The effects of armed conflict on schooling in Sub-Saharan Africa

2012

In the past decades, most of the countries in sub-Saharan Africa have been affected by armed conflicts. By means of a time-series cross-sectional (TSCS) database, we attempt to measure the impact of war on a sample of 43 countries in Africa from 1950 to 2010. These conflicts, and especially civil wars, are shown to have a strong negative effect on the educational performances of the countries studied. The rate of children not attending school, as well as secondary school enrollment rates, seems particularly sensitive to periods of conflict. It also appears that government expenditures in social sectors including education are a positive factor in increasing school enrollment. In contrast, m…

Impact of Mediation devices on the Museum Visit Experience and on Visitors' Behavioural Intentions

2012

This study draws on the experiential approach and has two main goals: to explore the different dimensions of the museum experience regardless of whether it is mediated by mediation devices (e.g., audio guides, interactive terminals, SmartPhones, tablets, augmented reality), and to identify the impact of such devices on visitors' behavioural intentions. The authors conduct a qualitative and exploratory investigation to address the following questions: Does the development of such devices affect both experience dimensions and the audience's behavioural intentions? Which components of a museum visit are concerned?

Education and long-term outcomes in first episode psychosis: 10-year follow-up study of the PAFIP cohort

2021

[Background] Lower levels of education have been associated with the development of psychosis. Investigating educational achievement in the first episode of psychosis (FEP) patients may shed light on the origins of the alterations and on the variability of outcomes in psychotic disorders.

Multidimensional prognostic index (MPI) predicts successful application for disability social benefits in older people

2020

Aim: The economic recognition of disability is of importance in daily practice, but the tools used in older people are still limited. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the effectiveness of the multidimensional prognostic index (MPI) to identify frail older subjects to be submitted to civil invalidity application for disability benefits including Attendance Allowance (AA) indemnity, Carer’s Leave (Law 104) and/or Parking Card for people with disabilities. Methods: From March 2018 to January 2019, 80 older people were included. The MPI was calculated from comprehensive geriatric assessment information including eight different domains. Civil benefits included attendance allowance (AA) indemn…

Care needs among the dependent population in Spain: an empirical approach.

2005

The objective of the present paper was to identify the profile and needs of social and healthcare users in Spain who required long-term care. To achieve this goal, an extensive empirical study was carried out in 2001 of a typical southern European region: the Valencia Autonomous Region in Spain. The method used was a questionnaire-based survey. The data collection instrument was a questionnaire comprising 119 questions grouped into seven sections: social and demographic data; clinical diagnosis and treatment; living environment; degree of dependence in activities of daily living (ADLs); cognitive state; social support; and the social, demographic and attendance data of the carer, if availab…

Media Control in the Twentieth Century

2015

Media control by which the duplication and distribution of knowledge are under attendance is as old as modern media. Efforts at control emerged rather quickly after the printing press was invented, first inaugurated by the Catholic Church but soon adopted by the state(s). The reasons were similar but the conditions varied from country to country. The decline of government control began in England at the end of the seventeenth century; other countries followed with more or less delay. At the end of the nineteenth century, pre-censorship had generally been abolished in the European countries; however, the twentieth century did not become an era of press freedom as expected. This resulted from…

Group-based intervention on attention and executive functions in the school context

2017

The objective of the study was to examine the effects of a group-based behavioural, cognitive and skills training intervention (Maltti) provided in schools for elementary school pupils with attention and executive function (EF) deficits. The treatment effects were identified by comparing an intervention group (n = 46) with a waitlist control group (n = 26). Specific effects of the intervention on behavioural deficits in attention and EF in a classroom setting as well as on academic skills were examined. Our analysis indicated that significant intervention effects could be found in the behavioural manifestation of attentional and executive skills in the classroom setting among children (n = …
