Microwave-Assisted Synthesis of New Selenazole Derivatives with Antiproliferative Activity

2013

New aryl-hydrazinyl-1,3-selenazole and aroyl-hydrazonyl-1,3-selenazoles were synthesized via Hantzsch type condensation reactions of selenosemicarbazides with α-halogenocarbonyl derivatives, under classical versus microwave heating conditions. Excellent yields and shorter reaction times were obtained under irradiation conditions. The structures of the synthesized compounds were assigned based on spectroscopic data (FT-IR, 1 H-NMR), MS and elemental analysis. Selenazole derivatives were screened for their anti-proliferative effects against two leukemia cell lines (CCRF-CEM and HL60) and three carcinoma cell lines (MDA-MB231, HCT116 and U87MG).

Measurement of polarization amplitudes and CP asymmetries in B 0 → Φk *(892)0

2014

An angular analysis of the decay $B^0 \to \phi K^*(892)^0$ is reported based on a $pp$ collision data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb$^{-1}$, collected at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV with the LHCb detector. The P-wave amplitudes and phases are measured with a greater precision than by previous experiments, and confirm about equal amounts of longitudinal and transverse polarization. The S-wave $K^+ \pi^-$ and $K^+K^-$ contributions are taken into account and found to be significant. A comparison of the $B^0 \to \phi K^*(892)^0$ and $\bar{B}^0 \to \phi \bar{K}^*(892)^0$ results shows no evidence for direct CP violation in the rate asymmetry, in th…

PATIENT’S COMPLIANCE TO BCG. DO WE ADEQUATELY CONSIDER IT?

2014

Introduction: Several studies and meta-analysis demonstrated that BCG is the best treatment for conservative management of high-risk NMI-BC with a net benefit in terms of both recurrence-free and progression-free survival (1, 2). Maintenance lasting minimum one year is recommended. In spite of the effectiveness, the amount of patients who complete the manteinance schedule does not exceed 50% (3). The reasons of BCG maintenance interruption remain still unclear. The aim of our study was to investigate the causes of low adherence to 1-year full dose maintenance BCG in a large series. Patients and Methods: The clinical files of consecutive patients affected by T1 HG NMI-BC and undergoing adjuv…

An Overview of the Hypogene Caves of Sicily

2017

Karst in Sicily develops in both Messinian gypsum and Mesozoic or Tertiary limestone rocks. Caves are also found in the basalts of Mount Etna. Except for some rare cases, until recently most caves developed in limestone were considered to be of epigenetic origin. The discovery of gypsum in some of these caves, and especially detailed morphological studies, have allowed defining a hypogenic origin for a dozen of caves up to now. In some of these, the hypogenic evidences are very clear, while others remain in doubt because of the widespread presence of well-developed condensation-corrosion morphologies not necessarily related to hydrothermal fluids. This paper reports the present knowledge of…

Totally dressed SDCI calculations: An application to HF and F2

1995

A previously proposed procedure including the linked and unlinked contributions due to Triple and Quadruple excitations into a size-consistent SDCI-like model has been applied to HF and F2 single-bond systems. The procedure is a non-iterative approximation to the more general total dressing model, which is based on the intermediate Hamiltonians theory. Three basis sets have been employed: the correlation consistent cc-pVTZ basis, a similar one including 3d1f polarization functions, and another including one set of g polarization functions. Excellent agreement with experiment and high-quality calculations is obtained for both equilibrium distances and spectroscopic constants. The possibiliti…

When do different C4 leaf anatomies indicate independent C4 origins? Parallel evolution of C4 leaf types in Camphorosmeae (Chenopodiaceae).

2014

Broad-scale phylogenetic studies give first insights in numbers, relationships, and ages of C 4 lineages. They are, however, generally limited to a model that treats the evolution of the complex C4 syndrome in different lineages as a directly comparable process. Here, we use a resolved and well-sampled phylogenetic tree of Camphorosmeae, based on three chloroplast and one nuclear marker and on leaf anatomical traits to infer a more detailed picture of C4 leaftype evolution in this lineage. Our ancestral character state reconstructions allowed two scenarios: (i) Sedobassia is a derived C3/C4 intermediate, implying two independent gains of C4 in Bassia and Camphorosma; or (ii) Sedobassia is a…

A Comprehensive Survey on Cooperative Relaying and Jamming Strategies for Physical Layer Security

2019

Physical layer security (PLS) has been extensively explored as an alternative to conventional cryptographic schemes for securing wireless links. Many studies have shown that the cooperation between the legitimate nodes of a network can significantly enhance their secret communications performance, relative to the noncooperative case. Motivated by the importance of this class of PLS systems, this paper provides a comprehensive survey of the recent works on cooperative relaying and jamming techniques for securing wireless transmissions against eavesdropping nodes, which attempt to intercept the transmissions. First, it provides a in-depth overview of various secure relaying strategies and sch…

Use of Biocides for the Control of Fungal Outbreaks in Subterranean Environments: The Case of the Lascaux Cave in France

2012

The Lascaux Cave in France suffered an outbreak of the fungus Fusarium solani in 2001. Biocides were applied for three years to control this outbreak. Four months after the initial biocide application, a new outbreak appeared in the form of black stains that progressively invaded the cave. The black stains on the ceiling and passage banks were so evident by 2007 that they became one of the caves major problems. Therefore, biocides were used again in 2008. The present study investigated the fungal communities associated with the black stains and the effectiveness of the biocides applied, by using cloning, denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis, and culture-dependent methods. A novel species…

Postembryonic development of the troglobitic planthopper species Valenciolenda fadaforesta Hoch & Sendra, 2021 (Hemiptera, Fulgoromorpha, Ki…

2022

All nymphal instars of the recently discovered troglobitic planthopper species Valenciolenda fadaforesta Hoch & Sendra, 2021 are described. This represents the first documentation of the complete postembryonic development of any species in the family Kinnaridae. Characters of the external morphology are described and illustrated, and a key to the instars are provided to facilitate discrimination among the different nymphal stages. While V. fadaforesta nymphs share certain synapomorphies with other Fulgoromorpha (except the Tettigometridae), e.g., the cog-wheel structures of the metatrochanters, other characters may be correlated with the subterranean way of life of the species, and thus…

A theoretical study of the electronic spectrum of biphenyl

1995

Abstract The electronic spectrum of biphenyl in the energy range up to 6.0 eV has been studied using multiconfigurational second-order perturbation theory (CASPT2) and a basis set of ANO type, including polarization functions on all carbon atoms. The calculated spectrum gives conclusive assignments to all valence excited singlet states and the low-lying triplet states. The change of the torsional angle between the two benzene rings in the different excited states is shown to be of considerable importance and explains the different excitation energies observed in the gas phase as compared to solution or crystalline biphenyl at low temperatures. The intense transition to the 1 1B1u state is m…
