Anhydrous, dimeric vanadyl(IV) complexes of Schiff bases derived from [1+1] condensation of salicylaldehyde (or its derivatives) and anthranilic acid, have been synthesized from CH3CN and were characterized by elemental analysis, FTIR, EPR, absorption, TGA, cyclic voltammetry and room temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements. These complexes were found to be oxidized by air in polar solvents like MeOH and DMF to V-V products. The E(1/2) values were found to be around 660 mV indicating that the carboxylate group favours vanadyl(IV) binding when compared to the alkoxo-bound vanadium complexes. Mutation Analysis of Core Binding Factor A1 in Patients with Cleidocranial Dysplasia

SummaryCleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) is a dominantly inherited disorder characterized by patent fontanelles, wide cranial sutures, hypoplasia of clavicles, short stature, supernumerary teeth, and other skeletal anomalies. We recently demonstrated that mutations in the transcription factor CBFA1, on chromosome 6p21, are associated with CCD. We have now analyzed the CBFA1 gene in 42 unrelated patients with CCD. In 18 patients, mutations were detected in the coding region of the CBFA1 gene, including 8 frameshift, 2 nonsense, and 9 missense mutations, as well as 2 novel polymorphisms. A cluster of missense mutations at arginine 225 (R225) identifies this residue as crucial for CBFA1 function. …

In previous studies we have shown that insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-II stimulates basal as well as ACTH-induced cortisol secretion from bovine adrenocortical cells more potently than IGF-I. The steroidogenic effect of both, IGF-I and IGF-II, is mediated through the IGF-I receptor and modified by locally produced IGF binding proteins. Further studies demonstrate that bovine adrenocortical cells do synthesize IGFBP-1 to -4 and that their secretion is regulated differentially by IGFs and ACTH. Effect of Confinement and Coulomb Interactions on the Electronic Structure of the (111) LaAlO3/SrTiO3 Interface

A tight binding supercell approach is used for the calculation of the electronic structure of the (111) LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface. The confinement potential at the interface is evaluated solving a discrete Poisson equation by means of an iterative method. In addition to the effect of the confinement, local Hubbard electron–electron terms are included at the mean-field level within a fully self-consistent procedure. The calculation carefully describes how the two-dimensional electron gas arises from the quantum confinement of electrons near the interface due to the band bending potential. Dietary Intake, Serum Hormones, Muscle Mass and Strength During Strength Training in 49 - 73-Year-Old Men

Effects of dietary intake on serum hormones, muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) and strength during strength training were studied in two groups of men: 1) strength training + nutritional counseling (n = 22, 59.1 +/- 6.1 yrs), and 2) strength training (n = 23, 58.5 +/- 7.1 yrs). Both groups performed strength training twice a week for 21 weeks. Counseling increased carbohydrate (p < 0.01) and fiber intake (p < 0.001) and polyunsaturated/saturated fat-ratio (p < 0.05) and decreased fat intake (p < 0.01). Coin metal adsorption on defective MgO(001) surface: ab initio study

First principles slab calculations have been performed for Ag and Cu adsorption on periodically distributed point defects (a single O2– or Mg2+ vacancy per 2×2 surface supercell) on the non-polar MgO(001) substrate. Using the procedure implemented in the CRYSTAL-03 code, both Fs and Vs centers were modeled by retaining in the vacancy the basis set of the missing O2– and Mg2+ ions, respectively, with the local relaxation of the nearest substrate ions. Adsorption of metal atom over the Fs center (2.4 eV vs. 2.1 eV per Cu and Ag adatoms, respectively) is much stronger as compared with regular O2− sites (0.6 eV vs. 0.4 eV, respectively). Anomalous binding sequence of CO ligands to an anionic triplatinum carbonyl complex

Abstract A systematic density functional theory study on the structures and binding energies of triplatinum carbonyls Pt 3 ( CO ) x q , with x  = 1–6 and q  = 0, −1, reveals an anomalous trend in binding energies of the CO ligands to the triangular platinum core, with the first three ligands strongly bound at terminal Pt sites, followed by weaker bound ligands at Pt–Pt bridge sites for x  = 4–6. This work provides a novel explanation to the anomalous CO binding trend reported in mid-1990s from collision-induced dissociation and photodissociation experiments.

We have studied the geometry, binding energy, interaction with the surface, barriers for diffusion, optical absorption, and the possibility for their observation using atomic force microscopy of (NaCl${)}_{\mathit{n}}$ clusters (n=1--48) on the (100) MgO surface. We address the questions at which cluster size do the adsorbed molecules lose their identity and how do strained clusters accommodate the strain. The relation between the structure of initial molecular fragments adsorbed at the surface and the structure of the corresponding thick film is discussed. Abstract Oxidations (electron transfers) of [Fe(CN)6]4− by [Co(NH3)4pzCO2]2+ and S 2 O 8 2 - have been studied in solutions containing the receptor N,N′,N″-(aminopropil)-tris (2-aminoetil) amina [Tren Aminopropil, TAL], which can incorporate [Fe(CN)6]4− and S 2 O 8 2 - but not the cobalt complex. The results can be explained using the Bronsted equation that allows to obtain the binding constant of the transition state, a parameter that the Pseudophase Model cannot provide.
