Huanglongbing modifies quality components and flavonoid content of ‘Valencia’ oranges
2015
BACKGROUND: In order to evaluate the effect of citrus greening disease, or Huanglongbing (HLB), on quality components and flavonoid contents of ‘Valencia’ oranges, fruit from non-infected trees (control), from infected trees but symptom-less (asymptomatic) and from infected trees and showing clear HLB symptoms (symptomatic) were harvested in March and in May, 2013. Fruit peel, pulp and juice were separated, the main quality components were determined, and hesperidin, nobiletin, tangeretin, narirutin and didymin were quantified using liquid chromatography. RESULTS: Peel colour, total soluble solids and citric acid were similar in control and asymptomatic fruits. Symptomatic fruits were small…
Optimization of fermentation parameters with magnetically immobilized Bacillus natto on Ginkgo seeds and evaluation of bioactivity and safety
2018
Abstract In this study, magnetically immobilized Bacillus natto fermentation approach was developed on Ginkgo seeds. Some parameters potentially influencing the fibrinolytic activity of fermented Ginkgo seeds were systematically investigated and optimized by Plackett-Burman and Box-Behnken designs, and the optimum fermentation conditions obtained were 60 mesh particle size, 150 rpm stirring rate, fermentation pH 6.5, 43.0 h fermentation time, 36.4 °C temperature, 16.4 mL/g liquid-solid ratio and 1.0 g/g beads-solid ratio. After fermentation, the satisfactory fibrinolytic activity of Ginkgo seeds was 3175 ± 43 IU/g. The total flavonoid contents were reached to 2.6 ± 0.2 mg rutin equivalent/g…
Antifungal activity and shelf life extension of loaf bread produced with sourdough fermented by Lactobacillus strains
2019
The objective of this study was to evaluate a water‐soluble extract from sourdoughs fermented with the lactic acid bacteria (LAB) for antifungal reflect on loaf bread. The extracts produced by Lactobacillus plantarum CECT 749 and L. bulgaricus CECT 4005 were effective against strains of Fusarium spp., Penicillium spp., and Aspergillus spp., with minimum inhibitory concentration ranging from 1.6 to 200 mg/ml and minimum fungicidal concentration from 1.6 to 400 mg/ml. LC‐ESI‐MS‐TOF was used to analyze the antimicrobial compounds. Several antimicrobial phenolic acids were found. Fermented sourdoughs used for the production of loaf bread produced a reduction of fungal growth in relation on the …
Quality Characteristics of Wholemeal Flour and Bread from Durum Wheat (Triticum turgidum L subsp. durum Desf.) after Field Treatment with Plant Water…
2016
The use of selected plant water extracts to control pests and weeds is gaining growing attention in organic and sustainable agriculture, but the effects that such extracts may exert on the quality aspects of durum wheat are still unexplored. In 2014, 5 plant water extracts (Artemisia arborescens, Euphorbia characias, Rhus coriaria, Thymus vulgaris, Lantana camara) were prepared and distributed on durum wheat cv Valbelice to evaluate their potential herbicidal effects. After crop harvesting, the major physicochemical and technological parameters of wholemeal flours obtained from each treatment were measured and compared with those from chemical weeding and untreated controls. A baking test w…
Modulation of copper deficiency responses by diurnal and circadian rhythms in Arabidopsis thaliana
2015
Highlight Cyclic expression of copper transport and the responses to copper deficiency are integrated into the light and circadian–oscillator signalling in plants.
Soil Solarization and Calcium Cyanamide Affect Plant Vigor, Yield, Nutritional Traits, and Nutraceutical Compounds of Strawberry Grown in a Protected…
2019
Soil solarization is a hydrothermal procedure of disinfesting soil of soilborne diseases and pests. Solarization can be combined with many other chemical or non-chemical alternatives to afford integrated pest and diseases management or improve plant yield. Calcium cyanamide (CaCN2) is a fertilizer used in agriculture sector and is also effective in suppressing soilborne pathogens. The present study assessed the influences of different pre-plant CaCN2 dosages on strawberry grown on solarized or non-solarized soil. Soil solarization and 500 kg ha&minus
The unique inflorescence structure of Dorema aucheri (Apiaceae): An adaptation to the arid environment
2021
Abstract Arid environments demand specific adaptations from plants in vegetative and reproductive systems. Self–compatibility, high pollen production and few well developed fruits are adapted to increase sexual reproductive success. Dorema aucheri is an arid–adapted, perennial monocarpic species endemic to southern Iran. It has a unique inflorescence structure. In this study, significance of inflorescence architecture for reproductive success was investigated in a wild population. The huge yellow inflorescences were frequently visited by manifold insects. The species is andromonoecious and spatially subdivided in a distal part with perfect flowers and a proximal part with male flowers. Flow…
The evolutionary dynamics of adaptive virginity, sex-allocation, and altruistic helping in haplodiploid animals
2017
In haplodiploids, females can produce sons from unfertilized eggs without mating. However, virgin reproduction is usually considered to be a result of a failure to mate, rather than an adaptation. Here, we build an analytical model for evolution of virgin reproduction, sex-allocation, and altruistic female helping in haplodiploid taxa. We show that when mating is costly (e.g., when mating increases predation risk), virginity can evolve as an adaptive female reproductive strategy. Furthermore, adaptive virginity results in strongly divergent sex-ratios in mated and virgin queen nests ("split sex ratios"), which promotes the evolution of altruistic helping by daughters in mated queen nests. H…
Gadoria (Antirrhineae, Plantaginaceae): A new genus, endemic from Sierra de Gádor, Almería, Spain
2017
The surprising discovery of a population of a new species of Antirrhineae (Plantaginaceae) has also given rise to the description of a new genus situated in the subtribe Maurandyinae: Gadoria falukei. This is supported by the characteristics of the flower, pollen grains, seeds and capsule, and phylogenetic results based on DNA sequences. The species is endemic from Sierra de Gádor, Almería, Spain. Scanning electron microscopy was used to explore micromorphology of the capsule, indument, and seed and pollen grains ornamentation. Additionally, chromosomal number, preliminary insights on reproductive biology, phylogenetic position within Antirrhineae, ecological data and conservation status of…
Survival of an Endangered OrchidLiparis loeseliiin Habitats with Different Water Level Fluctuations
2018
Liparis loeselii (L.) Rich. is an endangered orchid species which occurs in wetland habitats. For successful conservation of this orchid it is necessary to recognize its adaptive traits and special habitat requirements. Therefore, we examined morphological and anatomical traits in relation to the water level, cover of vascular plants and seed viability of L. loeselii in habitats with different water level fluctuations. Field studies of L. loeselii were carried out in nine localities and four habitat types: alkaline fen, calcareous fen with Cladium mariscus, transition mire and quaking bog. The fluctuations of seasonal water level were defined in the range from dry substrate to short time fl…
