Mg2-xTixNi (x=0, 0.5) alloys prepared by mechanical alloying for electrochemical hydrogen storage: Experiments and first-principles calculations

2012

International audience; Mg2-xTixNi (x = 0, 0.5) electrode alloys have been prepared by mechanical alloying (MA) under argon atmosphere at room temperature using a planetary high-energy ball mill. The microstructures of synthesized alloys are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The effects of substitutional doping of Ti in Mg2Ni phase have been investigated by first-principles density functional theory calculations. XRD analysis results indicate that Ti substitution for Mg in Mg2Ni-type alloys results in the formation of TiNi (Pm-3m) and TiNi3 intermetallics. With the increase of milling time, the TiNi phase…

Mechanical activation effect on the self-sustaining combustion reaction in the Mo–Si system

2001

Abstract Nanostructured molybdenum disilicide (MoSi2) was synthesized using an alternative route called MASHS (mechanically activated self-propagating high-temperature synthesis). This original process combines a short duration ball milling (MA) with a self-sustaining combustion (SHS). These two steps were investigated. The microstructure evolution of the powder mixture during mechanical activation was monitored using XRD profile analysis and TEM investigations. Short duration ball milling of (Mo+2Si) powder produces Mo and Si nanocrystallites into micrometric particles. It was demonstrated that pure α-MoSi2 with nanometric structure (DMoSi2=88 nm) could be produced via a very fast combusti…

Synthesis and characterization of nanocrystalline LaNi5 hydrogen storage materials

2009

With the growing environmental concerns of greenhouse gas emissions from the burning of fossil fuels, it is becoming increasingly important to switch to cleaner alternative fuels such as hydrogen [1]. Inter-metallic LaNi5 is one of the most widely used and studied solid-state hydrogen storage material – a pet material for the prototype systems using hydrogen fuel. However, nanostructuring effects on this systems are not yet fully explored. Recently we have carried out systematic studies regarding the effect of nanostructuring on the hydrogen sorption properties of this material [2]. Unlike some other potential hydrogen storage materials, which shows faster kinetics upon nanostructuring, the…

A facile way to synthesize noble metal free TiO2 based catalysts for glycerol photoreforming

2023

In this work anaerobic heterogeneous photocatalytic solar/UV light reforming of glycerol in aqueous media was performed with Pt-photodeposition and noble metal free modified TiO2 photocatalysts prepared through ball milling, a very simple and cheap coupled catalyst preparation method. Different amounts of Cu2O or 3% CuO were loaded on TiO2 using ball milling and during each run glycerol conversion, hydrogen and CO2 formed in the gas phase and 1,3-dihydroxyacetone (DHA) and glyceraldehyde (GA) in the liquid phase were determined. The results were compared with the aim to verify the effectiveness of Cu2O in replacing Pt. Using noble metal free photocatalysts, 33% glycerol conversion, 10.3% an…

Solvent-free ball-milling subcomponent synthesis of metallosupramolecular complexes.

2015

Subcomponent self-assembly from components A, B, C, D, and Fe(2+) under solvent-free conditions by self-sorting leads to the construction of three structurally different metallosupramolecular iron(II) complexes. Under carefully selected ball-milling conditions, tetranuclear [Fe4 (AD2 )6 ](4-) 22-component cage 1, dinuclear [Fe2 (BD2 )3 ](2-) 11-component helicate 2, and 5-component mononuclear [Fe(CD3 )](2+) complex 3 were prepared simultaneously in a one-pot reaction from 38 components. Through subcomponent substitution reaction by adding subcomponent B, the [Fe4 (AD2 )6 ](4-) cage converts quantitatively to the [Fe2 (BD2 )3 ](2-) helicate, which, in turn, upon addition of subcomponent C, …

2,3-Dihydro-1,2,6-thiadiazine 1-Oxides by Biginelli-Type Reactions with Sulfonimidamides under Mechanochemical Conditions.

2021

Biginelli-type multicomponent reactions (MCRs) with NH-free sulfonimidamides provide 2,3-dihydro-1,2,6-thiadiazine 1-oxides in high yields. The couplings are performed in a planetary ball mill under solvent-free mechanochemical conditions. Acetic acid or ytterbium triflate are used as catalysts. A representative product was characterized by X-ray single crystal structure analysis revealing molecular details of the highly functionalized three-dimensional heterocycle. Further product modifications lead to additional structural scaffolds.

Combustion wave structure during the MoSi2 synthesis by Mechanically-Activated Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis (MASHS): In situ time-reso…

2006

Abstract In situ synchrotron time-resolved X-ray diffraction experiments coupled with an infrared imaging camera have been used to reveal the combustion wave structure during the production of MoSi2 by Mechanically Activated Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis (MASHS). The fast combustion front exhibits a form described as an ‘equilibrium structure’ where the chemical reaction is the sole major driving force. In the MASHS process, oxide-free interfaces between Mo and Si nanocrystallites enhance the reaction Mo+2Si→MoSi2. Exhaustive time-resolved investigations show a possible solid-state process in the first second of the reaction within the combustion front. If preheating is added,…
