Primary school text comprehension predicts mathematical word problem-solving skills in secondary school
2014
This longitudinal study aimed to investigate the extent to which primary school text comprehension predicts mathematical word problem-solving skills in secondary school among Finnish students. The participants were 224 fourth graders (9–10 years old at the baseline). The children’s text-reading fluency, text comprehension and basic calculation ability were tested in grade four. In grade seven and nine, their skills in solving mathematical word problems were assessed. Overall, the results showed that text comprehension in grade four of primary school predicts math word problem-solving skills in secondary school, after controlling for text-reading fluency and basic calculation ability. Among …
Perspectivas psicológicas seleccionadas sobre trabajo digno y satisfacción laboral
2020
This article analyses some selected considerations on the individual psychological variables that determine the perception of work as worthy or satisfactory. It is argued that the eudemonist philosophy of life (Huta and Ryan), basic self-assessments (Judge and Bono), and satisfaction of basic psychological needs (Ryan and Deci) are interrelated as causes of job satisfaction. A two-level model of determinants of job satisfaction is presented and analysed, which relates the theories mentioned above. Walczak's empirical articles confirming these relationships are presented and reviewed.

Anchoring Belonging Through Material Practices in Participatory Arts-Based Research
2020
How do people understand belonging and what kinds of stances toward belonging do they take? What kind of knowledge or ways of knowing (EISNER, 2008) does artistic practice yield about belonging? We ask these questions in this article, which is based on the research project Crossing Borders, in which we used participatory arts-based methods to study belonging. We invited participants to explore the notion of belonging in three parallel workshops drawing on different art forms, film, writing and visual arts. The goal of the workshops was for each participant to produce an artwork that deals with belonging. In the article, we identify four stances that the participants expressed toward the con…

Processing of metals and metalloids by actinobacteria: Cell resistance mechanisms and synthesis of metal(loid)-based nanostructures
2020
Metal(loid)s have a dual biological role as micronutrients and stress agents. A few geochemical and natural processes can cause their release in the environment, although most metal-contaminated sites derive from anthropogenic activities. Actinobacteria include high GC bacteria that inhabit a wide range of terrestrial and aquatic ecological niches, where they play essential roles in recycling or transforming organic and inorganic substances. The metal(loid) tolerance and/or resistance of several members of this phylum rely on mechanisms such as biosorption and extracellular sequestration by siderophores and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), bioaccumulation, biotransformation, and me…
A new species of Crepidostomum (Allocreadiidae: Digenea) from northeastern Finland, with comments on its possible origin
1988
Crepidostomum wikgreni n. sp. is described from the gall-bladder and intestine of the whitefish Coregonus acronius in Lake Yli-Kitka in NE Finland. It is morphologically similar to Crepidostomum farionis, with which it occurs sympatrically and sometimes concurrently; but it differs in that the eggs are much larger, i.e. 96±6.5 μm mean-length, as opposed to 71±4.7 μm mean-length for C. farionis in the same host and locality. It is suggested that the new species has arisen from C. farionis after deglaciation and since c. 8,400 BP, at which time the waters of the Lake Kitka System were isolated from those in the rest of Finland and flowed eastwards into the White Sea Basin. The isolation of th…
Fragmentary remains of Odontocetes (Cetacea, Mammalia) from the Miocene of the Lower Tagus Basin (Portugal)
2021
This first systematic account of the scarcely studied Miocene cetaceans from Portugal describes 17 previously unpublished odontocete specimens from the Lower Tagus Basin. In spite of their fragmentary nature, at least a familial assignment was accomplished for most, and some were even tentatively ascribed to known genera: the Physeteridae are represented only by isolated teeth of “ Scaldicetus ” type; the Platanistidae by a tympanic not definitely assigned to a particular genus; the Eurhinodelphinidae by a lumbar vertebra and an atlas, both only tentatively referred to this family; and the Kentriodontidae comprise the most diversified forms, including rostral and mandibular fragments of a k…
Leptocorticium gloeocystidiatum sp. nov. (Basidiomycota), a new corticioid fungus from Sicily, Italy
2014
A new corticioid species, Leptocorticium gloeocystidiatum is described from Sicily, Italy. It is characterized by a resupinate, buff-coloured basidiome and microscopically by the presence of filiform leptocystidia, gloeocystidia, dendrohyphidia, and small ellipsoid, smooth basidiospores, non-reacting in Melzer's reagent. The species is compared with closest relatives. A key to the accepted species of Leptocorticium is provided.
Lectotypification of the Linnaean name Dianthus virgineus (Caryophyllaceae) and its taxonomic consequences
2021
A lectotype is designated for the name Dianthus virgineus. The relationships between D. virgineus, D. caryophyllus var. caryophyllus, and D. caryophyllus var. inodorus are analyzed. Dianthus virgineus is the oldest available name that applies to a species complex that is often referred to as D. sylvestris or a broad circumscription of the cultivated ornamental D. caryophyllus. The taxonomic consequences are discussed, and the need for further studies is highlighted.
