Oral manifestations of Diabetes Mellitus. A systematic review

2017

Background: Diabetes Mellitus has become a global epidemic and presents many complications, usually proportional to the degree and duration of hyperglycemia. The aim of this systematic review was to investigate the different oral manifestations associated with Diabetes Mellitus. Material and Methods: A MEDLINE search for “Diabetes Mellitus and oral manifestations” was performed. A further search was conducted for “diabetes” and its individual oral manifestation. Inclusion criteria were as follows: human clinical studies with a minimum of 30 patients; studies published in relevant scientific journals between January 1998 and January 2016. Nineteen studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria and…

Paediatric Sleep Questionnaire for Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Syndrome Screening: Is Sleep Quality Worthy of Note?

2021

Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) is the most severe condition on the spectrum of sleep-related breathing disorders (SRBDs). The Paediatric Sleep Questionnaire (PSQ) is one of the most used and validated screening tools, but it lacks the comprehensive assessment of some determinants of OSAS, specifically anamnestic assessment and sleep quality. This study aims to assess the accuracy of some specific items added to the original PSQ, particularly related to the patient’s anamnestic history and to the quality of sleep, for the screening of OSAS in a paediatric population living in Sicily (Italy). Fifteen specific items, divided into “anamnestic” and “related to sleep quality” were added…

Personality and fatigue perception in a sample of IBD outpatients in remission: a preliminary study.

2012

International audience; BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Fatigue is considered as a feature of IBD. Nevertheless, medical variables would partly explain this complex phenomenon. Psychological variables would be especially connected to fatigue for patients in remission. Moreover, personality is known to be linked to the fatigue of patients with CFS. This preliminary study aimed to determine if personality dimensions are linked to the perception of fatigue in IBD. METHODS: 81 IBD outpatients in remission completed the MFI (fatigue); ISI, EES (sleep disturbances); TCI-R (personality); HADS (depression and anxiety). Medical data were collected (ferritin, C-reactive protein, number of flare-ups, number of h…

Comparison of Methods and Kits for Colorimetric Determination of Residual Chlorine in Water

1997

Abstract The use of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) for residual chlorine determination in water offers 2 possibilities, one at pH 1-2 and absorbance measurement at 450 nm and another at pH 3.8-5.8 and measurement at 650 nm. The reaction of chlorine with TMB reaches its maximum sensitivity at pH 1-2. The detection limit is 2 ng/mL. A calibrated scale for colorimetric determination of residual chlorine in water with 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB), prepared with tropaeolin O (C.I. 14270), is described. This scale is stable for several months and can be useful in replacing the conventional and much less stable scale prepared from standard solutions of oxochlorate (I). Kits for deter…

Defect formation in photochromic Ca2SnO4: Al3+

2021

Abstract Photoluminescence, photochromism and defect formation were analysed in Ca2SnO4 doped with 0–20% Al3+. Bright cyan luminescence attributed to Sn2+ was detected in all samples. Introduction of Al3+ in Ca2SnO4 led to an enhancement of Sn2+ emission by up to 70% in comparison with an undoped sample. After exposure to UV irradiation, two absorbance bands centered at 520 nm and 710 nm and three paramagnetic defects were observed in Al3+-doped Ca2SnO4 samples. The paramagnetic centers were identified as a hole type and two different Sn3+ centers. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) data suggested that one of the Sn3+ centers is located in a close proximity of Al3+. Analysis of the stabi…

Phylogenetic placement of Triaenophora (formerly Scrophulariaceae) with some implications for the phylogeny of Lamiales

2009

Phylogenetic placement of Triaenophora together with Rehmannia were explored with DNA sequence data from five regions (rbcL, ndhF, rps16, trnL-F, nr ITS) in two combined data matrices. One (rbcL, ndhF, rps16) represented a wide sampling across most families of Lamiales. The other data matrix represented two DNA regions partly unalignable across Lamiales (trnL-F, nr ITS) plus rps16, which proved to be variable enough to give resolution at a smaller taxonomic level in Lamiales. Triaenophora rupestris and Rehmannia are sister taxa, composing a strongly supported clade, which is sister to all representative genera of Orobanchaceae. Furthermore, Paulowniaceae and Phrymaceae are next to Orobancha…

Post-flare evolution of AR 10923 with Hinode/XRT

2010

Flares are dynamic events which involve rapid changes in coronal magnetic topology end energy release. Even if they may be localized phenomena, the magnetic disturbance at their origin may propagate and be effective in a larger part of the active region. We investigate the temporal evolution of a flaring active region with respect to the loops morphology, the temperature, and emission measure distributions. We consider $Hinode/XRT$ data of a the 2006 November 12th C1.1 flare. We inspect the evolution of the morphology of the flaring region also with the aid of TRACE data. XRT filter ratios are used to derive temperature and emission measure maps and evolution. The analyzed flare includes se…
