MOHSEN EMADI – A POET OF EXILE

2019

"I’m from exile”. This is how a poet, a cosmopolitan, and a citizen of the world of poetry Mohsen Emadi describes himself. He writes poems on loss and displacement, charting his experiences of mobility. This essay is based on Emadi’s poems and biographical interviews with the poet. Quotes from the interviews and fragments of his poems are combined with theoretical reflections on diaspora, nomadism, and exile by researchers such as Edward Said and Rogers Brubaker. Following Emadi, I take a critical look at the concept of diaspora and discuss mobility and exile both as a forced condition and as a choice. The experiences of both voluntary and coerced mobility are considered from the perspecti…

Rekonstruktion von Identität in oberschlesischen Sprachbiographien

2021

This article is based on language biographies acquired as part of the Polish-German LangGener project. Based on the assumption that biographical research may turn out to be cognitively interesting when analyzing identity and attitude towards the language, the purpose of the article is to reconstruct the identity of German-born Upper Silesians, whose identity, as a result of shifting borders after World War II and changing the prevailing language, is not static and whose language biographies are marked by the experience of a lack of continuity and cracks. The concept of the (re)construction of identity seems to be adequate here, because during the interviews the interlocutors were never aske…

Sequestrati dalla vendetta: “rimanere chiusi fuori dall’oggetto”

2013

Intersections of Mobility and Belonging : Blogging Subjectivities of Finns on the Move

2019

Abstract As components of the contemporary experience, mobility and displacement (Appadurai 1990; Said 2002) are accompanied by our need to belong: while global mobility is encouraged by and expected from the educated ex-pats and temporary workers, the “flows” of migrants cause “debates, challenges, and crises” in the European nation-states (Skey 2014). Yet, in the novel interest in digital mobilities, the analysis of personal experiences has been left aside. In this article, the focus is on affective accounts of mobility and belonging. The autobiographical narratives published in the blogosphere are analyzed to shed light on the processes of multi-sited place attachments. The analysis of i…

An In-between Reader : Situatedness and Belonging in Tove Jansson’s Helsinki

2021

Finnish-Swedish artist and writer Tove Jansson (1914–2001), widely known as the author of the Moomin books, was born in Helsinki and resided there for the greater part of her life. The city features as a setting for her adult-oriented fiction – notably, semi-autobiographical fix-up novels Sculptor’s Daughter (1968/2015) and Fair Play (1989/2011). This article adopts a situated approach to literary geography, examining the researcher’s own position as a Helsinki resident and a ‘situated’ reader. Using autoethnography as a method, I analyze how the city and Jansson’s life narrative are co-produced by the writer, her texts, texts about her (such as biographies and press articles) and myself as…

Places of Belonging, Places of Detachment:

2022

This chapter contributes to the ongoing discussion about rural belonging by considering the role of historical consciousness (Rüsen, 2004) in the process of belonging in a place. The chapter suggests that young people’s temporal orientation in relation to local culture and history plays a significant role in their commitment to rural communities. The analysis draws on qualitative longitudinal data from Finnish girls, aged 16–19, from two sparsely populated regions (Central Finland and the Northern Finnish Sámi homeland). The chapter shows how multiple strands of commitment tie rural young people to their local surroundings, where the past is present in the landscape and everyday life in a m…

The Complex Identities of Latvians Abroad: What Shapes a Migrant’s Sense of Belonging?

2019

AbstractBuilding on the data from The Emigrant Communities of Latvia survey, this chapter aims to reveal and describe the complex nature of the sense of geographic and social belonging of those who became emigrants. It will explore the factors affecting the maintenance of their identity and consider transformation processes among migrants. The starting point of this chapter is the assumption that the ‘sense of belonging’ is affected by a variety of different objective and subjective factors, and that identity is multi-faceted. Instead of facing a trade-off between feeling close to the home country or host country, or developing a supranational identity, different combinations of types of a …

The life?course formation of teachers? profession. How emotions affect VET teachers? social identity.

2018

One of the less developed issues in the sociology of education concerns how the social formation of emotions affects teachers? collective identities. In this article we outline the ingredients of a conceptual scheme explaining the emotional dynamics which form teachers? social identities through a life-course perspective. In particular, we show how educational and job experiences related to teachers? social trajectories create emotional dynamics in their identities which undermine the sense of belongingness to their profession. Our methodology was based on biographical ? narrative interviews treated through a Critical Realism prism in order to bring to the fore the causal process through wh…

The relationships between school belonging and students’ motivational, social-emotional, behavioural, and academic outcomes in secondary education: a…

2019

This meta-analytic review examines the relationships between students' sense of school belonging and students' motivational, social-emotional, behavioural, and academic functioning in secondary education. Moreover, it examines to what extent these relationships differ between different student groups (grade level, SES), measurement instruments, and region. The meta-analysis included 82 correlational studies, published in peer-reviewed journals between 2000 and 2018. Results revealed, on average, a small positive correlation with academic achievement, and small to moderate positive correlations with motivational outcomes such as mastery goal orientations; with social-emotional outcomes such …
