Migrant rap in the periphery : performing politics of belonging

Focusing on a YouTube performance by an emergent Finnish Somali rapper and the audience responses it has generated, this paper looks at ways in which rap music engages with the issue of belonging. Drawing on recent theorizations of belonging as a multi-dimensional, contingent and fluid process, along with sociolinguistic work on globalization and superdiversity, Finnish hip hop culture and popular cultural practices in social media, the paper investigates how belonging is performatively and multi-semiotically interrogated in its online context. Revisiting the “The Breakfast Club”: Testing Different Theoretical Models of Belongingness and Acceptance (and Social Self-Representation)

The current work tests different theoretical models of belongingness and acceptance as fundamental needs for human motivation. In the current study, 372 participants were presented with 52 different items measuring five different theoretical models of belongingness (with a total of 32 items) and three different theoretical models of acceptance (with a total of 20 items). In a first step, Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) failed to provide support for these eight theoretical models. Artikkelissa analysoidaan osallisuuden rakenteellisia taloudellisia ehtoja ja esteitä työelämässä. Kiinnostuksemme kohdistuu erityisesti siihen, miten palveluiden kilpailutus ja ulkoistaminen kiristävät työolosuhteita ja rajoittavat osallisuuden mahdollisuuksia. Tarkastelemme siivoojan työtä, jossa kilpailuttamisen mekanismit näkyvät selvästi. Artikkelissa pohditaan lyhytelokuvan roolia taideperustaisessa osallistavassa tutkimushankkeessa Rajojen yli – kuulumisen performansseja ja narratiiveja taiteen keinoin (2017–2021). Tutkijalähtöisessä hankkeessa ihmisiä kutsuttiin pohtimaan kuulumista työpajoissa taiteen tekemisen ja keskustelun kautta. Yksi työpajoista oli videotyöpaja, jossa osallistujien tavoitteena oli tehdä kuulumista käsittelevä lyhytelokuva. Työpajassa valmistui seitsemän elokuvaa, jotka esitettiin julkisessa ensi-illassa ja taidenäyttelyssä, joka koostettiin kaikissa työpajoissa valmistuneista teoksista. This chapter uses the theoretical framework of sense of belonging to explore how eldercare workers from Finnish service housing units for older people describe the use of digital devices and applications in their work and the work practices that relate to their sense of belonging. The study is based on interview data (n = 25) that was collected in 2018 for a study on digitalisation of eldercare. Stepmothers’ constructions and negotiations of belonging

Applying a narrative approach and symbolic interactionist frame of reference, this study examines how Finnish stepmothers in their written narratives construct and negotiate their belonging. Belonging is a relevant concept in this study since it focuses on social interaction and intersubjectivity, and their emotional content. Three types of belonging were identified: (a) restricted belonging, (b) dyadic stepmother–stepchild belonging and (c) the spousal relationship as a focal dyad of belonging.
