Interferon-alpha inhibits hepatitis C virus subgenomic RNA replication by an MxA-independent pathway.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) persists in the majority of infected individuals and is a major cause of chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Chronic hepatitis C is currently treated with interferon (IFN)-α or with a combination of IFN-α and ribavirin. The availability of an HCV replicon system (Lohmann et al., Science 285, 110–113, 1999) allowed the investigation of the effects of IFN on genuine HCV replication in cultured cells. It is shown here that IFN-α inhibits subgenomic HCV RNA replication in HuH-7 human hepatoma cells. Abstract Histones are thought to play a key role in regulating gene expression at the level of DNA packaging. Recent evidence suggests that transcriptional activation requires competition of transcription factors with histones for binding to regulatory regions and that there may be several mechanisms by which this is achieved. Abstract Hypothesis Macrocyclic amphiphiles form interesting self-assembling structures, including solid lipid nanoparticles, which have potential applications in drug encapsulation. MP2 Study of Physisorption of Molecular Hydrogen onto Defective Nanotubes: Cooperative Effect in Stone–Wales Defects

We use large-scale MP2 calculations to investigate the physisorption of molecular hydrogen on (9,0) defective carbon nanotubes (CNTs) of C72H18. These large (supra)molecular systems are typically studied using conventional DFT methods, which do not describe well the van der Waals interactions responsible for this process. Here we use CCSD(T)-calibrated MP2 calculations to estimate binding energies by considering four defective structures (hydrogenated divacancy, octagon-pentagon, and two Stone-Wales defects). The evolution and changing ecology of the African hominid oral microbiome

Significance The microbiome plays key roles in human health, but little is known about its evolution. We investigate the evolutionary history of the African hominid oral microbiome by analyzing dental biofilms of humans and Neanderthals spanning the past 100,000 years and comparing them with those of chimpanzees, gorillas, and howler monkeys. We identify 10 core bacterial genera that have been maintained within the human lineage and play key biofilm structural roles. However, many remain understudied and unnamed. Acute pancreatitis is an inflammatory process of the pancreatic gland that eventually may lead to a severe systemic inflammatory response. A key event in pancreatic damage is the intracellular activation of NF-κB and zymogens, involving also calcium, cathepsins, pH disorders, autophagy, and cell death, particularly necrosis. This review focuses on the new role of redox signaling in acute pancreatitis.
