Viability RT-qPCR to detect potentially infectious enteric viruses on heat-processed berries

Berries have frequently been cited as causing gastroenteritis and acute hepatitis outbreaks due to enteric virus contamination, including human norovirus and hepatitis A virus (HAV). Model experiments were performed to evaluate the potential use of viability RT-qPCR to assess the thermal inactivation of norovirus genotype I (GI), GII, and HAV on raspberries, blueberries and strawberries. Initially, two viability markers, platinum chloride and propidium monoazide (PMAxx™), were compared using thermally inactivated norovirus GI and GII suspensions. [EN] IoT is a concept referred to a network of common objects interconnected through the Internet. This is one of the main areas with growing interest and also necessary for the Telecommunication and Telematics Engineering students. The main constraints which face the students with IoT are the integration of the hardware as well as the need for management systems to handle the amount of data they generate by specific software. This work shows some experiences done by a group of students in the Telematics Engineering Degree and the Master of Telecommunications.

Impact of vine water status on berry mass and berry tissue development of Cabernet franc (Vitis vinifera L.), assessed at berry level

Background Berry size is considered an important quality factor in red wine production. The objective of this work was to study the effect of vine water status on berry mass in field conditions, with a specific focus on berry tissue masses. Results The study was carried out over 2 years in a plot located in Sicily (Italy). Two irrigation treatments were established. Dynamic evolution of berry mass and berry tissue masses at harvest were recorded. Berries produced under water deficit conditions were smaller and characterized by a higher skin-to-flesh ratio. Como palabras diacríticas o palabras ligadas fraseológicamente se entienden palabras que solo existen dentro de unidades fraseológicas. Se han confeccionado varios listados de estas palabras para el alemán. Sin embargo, análisis de corpus han puesto de manifiesto que no todas esas palabras existen únicamente en unidades fraseológicas sino que también tienen, en mayor o menor medida, uso libre en la lengua. Como consecuencia de análisis de corpus algunas palabras se desplazan a la periferia de la categoría o dejan de pertenecer a ella, mientras otras se añaden. Goji berry has recently been introduced in Mediterranean diet and its consumption is increasing. This study aims to determine cytoprotection of lutein (LUT), zeaxanthin (ZEAX) and goji berry extract (GBE) rich in carotenoids against Beauvericin (BEA)-induced cytotoxicity on SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells. Both carotenoids and GBE showed cytoprotective effects. Cytoprotection was evaluated by simultaneous combination of the two xanthophylls LUT and ZEAX with BEA, as well as using pre-treatment assays. Abstract In this work, the cytotoxicity of Beauvericin (BEA), lutein (LUT), zeaxanthin (ZEAX) and goji berries extract (GBE) rich in carotenoids, was investigated, as well as cytoprotective effects of these carotenoids against BEA induced-cytotoxicity on Caco-2 cells. Cytotoxicity was carried out using MTT and protein content (PC) assays during 24 and 48 h of exposure. Only BEA showed cytotoxic effect obtaining a reduction in cell proliferation range from 6.5 to 92.8%. Simultaneous combination of LUT and ZEAX with BEA slightly increased cell proliferation compared to BEA tested alone. L10 ordered alloys are ideal models for studying the anomalous Hall effect (AHE), which can be used to distinguish the origin from intrinsic (from band structure) or from extrinsic effects (from impurity scatterings). In the bulk limit of L10 ordered FePt films, the AHE is considered to be dominated by the intrinsic contribution, which mainly comes from the strong spin-orbit interaction (SOI) of Pt atoms and exchange-splitting of Fe atoms.
