MADoSPRO: a new approach to molecular modelling studies on a series of DNA minor groove binders

2006

The aim of this work was devoted to develop a method to predict Delta G values for a series of minor groove binders. Starting from a matrix of docking dataset for 10 minor groove binders (known and not) to 20 DNA fragments, with various sequences, it was possible to analyze the interaction modes and to calculate the Delta G value for new derivatives through MADoSPRO procedure. The method allowed, through the QSPR analysis, to characterize the type of interactions in such complexes, that was demonstrated to be related to quantum chemical and electrostatic descriptors, in agreement with the information available in literature on the structural requirements of specific minor groove ligands. Physico-chemical evolution of low-pH cements : influence of the temperature and the retention mechanisme of alkalins

2010

Because of their high alkalinity, Portland cement (OPC)-based materials may have deleterious effects in an underground waste repository. A solution would be to use low-alkalinity cements (also referred as low-pH cements) generating interstitial solutions with a reduced pH (11 instead of 13.5 for OPC), and thus showing an improved chemical compatibility with the repository environment. In this work, the investigated formulations were based on binary (OPC / silica fume) or ternary (OPC / silica fume / slag or fly ash) blends, with high substitution levels of CEM I (from 30% to 80%). This research project met two main objectives: (i) study the chemical evolution of low-pH cements at 50°C or 80…

DNA minor groove binders: an overview on molecular modeling and QSAR approaches

2007

Molecular recognition of DNA by small molecules and proteins is a fundamental problem in structural biology and drug design. Understanding of recognition in both sequence-selective and sequence neutral ways at the level of successful prediction of binding modes and site selectivity will be instrumental for improvements in the design and synthesis of new molecules as potent and selective gene-regulatory drugs. Minor groove is the target of a large number of non-covalent binding agents. DNA binding with specific sequences, mostly AT, takes place by means of a combination of directed hydrogen bonding to base pair edges, van der Waals interactions with the minor groove walls and generalized ele…

Performance of a sustainable asphalt mix incorporating high RAP content and novel bio-derived binder

2019

The recent drive to find ways to increase sustainability and decrease costs in asphalt paving has led researchers to find innovative ways to incorporate more recycled materials and bio-derived binders into mixes with varying success. A new novel bio-derived binder made from refined pine chemistry stabilised with a polymer can increase the sustainability of asphalt mixes while maintaining pavement performance. Laboratory performance testing was conducted on asphalt mixes containing 50% Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) by mix weight and the novel bio-derived binder. Results show that the bio-derived binder outperforms the conventional 50/70 pen grade binder mixes with respect to resistance to…

First tests of mechanical harvest of Origanum vulgare L.

2003

In Italy Origanum vulgare L. is cultivated only in few areas and its production does not even satisfy the national market demand. Until now the interest on this crop has been very low because of the high cost of manual harvest and bunch binding. The aim of this work is to evaluate the use of a reaper-binder (made for harvesting cereal crops) for harvesting and bunch binding Origanum vulgare L. The tests were carried out in Sicily, in the summer of 2001. The mechanical harvest was carried out using the reaper-binder unmodified, but the results were not satisfactory. The machine was then modified reducing its forward speed and cutting height, in order to improve its working productivity and h…

NEW APPLICATIONS IN THE USE OF CELLULOSE PULP FOR THE INTEGRATION OF WOODEN SUPPORTS

2017

Cellulose pulp, mainly utilized as a support for cleaning stone material, in this study, is proposed as a filler for wooden supports. In the last 10 years, pulp has been used in many restoration works carried out in the laboratory of the Diocesan Museum (MDP) in Palermo, including both wooden sculptures and panel paintings. These artworks, exhibited in the MDP, are constantly monitored in order to evaluate the effectiveness of cellulose pulp as a filler, assessing its durability and bio-receptivity. In particular, structural characteristics, drying time, shrinkage, loss in weight, affinity to the pigments, etc., were simultaneously evaluated. Tests were also carried out on artificially aged…
