In post-infancy, multinucleated giant cell hepatitis is rare. Various conditions and diseases associated with post-infantile giant cell hepatitis have been described, but the pathogenesis remains unknown. In this paper we review the case reports of four patients (3 male, 1 female; aged 22 to 32 years) with primary sclerosing cholangitis and autoimmune hepatitis. The follow-up ranges from five to seven years. All patients showed cholestasis and repeated elevation of hepatic transaminases. Patients with viral infections, metabolic disorders and toxic influences were excluded. Erythrocyte deformability in macrocytosis determined by means of ektacytometry techniques

There is little information regarding the behaviour of red blood cell deformability in macrocytosis. We have determined in 114 patients with macrocytosis (MCV > 97 fL) and in 115 age and sex-matched subjects with normocytosis (VCM < 97 fL) erythrocyte deformability by means of ektacytometric techniques (Rheodyn SSD) measuring the erythrocyte elongation index (EEI) at 12, 30 and 60 Pa. Patients with macrocytosis showed statistically higher EEI at all the shear stresses tested when compared with controls (p < 0.001). A critical analysis of morbidity and mortality for pancreatico-duodenectomy was performed on 221 patients. During the 1960s and 1970s, the morbidity and mortality for pancreaticoduodenectomy were so high that many thought the operative procedure ought to be abandoned. During the 1980s, however, many centers reported mortality rates around 5% and a morbidity of 25% to 35%. Others still reported a mortality of more than 10% and a morbidity of up to 65%. A full conformational space analysis of bilirubin

Ab initio methods were utilized in a gas-phase systematic conformational search of bilirubin conformers. The whole molecule was divided into four fragments. Most stable conformers of them were employed to build 196 conformers of the complete bilirubin molecule. Initial geometries were optimized using HF/3-21G level of theory and the minimum energy conformers were then reoptimized at B3LYP/6-31G(d) level. Ridge-tile conformer was the most stable one, in perfect agreement with X-ray data. Heme oxygenase-1 can play a protective role against cellular stress. In colon cancer cells, these effects would be relevant to oncogenesis and resistance to chemotherapy. The aim of the study was to examine the effects of heme oxygenase-1 induction on cell survival in a human colon cancer cell line, Caco-2. Serum deprivation induced apoptosis, reduced Akt and p38 phosphorylation, and increased p21(Cip/WAF1) levels. Heme oxygenase-1 induction by treatment with cobalt protoporphyrin IX resulted in resistance to apoptosis, activation of Akt, reduction in p21(Cip/WAF1) levels and modification of bcl2/bax ratio towards survival. We studied the influence of thyroid hormones and vitamin A status on the regulation of UDP-glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) expression and the glucuronidation of thyroid hormones by UGTs. For this, we used an original model of rats fed with different vitamin A diets and implanted subcutaneously by osmotic minipumps delivering vehicle or thyroid hormones, which permitted the control of plasma thyroid hormone concentrations. The activity and expression of family 1 UGTs are correlated and were significantly modified by both thyroid status and amounts of retinol in the diet. Abstract SUMMARY In an alkaline picrate medium we demonstrated the occurrence of isosbestic points over the range 520–550 nm, the position depending on the bilirubin content and less on the albumin content. Bilirubin does not markedly modify the ratt constant of the reaction between creatinine and picrate, however, it does modify the intercept of the Ln ΔA vs t, plots. The absolute value of Ln ΔA varies with the concentration, though not with time, which indicates that bilirubin acts by consuming part of the initially present creatinine irrespective of its owr concentration at the wavelengths typically used in the creatinine determination.
