Comparison of Delivery Methods in Phage Therapy against Flavobacterium columnare Infections in Rainbow Trout

2021

This dataset consists of three phage therapy experiments to prevent Flavobacterium columnare infections in rainbow trout. Experiments I and II were done in stagnant water, and Experiment III in a flow-through system. See the documentation file attached with the dataset for full description of the methods (also found in the original article).

Bacteriophage Resistance Affects Flavobacterium columnare Virulence Partly via Mutations in Genes Related to Gliding Motility and Type IX Secretion S…

2020

AbstractIncreasing problems with antibiotic resistance has directed interest towards phages as tools to treat bacterial infections in the aquaculture industry. However, phage resistance evolves rapidly in bacteria posing a challenge for successful phage therapy. To investigate phage resistance in the fish pathogenic bacterium Flavobacterium columnare, two phage-sensitive, virulent wild-type isolates, FCO-F2 and FCO-F9, were exposed to phages and subsequently analyzed for bacterial viability and colony morphology. Twenty-four phage-exposed isolates were further characterized for phage resistance, antibiotic susceptibility, motility, adhesion and biofilm formation on polystyrene surface, prot…

New Tools for Streamlined In Vivo Homing Peptide Identification

2021

In vivo peptide-phage display is an unbiased technique for mapping of the vascular diversity and identification of homing peptides. This chapter is intended to serve as a structured practical guide to execute in vivo T7 phage biopanning and data analysis experiments. We discuss experimental designs and protocols with emphasis on application of high-throughput sequencing-based technologies for streamlined in vivo biopanning and validation of homing peptides.

Bakteriofagi: nova paradigma ta perevagi  pered antibiotikami u likuval'no-profilakticnih  ŝljah

2017

Comparative analysis of antibiotics and bacteriophages preparations properties. Substantiation of prospects of using bacteriophages in medical purposes. Methods: systematic analysis, analytical, monographic, synthesis, formalization, abstract and logical. Many years of antibiotics use for the treatment of various diseases has led to the emergence of multidrug-resistant bacterial strains. According to WHO, more than 60% of pathogens are resistant to major antibiotics, and in 10-20 years almost all will acquire antimicrobial resistance. The reasons for the rapid adaptation of microorganisms to antibiotics may include continual, unreasonable using of antibiotics for self-medication, and when t…

Targeting antibiotic resistant bacteria with phages reduces bacterial density in an insect host

2018

Phage therapy is attracting growing interest among clinicians as antibiotic resistance continues becoming harder to control. However, clinical trials and animal model studies on bacteriophage treatment are still scarce and results on the efficacy vary. Recent research suggests that using traditional antimicrobials in concert with phage could have desirable synergistic effects that hinder the evolution of resistance. Here, we present a novel insect gut model to study phage-antibiotic interaction in a system where antibiotic resistance initially exists in very low frequency and phage specifically targets the resistance bearing cells. We demonstrate that while phage therapy could not reduce th…

Small things matter : of phages and antibiotic resistance conferring plasmids

2016

Viruses and plasmids are small units of genetic material dependent on cells either transiently or continuously. Intriguingly, stories of these small entities intertwine in antibiotic resistance crisis. Horizontal gene transfer enables bacteria to respond rapidly to chances in their environment. Anthropogenic consumption of antibiotics induces the travel of resistance encoding genes mainly as passengers of conjugative plasmids. In this thesis, I demonstrate that clinically important resistance plasmids could evolutionarily rescue susceptible bacteria under lethal antibiotic concentrations. If mobile resistance genes are available in surrounding community, administration of high doses of anti…
