The Process of CEO Dismissal: An Exploratory study

The decision to change the CEO is one of the most important decisions of the Board of Directors in a company. This study increases understanding of the process that leads to a Board’s decision to dismiss the CEO under conditions of poor performance, and of the meaning of attributions in CEO dismissal. The role of the Chair of the Board in this process is also explored. An exploratory, empirical study concerning nine CEO dismissal processes is conducted based on open-ended interviews with seven Chairpersons of the Board. This article traces the philosophical idea of self-perception from the times of ancient Stoicism to the thirteenth century by analyzing the views of Seneca, Augustine, and Olivi. The central argument is that they defend the same idea according to which self-preservation and the appropriate use of one’s body requires awareness thereof, despite the obvious contextual differences and the uncertainty of direct historical connections between the authors. The analysis undertaken in the article focuses on a group of memes selected from the database which drew on culture-specific references. Specifically, they embrace the memories of socialist times and call on references to comic films and easily recognized characters in order to bring out the re-discovered absurdity of the current Covid situation. Different emotional experiences at the work place are evaluated in respect to their influence on job satisfaction. A sample of 75 Japanese employees and 169 German employees rated their emotional level following daily hassles in the work place that were attributed on the two dimensions: locus of causality and controllability. It was predicted that the same attribution pattern of daily hassles leads to different emotional responses and different levels of job satisfaction between employees with an interdependent and independent cultural background. Explanations of success and failure in management learning : What can we learn from Nokia's rise and fall

International audience; In this paper, we study the changing explanations of success and failure over the course of a firm's history. We build on a discursive approach that highlights the role of narrative attributions in making sense of corporate performance. Specifically, we analyze how the Nokia Corporation was framed first as a success and later as a failure and how these dimensions of performance were explained in various actors' narrative accounts.
