Noise and radiation damage in silicon photomultipliers exposed to electromagnetic and hadronic radiation

2009

For the electron arm tracking system in the KAOS spectrometer at the Mainz Microtron MAMI a detector based on 2 m long scintillating fibres read out by silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) is planned. Because of the detector's close proximity to the intense electron beam a study of noise and radiation damage in SiPM has been performed. A sample of devices was exposed directly to a 14 MeV electron beam and to a mixed radiation field in the experimental area. First noticeable effects are a large increase in the dark count rate and a severe loss of the gain uniformity.

Plastic Scintillation Detectors for Time-of-Flight Mass Measurements

2020

Fast timing detectors are an essential element in the experimental setup for time-of-flight (ToF) mass measurements of unstable nuclei. We have upgraded the scintillator detectors used in experiments at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) by increasing the number of photomultiplier tubes that read out their light signals to four per detector, and characterized them in a test experiment with $^{48}$Ca beam at the NSCL. The new detectors achieved a time resolution ($\sigma$) of 7.5 ps. We systematically investigated different factors that affect their timing performance. In addition, we evaluated the ability of positioning the hitting points on the scintillator using the …

In-beam tests of scintillating fibre detectors at MAMI and at GSI

2008

The performance of scintillating fibre detectors was studied with electrons at the spectrometer facility of the Mainz microtron MAMI, as well as in a C-12 beam of 2 AGeV energy and in a beam of different particle species at GSI. Multi-anode photomultipliers were used to read out one or more bundles of 128 fibres each in different geometries. For electrons a time resolution of FWHM = 1 ns was measured in a single detector plane with a detection efficiency epsilon > 99%. A time resolution of 310 ps (FWHM) between two planes of fibres was achieved for carbon ions, leading to a FWHM = 220 ps for a single detector. The hit position residual was measured with a width of FWHM = 0.27 mm. The var…

A charge reconstruction algorithm for DAMPE silicon microstrip detectors

2019

Abstract The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) can detect electrons and photons from 5 GeV to 10 TeV and charged nuclei from a few tens of GeV to 100 TeV. The silicon–tungstentracker (STK), which is composed of 768 singled-sided silicon microstrip detectors, is one of four subdetectors in DAMPE providing photon conversion , track reconstruction, and charge identification for relativistic charged particles. This paper focuses on the charge identification performance of the STK detector. The charge response depends mainly on the incident angle and the impact position of the incoming particle. To improve the charge resolution, a reconstruction algorithm to correct for these parameters was …

Channeling experiments with sub-GeV electrons in flat silicon single crystals

2015

Abstract Various planar channeling experiments, performed at the Mainz Microtron MAMI with electrons at silicon single crystals, have been reanalyzed. Two types of signals have been employed. The low energy loss signal originates from emission of channeling radiation in the energy domain between 0.4 and 9 MeV while the high energy loss signal from electrons which have lost about 50% of their primary energy by emission of bremsstrahlung photons. The (1 1 0) planar channeling data, taken at a beam energy of 855 MeV with the former signal, can well be described on the basis of the solution of the classical Fokker–Planck equation. The measurements with the latter signal at beam energies between…

Discrimination of LINAC photon and sunlight contributions in watch glass analyzed by means of thermoluminescence

2012

Abstract The research described in this paper shows how to extract from the glow curves of watch glasses exposed to LINAC photons and sunlight a contribution sensitive to LINAC photons dose. As first step, the dependence of the TL signal due to sunlight on the exposure duration was studied and a signal saturation was observed after about 20 weeks. The comparison of TL signals due to solar light and to LINAC photons highlights a partial overlap of the two signals. Here, two different analysis procedures of glow curves (general order kinetics deconvolution and principal components analysis) are reported to point out components which depend differently on LINAC photon radiation dose. For both …

The Collinear Fast Beam laser Spectroscopy (Cfbs) experiment at Triumf

2016

Abstract Laser spectroscopy experiments at radioactive ion beam facilities around the world investigate properties of exotic nuclei for scientific endeavours such as, but not limited to, the investigation of nuclear structure. Advancements in experimental sensitivity and performance are continuously needed in order to extend the reach of nuclei that can be measured. The collinear fast beam laser spectroscopy ( Cfbs ) setup at Triumf , coupled to an out-of-plane radio-frequency quadrupole Paul trap, enables measurements of some of the most fundamental nuclear properties for long-lived ground and isomeric states. The first comprehensive overview of the Cfbs experiment is provided along with d…

Performance of production modules of the Belle II pixel detector in a high-energy particle beam

2021

The Belle II experiment at the Super B factory SuperKEKB, an asymmetric $e^+e^-$ collider located in Tsukuba, Japan, is tailored to perform precision B physics measurements. The centre of mass energy of the collisions is equal to the rest mass of the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance of $m_{\Upsilon(4S)} = 10.58\,\rm GeV$. A high vertex resolution is essential for measuring the decay vertices of B mesons. Typical momenta of the decay products are ranging from a few tens of MeV to a few GeV and multiple scattering has a significant impact on the vertex resolution. The VerteX Detector (VXD) for Belle II is therefore designed to have as little material as possible inside the acceptance region. Especial…

Particle Identification with DIRCs at PANDA

2019

The DIRC technology (Detection of Internally Reflected Cherenkov light) offers an excellent possibility to minimize the form factor of Cherenkov detectors in hermetic high energy detectors. The PANDA experiment at FAIR in Germany will combine a barrel-shaped DIRC with a disc-shaped DIRC to cover an angular range of 5 to 140 degrees. Particle identification for pions and kaons with a separation power of 3 standard deviations or more will be provided for momenta between 0.5 GeV/c and 3.5 GeV/c in the barrel region and up to 4 GeV/c in the forward region. Even though the concept is simple, the design and construction of a DIRC is challenging. High precision optics and mechanics are required to…

Novel optical interferometry of synchrotron radiation for absolute electron beam energy measurements

2018

Abstract A novel interferometric method is presented for the measurement of the absolute energy of electron beams. In the year 2016, a pioneering experiment was performed using a 195 MeV beam of the Mainz Microtron (MAMI). The experimental setup consisted of two collinear magnetic undulators as sources of coherent optical synchrotron light and a high-resolving grating monochromator. Beam energy measurements required the variation of the relative undulator distance in the decimeter range and the analysis of the intensity oscillation length in the interference spectrum. A statistical precision of 1 keV was achieved in 1 h of data taking, while systematic uncertainties of 700 keV were present …
