Gentamicin increases nitric oxide production and induces hearing loss in guinea pigs.

2008

Objectives/Hypothesis: Gentamicin application is an important therapeutic option for Meniere's disease. However, even if given at intervals, a destruction of the cochlea was often observed in various animal models together with an increased content of nitric oxide (NO) and reactive oxygen species. The present study was undertaken to identify the correlation between hearing threshold alteration and the NO production in the lateral wall and organ of Corti of the guinea pig in response to gentamicin application. Study Design: Prospective animal study in guinea pigs. Methods: A single dose of gentamicin (10 mg/kg body weight) was injected intratympanally into male guinea pigs and the auditory b…

Auditory Neuropathy in Children

2001

Auditory neuropathy is a sensorineural disorder characterized by absent or abnormal auditory brainstem evoked potentials and normal cochlear outer hair cell function. A variety of processes is thought to be involved in its pathophysiology and their influence on hearing may be different. We present here the diagnostic sequence and management of two new cases of auditory neuropathy in breastfeeding children.

An experimental comparative study of dexamethasone, melatonin and tacrolimus in noise-induced hearing loss.

2008

The calcineurin inhibitor tacrolimus (TCR) and the pineal gland hormone and antioxidant melatonin (MLT) have been shown to possess otoprotective properties against noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). In contrast, dexamethasone (DXM) was not effective as an otoprotective agent against NIHL. Further studies are needed to understand the exact molecular mechanisms involved.Exposure to noise pollution and use of audio devices for long periods of time at high volume is known to cause hearing loss or NIHL. Our goal was to evaluate the effectiveness of various known compounds such as the anti-inflammatory DXM, the antioxidant MLT and the immunosuppressant TCR against NIHL.Thirty-two Wistar rats were…

First Experiences With the Ponto⢢ SuperPower Osseointegrated Device

2018

Osseointegrated hearing devices Power and SuperPower present indications for bone thresholds of 55 and 65 dB respectively. We conducted a prospective observational study of a series of six cases with mixed hearing loss for whom implantation of the DAO Ponto™ Super-Power was performed. Tonal and verbal evaluations without and with background noise (HINTS) were performed prior to implantation and six months after adaptation. All the participants showed improvement in tonal and verbal results, varying according to the degree of contralateral hearing loss. The verbal results with background noise were noteworthy, where most of the patients obtained a signal-to-noise ratio between 2 and 4 dB. Th…

A Prospective Audit of the Complications of Loop Ileostomy Construction and Takedown

2004

Aim: A prospective review of the complications of ileostomy construction and takedown. Materials and Methods: One hundred twenty-seven consecutive patients undergoing construction of a loop ileostomy were included in a prospective nonrandomized computer database. Complications of the loop ileostomy were assessed prior to and after closure. Three closure techniques were performed [enterotomy suture (25.7%), resection and hand sewn (31.2%) or stapled anastomosis (43.1%)] and compared. Results: One hundred twenty-seven (73 male, 54 female) patients, mean age 54 years were included from 1992 to 2002. Seventy-two patients underwent anterio…

Doxycycline reduces nitric oxide production in guinea pig inner ears.

2011

Abstract Objective Gentamicin application is an important therapeutic option to control vertigo spells in Meniere's disease. However, even in the case of low-dose intratympanic application, gentamicin might contribute to a pathological NO-increase leading to cochlear damage and hearing impairment. The study was performed to evaluate the nitric oxide (NO) reducing capacity of doxycycline in the inner ear after NO-induction by gentamicin. Methods In a prospective animal study, a single dose of gentamicin (10 mg/kg body weight) was injected intratympanically into male guinea pigs (n = 48). The auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) were recorded prior to application and 3, 5 and 7 days afterwards…

Diagnostic subgroups of developmental dyslexia have different deficits in neural processing of tones and phonemes.

2004

The present study addressed auditory processing in 8-11-year-old children with developmental dyslexia by means of event-related brain potentials (ERP). Cortical sound reception was evaluated by recording N250 responses to syllables and tones and cortical sound discrimination by analyzing the mismatch negativity (MMN) to syllable and tone changes. We found that both cortical sound reception and sound discrimination were impaired in dyslexic children. The analysis of the data obtained from two dyslexic subgroups, Dyslexics-1 being impaired in non-word reading (or both non-word and frequent word reading) and Dyslexics-2 in frequent word reading but not in non-word reading, revealed that the MM…

Auditory event-related potentials in subcortical vascular cognitive impairment and in Alzheimer's disease.

2006

Few studies exist on ERPs and patients with subcortical vascular cognitive impairment (SVCI). This latter is a quite homogeneous subtype of vascular dementia whose cognitive profile is quite different from that of Alzheimer disease (AD).The present study aims at comparing the ERPs profile both in patients with SVCI and in patients with AD.ERPs and psychometric tests were collected from 39 healthy elderly controls, 51 patients with SVCI and 43 patients with AD. Subjects mentally count high pitched target tones that were randomly intermixed with low pitched frequent tones. We measured ERPs latencies (N1, P2, N2 and P3), and interpeak latencies (N1-P3, N1-P2, N1-N2).Grand averaged potentials i…

Auditory event-related potentials at preschool age in children born very preterm.

2014

Abstract Objective To assess auditory event-related potentials at preschool age in children born very preterm (VP, 27.4±1.9 gestational weeks, n =70) with a high risk of cognitive dysfunction. Methods We used an oddball paradigm consisting of a standard tone randomly replaced by one of three infrequent deviants (differing in frequency, sound direction or duration). Results The P1 and N2 latencies were inversely correlated to age (50–63months) both in VP ( r =−0.451, p r =−0.305, p= 0.01, respectively) and term born controls (TC; n =15). VP children had smaller P1 than near-term ( n =12) or TC (1.70±0.17μV vs 2.68±0.41 and 2.92±0.43, respectively; p Conclusions Our data suggest a fast matura…

Does mismatch negativity show differences in reading-disabled children compared to normal children and children with attention deficit?

2007

An auditory event-related potential (ERP) component called mismatch negativity (MMN) was examined in three groups of children (n = 63) aged 8-14 years. A control group comprised healthy children in second or sixth grade of comprehensive school (n = 21). The two clinical groups included children with reading disability (RD) (n = 21) and children with attention deficit (AD) (n = 21). MMN was elicited in a passive oddball paradigm by duration changes in a continuous sound, consisting of two alternating (600 and 800 Hz) 100 msec tones. The deviant tones were either 30 or 50 msec in duration. Both deviants elicited a clear MMN in all groups. Statistical analyses showed no systematic difference i…
