Sound attenuation and anharmonic damping in solids with correlated disorder

2010

We study via self-consistent Born approximation a model for sound waves in a disordered environment, in which the local fluctuations of the shear modulus G are spatially correlated with a certain correlation length The theory predicts an enhancement of the density of states over Debye's omega(2) law (boson peak) whose intensity increases for increasing correlation length, and whose frequency position is shifted downwards as lg. Moreover, the predicted disorder-induced sound attenuation coefficient r(k) obeys a universal scaling law F(k) = f (ke) for a given variance of G. Finally, the inclusion of the lowest-order contribution to the anharmonic sound damping into the theory allows us to rec…

Symmetries in mirror nuclei $^{31}$S and $^{31}$P

2018

Excited states in mirror nuclei 31S and 31P were populated in the 1n and 1p exit channels, respectively, of the reaction 20Ne + 12C. The beam of 20Ne, with an energy of 33 MeV, was delivered for the first time by the Piave-Alpi accelerator of the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. Angular correlations of coincident pairs and Doppler-shift attenuation lifetime measurements in 31S and 31P were performed using the multidetector array GASP in conjunction with the EUCLIDES charged particle detector. A comparison of the determined B(E1) strengths of the analog mirror 7/2- → 5/2+ transitions indicates the presence of a violation of isospin symmetry.

Lifetime Measurements with the Doppler Shift Attenuation Method Using a Thick Homogeneous Production Target — Verification of the Method

2016

International audience; Doppler Shift Attenuation Method (DSAM) analysis of excited-state lifetimes normally employs thin production targets mounted on a thick stopper foil (“backing”) serving to slow down and stop the recoiling nuclei of interest in a well-defined manner. Use of a thick, homogeneous production target leads to a more complex analysis as it results in a substantial decrease in the energy of the incident projectile which traverses the target with an associated change in the production cross section of the residues as a function of penetration depth. Here, a DSAM lifetime analysis using a thick homogeneous target has been verified using the Doppler broadened lineshapes of γ ra…

Acoustic dynamics of network-forming glasses at mesoscopic wavelengths

2013

The lack of long-range structural order in amorphous solids induces well known thermodynamic anomalies, which are the manifestation of distinct peculiarities in the vibrational spectrum. Although the impact of such anomalies vanishes in the long wavelength, elastic continuum limit, it dominates at length scales comparable to interatomic distances, implying an intermediate transition regime still poorly understood. Here we report a study of such mesoscopic domains by means of a broadband version of picosecond photo-acoustics, developed to coherently generate and detect hypersonic sound waves in the sub-THz region with unprecedented sampling efficiency. We identify a temperature-dependent fra…

Accuracy of stereotactic coordinate transformation using a localisation frame and computed tomographic imaging

1999

The accuracy of coordinate transformation from the computed tomographic (CT) space to the stereotactic frame space was analysed for frame-based stereotactic systems which use a localisation frame and coordinate transformation based on matrix calculation. The coordinate transformation was divided into three consecutive steps: (1) transforming the localisation frame into the CT image built up from pixels with distinct attenuation values, (2) determining the rod centres of the localisation frame in the CT image, and (3) coordinate transformation from the image to the frame space using the centres of the rods in the image space and algebraic, matrix-based calculation. The error contribution at …

Polynomial Regression and Measurement Error

2020

Many of the phenomena of interest in information systems (IS) research are nonlinear, and it has consequently been recognized that by applying linear statistical models (e.g., linear regression), we may ignore important aspects of these phenomena. To address this issue, IS researchers are increasingly applying nonlinear models to their datasets. One popular analytical technique for the modeling and analysis of nonlinear relationships is polynomial regression, which in its simplest form fits a "U-shaped" curve to the data. However, the use of polynomial regression can be problematic when the independent variables are contaminated with measurement error, and the implications of error can be m…

Radiation Shielding Study of Advanced Data and Power Management Systems (ADPMS) Housing Using Geant4

2008

The tendency to reduce the spacecraft mass covers nowadays all components of the spacecraft. One potential target is to reduce the mass of electronics and its housings. The use of composite materials, especially CFRP is a well known and vastly used approach to mass reduction. In cost reduction the use of standard (non-space qualified) electronics has increased. These commercial circuits and other components cannot tolerate as high radiation levels as space qualified components. Therefore the use of standard electronics components poses challenge in terms of the radiation protection capability of the ADPMS housings. The main goal of this study is to give an insight on the radiation shielding…

An LMI approach to quantized H<inf>∞</inf> control of uncertain linear systems with network-induced delays

2010

This paper deals with a convex optimization approach to the problem of robust network-based H ∞ control for linear systems connected over a common digital communication network with norm-bounded parameter uncertainties. Firstly, we investigate the effect of both the output quantization levels and the network conditions under static quantizers. Secondly, by introducing a descriptor technique, using Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional and a suitable change of variables, new required sufficient conditions are established in terms of delay-range-dependent linear matrix inequalities for the existence of the desired network-based quantized controllers with simultaneous consideration of network induced…
