Experimental results of RC columns strengthnened with Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Mortars

2012

The structural behaviour of reinforced concrete columns strengthened with a system made up of fibre nets embedded in an inorganic stabilized cementitious matrix was investigated. Specimens with circular and square cross-section were cast and subjected to monotonic uniaxial compression to investigate the efficiency of a Polypara-phenylene-benzo-bisthiazole (PBO) Fibre Reinforced Cementitious Mortars (FRCM) system in increasing both carrying capacity and ductility. The experimental results show that confinement with PBO fibre produced a noticeable increment in strength and ductility, though the low mechanical ratios of fibre considered were not always able to ensure hardening behaviour up to …

Theoretical study on travelling web dynamics and instability under non-homogeneous tension

2013

Problems of dynamics and stability of a moving web, travelling between two rollers at a constant velocity, are studied using analytical approaches. Transverse vibrations of the web are described by a partial differential equation that includes the centrifugal force, in-plane tension, elastic reaction and nonstationary inertial terms. The model of a thin elastic plate subjected to bending and non-homogeneous tension is used to describe the bending moment and the distribution of membrane forces. The stability of the plate is investigated with the help of studies of small out-of-plane vibrations. The influence of linearly distributed in-plane tension on the characteristics of the web vibration…

Static instability analysis for travelling membranes and plates interacting with axially moving ideal fluid

2010

The out-of-plane instability of a moving plate, travelling between two rollers with constant velocity, is studied, taking into account the mutual interaction between the buckled plate and the surrounding, axially flowing ideal fluid. Transverse displacement of the buckled plate (assumed cylindrical) is described by an integro-differential equation that includes the centrifugal force, the aerodynamic reaction of the external medium, the vertical projection of membrane tension, and the bending force. The aerodynamic reaction is found analytically as a functional of the displacement. To find the critical divergence velocity of the moving plate and its corresponding buckling mode, an eigenvalue…

A fatal iatrogenic right vertebral injury after transoral odontoidectomy and posterior cervical stabilization for a type II odontoid fracture.

2014

Abstract The authors present a singular case of an iatrogenic right vertebral artery injury, involving a 67 year-old man, who reported a type II odontoid fracture (Anderson and D'Alonzo Classification) and posterior atlantoaxial dislocation following a road traffic accident. A small injury involving the right vertebral artery occurred as a consequence of transoral odontoidectomy and posterior cervical stabilization. It was caused by bone spicules of spinal origin and their presence was confirmed by the histological section of the right vertebral artery at the level of C1–C2. The case confirms how iatrogenic vertebral artery injuries during cervical spine surgery may be potentially lethal, e…

Development of a dielectric spectroscopy technique for the determination of apple (Granny Smith) maturity

2010

Abstract Dielectric measurements of apple were done during its maturity in order to find relations with apple physiological compounds (sugar content, malic acid). An Agilent 85070E open-ended coaxial probe connected to an Agilent E8362B vector network analyzer were used in these experiments. All determinations were made at 30 °C from 500 MHz to 20 GHz. These assays were performed in order to consider the potential use of dielectric spectroscopy for determining the state of fruit maturity. Good correlations among apples Thiault Index with a new defined Dielectric Maturity Index were found. The Dielectric Maturity Index was related to loss factor at two punctual frequencies (0.5 GHz and dipol…

A critical assessment of methods for the determination of the shear stress amplitude in multiaxial fatigue criteria belonging to critical plane class

2015

Abstract Multiaxial high cycle fatigue criteria based on the critical plane approach necessitate unambiguous definitions of the amplitude and mean value of the shear stress (τa and τm) acting on the material planes. Four of the existing definitions relate the values of τa and τm to a geometrical element of the curve described by the tip of the shear stress vector (curve Ψ), respectively, the radius of the Minimum Circumscribed Circle, the Longest Chord, the Longest Projection, the diagonal of the Maximum Rectangular Hull (MRH). In this paper a critical assessment of the above definitions is proposed, focusing on that based on the concept of MRH, which is the most recently developed. The mai…

Cytotoxic secondary metabolites from the endophytic fungus Aspergillus versicolor KU258497

2018

Abstract Two new isocoumarin dimers (1 and 2) and one new dihydroquinolone derivative (3) were isolated from Aspergillus versicolor, an endophyte derived from leaves of the Egyptian water hyacinth Eichhornia crassipes (Pontederiaceae), together with ten other known metabolites. Chemical structures of the isolated metabolites were determined based on HRESIMS, extensive 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy. The relative and absolute configurations of the new natural products were established by ROESY and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectroscopy, respectively. The axial chirality of the isocoumarin 7,7′-homodimers (1 and 2) was deduced by TDDFT-ECD calculations. All isolated compounds were asses…

S_Kernel: A New Symmetry Measure

2005

Symmetry is an important feature in vision. Several detectors or transforms have been proposed. In this paper we concentrate on a measure of symmetry. Given a transform S, the kernel SK of a pattern is defined as the maximal included symmetric sub-set of this pattern. It is easily proven that, in any direction, the optimal axis corresponds to the maximal correlation of a pattern with its flipped version. For the measure we compute a modified difference between respective surfaces of a pattern and its kernel. That founds an efficient algorithm to attention focusing on symmetric patterns.

Graphene nanoribbons subject to gentle bends

2012

Since graphene nanoribbons are thin and flimsy, they need support. Support gives firm ground for applications, and adhesion holds ribbons flat, although not necessarily straight: ribbons with high aspect ratio are prone to bend. The effects of bending on ribbons' electronic properties, however, are unknown. Therefore, this article examines the electromechanics of planar and gently bent graphene nanoribbons. Simulations with density-functional tight-binding and revised periodic boundary conditions show that gentle bends in armchair ribbons can cause significant widening or narrowing of energy gaps. Moreover, in zigzag ribbons sizeable energy gaps can be opened due to axial symmetry breaking,…

Positron Annihilation in Polycrystalline Metals Deformed by Uniaxial Tension

2005

Angular distributions of the positron annihilation quanta were measured for polycrystalline samples deformed by uniaxial tension up to difierent deformation degrees. The S parameter as a function of the W parameter was determined. The data obtained for samples elongated up to difierent elongation degrees indicate that in the proportionality and limited proportionality regions the changes in the physical properties of samples are governed mainly by generation of vacancies and formation and kinetics of transformations of vacancy clusters occurring flrst of all on the grains of monocrystallites. In the region of plastic deformations the dominant defects are dislocations and vacancies and their…
