Construction of Disjoint Virtual Backbones for Wireless Sensor Networks
2020
A wireless sensor network is a wireless network of sensors aimed at monitoring physical events. It has ingratiated itself into almost all areas of human endeavors. Data dissemination in these networks is quite challenging and is generally accomplished by flooding. But flooding introduces broadcast storm problem due from implosion and overlap. To overcome this, topology management can prescribe a virtual backbone network to which routing is confined. In this paper we propose an algorithm that constructs multiple disjoint virtual backbone networks, using only nodes' locations. The disjointedness makes routing more robust and the network exploitation energy efficient. Simulations show our algo…
Computer simulation of bottle-brush polymers with flexible backbone: good solvent versus theta solvent conditions.
2011
By Molecular Dynamics simulation of a coarse-grained bead-spring type model for a cylindrical molecular brush with a backbone chain of $N_b$ effective monomers to which with grafting density $\sigma$ side chains with $N$ effective monomers are tethered, several characteristic length scales are studied for variable solvent quality. Side chain lengths are in the range $5 \le N \le 40$, backbone chain lengths are in the range $50 \le N_b \le 200$, and we perform a comparison to results for the bond fluctuation model on the simple cubic lattice (for which much longer chains are accessible, $N_b \le 1027$, and which corresponds to an athermal, very good, solvent). We obtain linear dimensions of …
Backbone Extraction of Weighted Modular Complex Networks based on their Component Structure
2023
This work introduces a generic backbone extraction framework exploiting the mesoscopic network structure. Indeed, numerous real-world networks are made of dense groups of nodes called communities, multi-core or local components. To deal with these groups' heterogeneity, we propose to extract the backbones independently from their various components and fuse them. Experimental investigations on real-world networks demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach compared to the classical techniques' agnostic of the mesoscopic structure of real-world networks.
Topology Management in wireless sensor networks
2020
Wireless sensor networking is ingratiating itself into almost every area of human endeavors. Its drivers include its usages, improvements in microelectronics and manufacturing techniques. The network is made up of multiple tiny sensor nodes deployed in the area to be sensed, with nodes having processing, communicating, and sensing capabilities that enable them to perform their function collaboratively. Nodes sense events and transmit their data to the sink directly or through intermediate nodes acting as relay.Despite all the tremendous advances that have been made on this technology over the past few years, energy has not kept pace. This is based mostly on the fact that battery is its main…
PESI - a taxonomic backbone for Europe
2015
Reliable taxonomy underpins communication in all of biology, not least nature conservation and sustainable use of ecosystem resources. The flexibility of taxonomic interpretations, however, presents a serious challenge for end-users of taxonomic concepts. Users need standardised and continuously harmonised taxonomic reference systems, as well as highquality and complete taxonomic data sets, but these are generally lacking for nonspecialists. The solution is in dynamic, expertly curated web-based taxonomic tools. The Pan-European Species-directories Infrastructure (PESI) worked to solve this key issue by providing a taxonomic e-infrastructure for Europe. It strengthened the relevant social (…
Filtering Real World Networks: A Correlation Analysis of Statistical Backbone Techniques
2023
Networks are an invaluable tool for representing and understanding complex systems. They offer a wide range of applications, including identifying crucial nodes, uncovering communities, and exploring network formation. However, when dealing with large networks, the computational challenge can be overwhelming. Fortunately, researchers have developed several techniques to address this issue by reducing network size while preserving its fundamental properties [1-9]. To achieve this goal, two main approaches have emerged: structural and statistical methods. Structural methods aim to keep a set of topological features of the network while reducing its size. In contrast, statistical methods elimi…
NetBone: A Python Package for Extracting Backbones of Weighted Networks
2023
NetBone is a new open-source Python package designed to simplify analyzing complex networks. With a wide range of techniques available, Net-Bone allows researchers to extract the backbone of a network while preserving its essential structure. The package includes nine structural methods and five statistical techniques, offering users a comprehensive solution to network analysis. It is user-friendly and straightforward to use, with easy installation. The package accepts different types of inputs, including data frames or Networkx graphs, and provides evaluation measures for comparative purposes. Additionally, NetBone offers an option to generate plots. Its versatility makes it a valuable too…
First Annelated Azaphosphole-Ferrocenes: Synthetic Pathways and Structures
2012
The first annelated bis- and mono-3H-1,3-azaphosphole ferrocene sandwich compounds have been synthesized from aminoferrocenes, and their X-ray structures are compared to those of their selenide-protected P═Se analogues, showing net discrepancies both in metallocene backbone conformation and in fused-ring planarity.
Streaming for vehicular users via elastic proxy buffer management
2004
In this article we refer to the market of vehicular networks, where groups of customers located in the same public vehicle (e.g., a train or bus) connect to a terrestrial network through a wireless/satellite backbone link. Elastic buffering is a proxy management technique devised to decouple the multimedia information retrieval rate on the network backbone from the playout streaming rate at the user terminal. It has been shown in the past that the application of elastic buffering mechanisms in terrestrial networks brings significant advantages in terms of network effectiveness. We show that elastic buffering is an extremely effective means to reduce, or even eliminate, streaming service out…
