Condition-dependent effects of corticosterone on a carotenoid-based begging signal in house sparrows

2008

International audience; Begging is a complex display involving a variety of different visual and auditory signals. Parents are thought to use these signals to adjust their investment in food provisioning. The mechanisms that ensure the honesty of begging displays as indicators of need have been recently investigated. It has been shown that levels of corticosterone (Cort), the hormone released during the stress response, increase during food shortage and are associated with an increased begging rate. In a recent study in house sparrows, although exogenous Cort increased begging rate, parents did not accordingly adjust their provisioning rate. Here, we tested the hypothesis that Cort might af…

No need to shout: Effect of signal loudness on sibling communication in barn owlsTyto alba

2017

In animal communication, signal loudness is often ignored and seldom measured. We used a playback experiment to examine the role of vocal loudness (i.e., sound pressure level) in sibling to sibling communication of nestling barn owls Tyto alba. In this species, siblings vocally negotiate among each other for priority access to parental food resources. Call rate and call duration play key roles in this vocal communication system, with the most vocal nestlings deterring their siblings from competing for access to the food item next delivered by parents. Here, we broadcast calls at different loudness levels and call rate to live nestlings. The loudness of playback calls did not affect owlets' …

How Do Infanticidal Male Bank Voles (Myodes glareolus) Find the Nest with Pups?

2016

Infanticide, the killing of conspecific young, occurs in most mammal species, like in our study species, the bank vole (Myodes glareolus). Infanticide by adult males is regarded as a strong factor affecting recruitment of young into population. It is considered as an adaptive behaviour, which may increase male fitness via resource gain or an increased access to mates. When an intruder is approaching the nest, the mother should not be present, as her nest guarding is very aggressive and successful. Pups use ultrasonic vocalisation to call their mother when mother leaves nest for foraging but it is not know which cues do infanticidal males use to find the nest with vulnerable pups to commit i…

Begging calls support offspring individual identity and recognition by zebra finch parents.

2009

Abstract In colonial birds, the recognition between parents and their offspring is essential to ensure the exclusivity of parental care. Although individual vocal recognition seems to be a key component of parent-chicks recognition, few studies assessed the period when the emergence of the vocal signature takes place. The present study investigated the acoustic cues of signaler identity carried in the begging calls at three stages of development in zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata castanotis), a colonial species which experiences food-dependence after fledging. Testing parents with playback of begging calls recorded the day before fledging, we found that the offspring recognition was base…

Il destino nelle parole. Questue, mascheramenti e formule augurali

2016

Victims or Aggresors? Framing Romanian Migrants and Crime in Two British Newspapers

2018

The research question at which the present article attempts to answer is: What are the British journalistic procedures used in representing migration and crime in the specific case of Romanian migrants? The article uses quantitative content analysis as the main method of research. The sample of texts was made up of 117 articles published in two (tabloid) British newspapers (the Daily Mail and the Daily Mirror) in the time-period January 1–December 21, 2015. The violent acts of Romanian migrants that were covered by the UK press were extremely diverse. They ranged from robbery, murder and begging to prostitution and medical malpractice. At the same time, Romanian migrants were portrayed not …

Povertà e vita. Mendicità e filosofia nel mondo greco

2015

2010

On March 4, 1848, thanks to the decisive impetus given by Victor Schoelcher, the principle of the abolition of slavery was proclaimed by decree and a « Commission for the preparation of an act of immediate emancipation in all the colonies of the Republic » was established. Like the commission de Broglie under the July Monarchy, the commission, chaired by Schoelcher, provided a huge work of documentation, information and reflection on the settlements, studying also the organization of the English colonies. However, unlike the previous one, the commission of 1848 required the immediate abolition of slavery (Decree of April 27, 1848), without waiting for the election of the National Assembly, …

Questua, sacrificio e banchetto rituale nelle feste campestri della Sardegna

2019

The begging of money, food and livestock, the sacrifice of the latter a…

Sudden Complex Hallucinations in a 14-Year-Old Girl: Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders Versus Dissociative Disorders-The Influence of Early Life Exper…

2020

A 14-year-old girl is taken to the pediatric emergency department (ED) by her parents because of sudden complex hallucinations. She shows moderate intellectual disability without a peculiar phenotype already evaluated by neuropediatrics (normal comparative genomic hybridization array and brain magnetic resonance imaging) and most likely related to affective deprivation at the orphanage. Adopted at 20 months from China, her parents reported that on arrival she had scars, allegedly from being tied to a chair for a long time, and that although she was able to stand, she could not walk. At 22 months, she had experienced several episodes of loss of consciousness with rigidity that were attributed…
