saharan dust on hurricane genesis

To date, the radiative impact of dust and the Sahar an air layer (SAL) on North Atlantic hurricane activity is not yet known. According to previous studies, dust stabilizes the atmosphere due to absorption of solar radiation but thus shifts convection to regions more conducive for hurricane genesis. AbstractThis study presents results from a model intercomparison project, focusing on the range of responses in deep convective cloud updrafts to varying cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) concentrations among seven state-of-the-art cloud-resolving models. Simulations of scattered convective clouds near Houston, Texas, are conducted, after being initialized with both relatively low and high CCN concentrations. Deep convective updrafts are identified, and trends in the updraft intensity and frequency are assessed. Synthesis and Stability Region of Stoichiometric Nanocrystalline Vanadium−Iron Spinel Powders

Vanadium-iron spinels with nanometric sizes have been synthesized by a soft chemistry route. This way of elaboration consists of a coprecipitation followed by thermal treatments at low temperatures. The last thermal annealing is performed under a reducing atmosphere in order to obtain the exact oxygen stoichiometry (four oxygen atoms for three metal atoms in AB 2 O 4 ). Because of the low temperatures used, very low oxygen partial pressures (between 10 -20 and 10 -30 Pa) have to be applied. For this purpose, a reducing setup has been used. Quality and shelf-life of whole and filleted Coryphaena hippurus, stored with modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) and natural antioxidants from halophytes (HAL), were investigated. Fillets were divided into control, simply sealed in trays; MAP, preserved by modified atmosphere (45% CO2, 50% N-2, 5% O-2); and MAP-HAL, pretreated with antioxidants and preserved by MAP. Whole and filleted fish were stored at -1 +/- 0.5 degrees C for 18days. The quality of the samples was analyzed at the time of packaging and after 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, and 18days. Towards a lexicogrammatical pattern in Swedish crime novels

The success of Swedish crime novels has been noted and discussed at length. Much of this commentary refers to a salient characteristic atmosphere which seems to be a common feature of most if not all Scandinavian crime novels. In this paper the potential of some recurring lexicogrammatical features to construct this characteristically gloomy and sombre atmosphere is presented and discussed. Fluorine adsorption by volcanic soils at Mt. Etna, Italy

Abstract Fluorine adsorption experiments were performed on 28 samples of the first 5 cm of topsoil collected on the flanks of Mt. Etna. The soil samples were equilibrated with F-rich rainwater (3.25 mg/L) at a soil/water weight ratio of 1/25. Aliquots of the supernatant were collected after 1, 7, 72, 720 and 5640 h and analysed for F content. Vulnerability of the North Water ecosystem to climate change

High Arctic ecosystems and Indigenous livelihoods are tightly linked and exposed to climate change, yet assessing their sensitivity requires a long-term perspective. Here, we assess the vulnerability of the North Water polynya, a unique seaice ecosystem that sustains the world’s northernmost Inuit communities and several keystone Arctic species. We reconstruct mid-to-late Holocene changes in sea ice, marine primary production, and little auk colony dynamics through multi-proxy analysis of marine and lake sediment cores.
