Optical multichannel sensing of skin blood pulsations
2004
Time resolved detection and analysis of the skin back-scattered optical signals (reflection photoplethysmography or PPG) provide information on skin blood volume pulsations and can serve for cardiovascular assessment. The multi-channel PPG concept has been developed and clinically verified in this study. Portable two- and four-channel PPG monitoring devices have been designed for real-time data acquisition and processing. The multi-channel devices were successfully applied for cardiovascular fitness tests and for early detection of arterial occlusions in extremities. The optically measured heartbeat pulse wave propagation made possible to estimate relative arterial resistances for numerous …

Background Disembodiment is a core feature of depersonalization disorder (DPD). Given the narratives of DPD patients about their disembodiment and emotional numbing and neurobiological findings of an inhibition of insular activity, DPD may be considered as a mental disorder with specific impairments of interoceptive awareness and body perception. Methods We investigated cardioceptive accuracy (CA) of DPD patients (n = 24) as compared to healthy controls (n = 26) with two different heartbeat detection tasks (“Schandry heartbeat counting task” and “Whitehead heartbeat discrimination task”). Self-rated clearness of body perception was measured by questionnaire. Results Contrary to our hypothes…
Femtosecond coherent anti-Stokes Raman-scattering polarization beat spectroscopy of I2–Xe complex in solid krypton
2006
Time-resolved coherent anti-Stokes Raman-scattering (CARS) measurements are carried out to study the interaction between xenon atom and iodine molecule in a solid krypton matrix. Interference between the CARS polarizations of the "free" and complexed iodine molecules is observed, while the quantum beats of the complex are not detected due to low concentration. Vibrational analysis based on the polarization beats yields accurate molecular constants for the I2-Xe complex. The harmonic frequency of the I2-Xe complex is found to be redshifted by 0.90 cm-1 when compared to the free I2, whereas the anharmonicity is approximately the same. The dephasing rate of the complex is found to be somewhat …

Modeling Drug Effects on Personalized 3D Models of the Heart: A Simulation Study
2010
[EN] The use of anti-arrhythmic drugs is common to treat heart rhythm disorders. Computational modeling and simulation are powerful tools that can be used to investigate the effects of specific drugs on cardiac electrophysiology. In this work a patient-specific anatomical heart model is built to study the effects of dofetilide, a drug that affects IKr current in cardiac cells. We study the multi-scale effects of the drug, from cellular to organ level, by simulating electrical propagation on tissue coupled cellular ion kinetics for several heart beats. Different cell populations configurations namely endocardial, midmyocardial and epicardial are used to test the effect of tissue heterogeneit…
Patterns of Reversal in the Heart of Ciona Intestinalis L.
1969
The reversal of the heart beat is not exclusive to tunicates, for Marcello Malpighi in 1660 described periodic reversal in Bombyx mori and in some Orthoptera. In 1821 Kuhl and van Hasselt reported the phenomenon in Ciona intestinalis L. We have observed reversal in many active pulsating blood vessels, both in vertebrates and in invertebrates, and even in embryonic heart tubes. Using four or five suction electrodes simultaneously, we were able to record electrical activity from multiple sites. Normally, the contraction wave originates from a localized site at one end of the tube and then traverses the whole length of the heart. When a wave of excitation does not propagate the full length, th…
An Adaptive Robust Predictive Current Control for Three-Phase Grid-Connected Inverters
2011
This paper presents an adaptive robust predictive current control (RPCC) for grid-connected three-phase inverters that exhibit zero steady-state current error. The error correction is achieved by means of an adaptive strategy that works in parallel with the deadbeat algorithm, therefore preserving the typical fast response of the predictive law. The resulting control adapts to any particular L or LCL filter by estimation of the resistive part of the filter. As a variety of the RPCC class of control, it offers the best tradeoff between robustness and speed. © 2009 IEEE.

Nonrecursive multiple shock formation via four-wave mixing: theory and experiment
2002
We show theoretically and experimentally that a beat signal propagating along a normally dispersive fiber can trigger the formation of multiple shocks. This phenomenon critically depends on the input frequency separation and power of the beat signal.
