Mobile Phones and Health Risks
2008
Epidemiological studies which have been conducted up to date have found little evidence linking short-term mobile phone use to an increased risk of brain tumors. Some studies have shown slight increases in risk for long-term mobile phone users (>10 years). These results are however based on small numbers and need confirmation. Keywords: mobile phones; health risks; brain tumors; epidemiological studies
Assessment of paradoxical anterior translation in a CR total knee prosthesis coupling dynamic RSA and FE techniques
2021
Purpose: The study aims were to assess the kinematic data, Internal-External (IE) rotation, and Antero-Posterior (AP) translation of the contact points between the femoral condyles and polyethylene insert and to develop a combined dynamic RSA-FE (Radiostereometric – Finite Element) model that gives results congruent with the literature. Methods: A cohort of 15 patients who underwent cemented cruciate-retaining highly congruent mobile-bearing total knee arthroplasty were analyzed during a sit-to-stand motor task. The kinematical data from Dynamic RSA were used as input for a patient-specific FE model to calculate condylar contact points between the femoral component and polyethylene insert. …
Mobile platform for online processing of multimodal skin optical images: Using online Matlab server for processing remission, fluorescence and laser …
2015
Mobile platform for multimodal skin assessment has been developed. Different illumination sources allow switching between modalities. Diffuse reflectance spectral imaging is provided by five LEDs, fluorescence is excited by 405 nm LEDs, and laser speckle by 650 nm laser diode. Handheld, battery powered device includes all light sources and color camera with USB. The core of the system is Linux OS embedded microcontroller. USB, FTP and HTML with JavaScript combination is used to create standard image transfer and control interface. In combination with built in WiFi access point it allows online skin images storage and processing. It means that data processing algorithms are located and updat…

Preoperative imaging of hilar cholangiocarcinoma: surgical evaluation of standard practises.
2004
UNLABELLED It was the goal of this study to compare the results of the preoperative diagnostic workup (ERC, MRC, and PTC) with the tumor extent of the surgical specimen in patients with hilar cholangiocarcinoma (hilCC). PATIENTS AND METHODS Between 9/97 and 12/2002 82 patients with hilCC were treated at our institution. In 59 patients tumor resection was feasible. Preoperative ERC, MRC and PTC - blinded for the idendity of the patients - were analysed retrospectively and compared with the surgical specimen. RESULTS PTC resulted in significantly superior visualization of the bile ducts including the hilar lesion compared to ERC and MRC (p < 0.01). ERC, MRC and PTC were correct in predicting …
ENDOSCOPIC TREATMENT FOR ACUTE BILIARY PANCREATITIS
1999
Worldwide, gallstones are the most common cause of acute pancreatitis, a disorder that ranges in severity from mild to life-threatening. How gallstones cause pancreatitis is hotly debated, as is the need for endoscopic decompression of the bile duct in sick patients. This article is a critical analysis of the existing data.
Ambulatory Treatment and Telemonitoring of Patients with Parkinson’s Disease
2011
Body sensor networks (BSN) promise to enhance quality of life in common human habitats. The very next and natural step towards the improvement of the already valuable applications based on BSN is the incorporation of body actuator devices which adapt its actuation dynamically based on the information provided by the body sensors, thus forming Body Sensor and actuator Networks (BS&AN). This paper shows how BS&AN can be exploited to create an innovative system to support the treatment of patients affected by Parkinson’s Disease (PD). The combination of clinical and technological knowledge in BS&AN allows to significantly improve the quality of life of patients suffering from PD.
Expression of Cytokeratin 7 and 20 in Pathological Conditions of the Bile Tract
2003
Expression of cytokeratin 7 (CK7) and cytokeratin 20 (CK20) helps to establish the origin of biliary and metastatic carcinomas. We investigated the expression of CK7 and CK20 in inflammatory, metaplastic and neoplastic conditions of the bile ducts, and evaluated possible relationships between the CK expression pattern and extrahepatic bile duct/gallbladder carcinomas (EBDCs) or intrahepatic bile duct carcinomas (IBDCs). We used immunohistochemistry for the investigation of 48 formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded specimens grouped as: A) lithiasic or inflamed surgically resected extrahepatic bile ducts/gallbladders: all were CK7+/CK20+; B) percutaneous liver biopsies from patients with chronic …
Long-Term Evaluation of a Rat Model of Chronic Cholangitis Resembling Human Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis
2003
Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a chronic cholestatic disorder with a presumed autoimmune aetiopathogenesis. We have recently described a novel organ-specific rat model of fibrosing cholangitis induced by intrabiliary administration of the hapten-reagent 2,4,6-trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid (TNBS) with similarities to human PSC. In the present report, we have evaluated the long-term outcome of TNBS-induced cholangitis in this model. Mild stenosis of the common bile duct of female Lewis rats (n = 18) was achieved by subtotal ligation and cholangitis induced by TNBS injection (50 mg/kg) into the dilated bile duct after a second laparotomy. After 8 and 12 months, we found no evidence of …
Methylene blue-aided cholangioscopy in patients with biliary strictures: feasibility and outcome analysis
2008
BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Chromoendoscopy using methylene blue is employed in the gastrointestinal tract to delineate neoplastic lesions. We tested the value of chromoendoscopy during choledochoscopy for characterization of local inflammation, neoplasias, and other alterations in patients with biliary strictures. METHODS: Patients with suspected biliary lesions were scheduled for endoscopic retrograde cholangiography with subsequent cholangioscopy. After initial inspection of the bile duct, 15 ml methylene blue (0.1 %) was administered via the working channel of the cholangioscope. Newly appearing circumscribed or unstained lesions were judged according to their macroscopic type and staini…
