Illusory contours from pictorially three-dimensional inducing elements: counterevidence for Parks and Rock's example.

In 1990 Parks and Rock claimed that, in pictorially three-dimensional (3-D) inducing patterns, an illusory figure does not emerge if a clear occlusion event is not present. A new pictorially 3-D pattern is presented which contradicts this claim. Two experiments were carried out. The first was aimed at ascertaining the presence of an illusory figure in the new 3-D pattern; the second was aimed at offering evidence that in Parks and Rock's pattern the disappearance of the illusory figure could be due to local interferences caused by the line elements in contact with the inducing borders. The results tend to contradict Parks and Rock's conclusions.

Strategic inhibition of distractors with visual working memory contents after involuntary attention capture

AbstractPrevious research has suggested that visual working memory (VWM) contents had a guiding effect on selective attention, and once participants realized that the distractors shared the same information with VWM contents in the search task, they would strategically inhibit the potential distractors with VWM contents. The Effect of Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy on the Risk of ADHD in the Offspring

Objective: Evidence suggests that perinatal factors may contribute to the development of ADHD. Our objective was to examine the association between hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) and ADHD, and behavioral difficulties among 7-year-old children. Method: The study cohort consisted of 13,192 children (weighted = 13,500) who participated in the Millennium Cohort Study (MCS) at age 7. HDP (raised blood pressure, preeclampsia, eclampsia, and toxemia) were reported by mothers 9 months postdelivery. ADHD was reported by parents at age 7 years. Changes in the temporal properties of the speech signal provide important cues for phoneme identification. An impairment or inability to detect such changes may adversely affect one's ability to understand spoken speech. Selecting one of two regular sound sequences : Perceptual and motor effects of tempo

This study assessed the influence of tempo on selecting a sound sequence. In Exp. 1, synchronization with one of the two regular subsequences in a complex sequence was measured. 30 participants indicated a preference for the fastest subsequence when subsequences were in a slow tempo range (≥ 500 msec. IOI), and with the slower subsequence when they were in the fast tempo range (≤ 300 msec. IOI). These results were replicated using a perceptual task (Exp. 2 and 3) in which the 30 listeners had to detect a temporal irregularity in one of the two subsequences. Older adults, compared to younger adults, are more likely to attend to pleasant situations and avoid unpleasant ones. Yet, it is unclear whether such a phenomenon may be generalized to musical emotions. In this study, we investigated whether there is an age-related difference in how musical emotions are experienced and how positive and negative music influences attention performances in a target identification task. The development of involuntary and voluntary attention from childhood to adulthood: A combined behavioral and event-related potential study

Abstract Objective This study investigated auditory involuntary and voluntary attention in children aged 6–8, 10–12 and young adults. The strength of distracting stimuli (20% and 5% pitch changes) and the amount of allocation of attention were varied. Methods In an auditory distraction paradigm event-related potentials (ERPs) and behavioral data were measured from subjects either performing a sound duration discrimination task or watching a silent video.
