Lentils enhance probiotic growth in yogurt and provide added benefit of antioxidant protection

2013

Abstract We evaluated the antioxidant potential of lentil polysaccharides in stimulating the growth of probiotic bacteria in yogurt. Microbial counts, pH and total titratable acidity (TTA) were measured in yogurt samples containing starter cultures with or without probiotic bacteria, supplemented with whole ground green lentils. Additionally, the antioxidant potential of polysaccharides extracted from green, red, and dehulled red lentils were measured by oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) assay. Results demonstrate that green lentils selectively enhanced the number of probiotic bacteria in yogurt in the initial stages of storage and maintained overall microbial counts (starter cultur…

Kinetic and Mechanistic Aspects of a Poly(o-toluidine)-Modified Gold Electrode. 1. Simultaneous Cyclic Spectroelectrochemistry and Electrogravimetry …

2012

International audience; Electrodeposited poly(o-toluidine) (POT) on gold electrodes was investigated in a 0.5 M H2SO4 aqueous solution using cyclic electrogravimetry with in situ vis-NIR spectroscopy. This coupling of different techniques allows the electrical, color, and mass changes during the electrochemical reactions of these polymers to be correlated. Therefore, this is a powerful tool to obtain valuable information on the physical models of polymer films and their electrochemical properties. The accurate analysis of the results from these techniques showed the contribution of three different redox transitions (leucoemeraldine-polaron transition, polaron-bipolaron transition, and bipol…

Discontinuous electrokinetic chromatography of parabens using different substituted resonances as pseudostationary phases

1999

Resorcarene derivatives, negatively charged even at moderate pH, were synthesized and employed as pseudostationary phases to achieve mobilities exceeding that of the electroosmotic flow. Under these conditions, a discontinuous electrolyte system was developed which allows the separation of four uncharged homologous 4-hydroxybenzoic esters (parabens) within a zone of resorcarene electrolyte, and the detection of these UV active compounds in a resorcarene-free zone, free from the high UV background absorbance of the resorcarenes. Resorcarenes, with differently charged functionalities (carboxylate and phosphate groups) to provide the electrophoretic mobility and with alkyl residues of differen…

Determination of unsaturation grade and trans isomers generated during thermal oxidation of edible oils and fats by FTIR

1999

Abstract The oxidative deterioration of culinary oils and fats during episodes of heating associated with normal usage (80°C–300°C, 20–40 min) was monitored by FTIR spectroscopy. The thermal oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids during heating was studied by the determination of unsaturation percentage and trans isomers at various temperatures and heating times. Oils frequently used in food frying such as olive oil, sunflower oil, corn oil and seeds oil (sunflower, safflower and canola seed), and lard were studied. The Absorbance Correction Method is proposed to correct the spectral interference and allows the analytic use of signal which would not be initially valid for quantitative ana…

In situ UV-visible spectroelectrochemistry in the course of oxidative monomer electrolysis

2015

Abstract Novel method to characterize the macromolecuar structure of an electroactive polymer deposited via electrooxidation of the corresponding monomer on the electrode surface has been proposed. It is based on experimental determination of the number of electrons spent for oxidation of an initially solute monomer species which is used to calculate the number of covalent bonds linking each monomer unit with neighboring units inside the polymer. The former parameter is found by tracing simultaneously the variations of instantaneous values of the solute monomer concentration and of the passed charge in the course of the monomer oxidation electrolysis. This monomer concentration is establish…

Chemical recycling of polyenaminones by transamination reaction via amino–enaminone polymerisation/depolymerisation

2019

Abstract Novel oligo- and polyenaminones with Mw ∼ 3000 Da were prepared in excellent yields by amino–enaminone ‘click’ polymerisation of 1,3- and 1,4-bis[3-(dimethylamino)acryloyl]arenes with 1,3- and 1,4-phenylenediamine. The obtained oligomers and polymers were depolymerised quantitatively to the starting bis-enaminones and diamines by treatment with excess dimethylamine in ethanol at 50 °C. This simple polymerisation/depolymerisation method allows for a closed-loop recycling of polyenaminone-based materials. UV light absorbance at wavelengths below 470 nm indicates promising optical properties of these polymers.

Durability of a strach-based biodegradable polymer

2007

Abstract The photo-oxidation and the photo-stabilization of a commercial biodegradable polymer have been investigated in order to establish the possibility of using this polymer as raw material for films for agriculture. The degradation has been followed by measuring the mechanical properties as a function of photo-oxidation time and in particular by following the elongation at break. The virgin polymer, made from maize starch and a synthetic biodegradable polyester, shows poor resistance to the UV irradiation as observed by the fast decay of the elongation at break, but the presence of small amounts of conventional UV stabilizers strongly improves the durability of this polymer. The UV sta…

Dynamic evolution of the oscillatory Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction upon addition of a non-ionic polymer

2006

Abstract The dynamic evolution of the oscillatory Belousov–Zhabotinsky reaction upon addition of increasing amount of the non-ionic polymer polypropylene glycol with molecular weight 425 g mol−1 (PPG-425) was investigated in a stirred-batch reactor by monitoring the Ce(IV) absorbance changes. The oscillatory parameters are significantly altered by the presence of the polymer. The findings obtained in the present work revealed that the PPG-425 is not only more effective, than other polymer previously [R. Lombardo, C. Sbriziolo, M.L. Turco Liveri, K. Pelle, M. Wittmann, Z. Noszticzius, in: J.A. Pojman, Q. Tran-Cong-Miyata (Eds.), Nonlinear Dynamics in Polymeric Systems, American Chemical Soci…

Determination of albendazole and ivermectin residues in cattle and poultry-derived samples from India by micellar liquid chromatography

2021

We have developed a method, based on micellar liquid chromatography, to determine albendazole and ivermectin in dairy products and biological waste from bovine, as well as edible tissues from poultry. Anthelmitics were resolved in less than 10 min using a C18 column and a mobile phase of 0.15 mol/L sodium dodecyl sulfate – 6% 1-pentanol at buffered at pH 7 with a 0.01 M phosphate salt, running under isocratic mode at 1 mL/min. Detection was by absorbance at 292 nm. Method was successfully validated following official validation guidelines, in terms of: selectivity, sensitivity, calibration range (0.0125−0.5 mg/kg to 25−50 mg/kg), linearity (r2 > 9990), trueness (86.3–105.6%), precision (<12…

FT-IR spectroscopic investigation of bacterial cell envelopes from Zymomonas mobilis which have different surface hydrophobicities

2013

Abstract Changes in the cell envelope composition of bacteria Zymomonas mobilis 113S which resulted in varied cell surface hydrophobicity (CSH) were examined using FT-IR-spectroscopy and conventional methods of biochemical analysis. Significant differences in all analyses were detected between hydrophilic and hydrophobic compounds in the envelopes of Z. mobilis . A significant positive linear relationship ( P Z. mobilis and the ratio of absorbance band intensities assigned to the CH 2 and CH 3 vibrations from lipids as well as the asymmetric and symmetric stretching vibrations of these methylene and methyl groups. Differences were also seen between the ratio of band absorbances arising from…
