Reaggregation and binding of cell wall proteins from Candida albicans to structural polysaccharides

Urea or hot sodium dodecyl sulphate extracted a significant amount of the same proteins from the matrix of the cell wall of the yeast form and mycelial cells of Candida albicans. Gel filtration analysis of the urea-extracted proteins revealed that they occurred in the form of large complexes which were unaffected by up to 8 M urea. Among them, proteins en route to becoming covalently associated within the wall scaffold were identified by their reaction with specific antibodies. When urea was removed by dialysis, some of these proteins specifically reassociated into large aggregates which bound strongly with ConA, whereas others remained soluble in smaller associated products. Abstract Various ab initio CI treatments are reported for the 3 Σ − g , 1 Δ g and 1 Σ + g states of O 2 with particular emphasis on the agreement obtained between calculated and experimental results for binding energies and bond distances of these species and also for transition energies between them. The utility of off-center s and p gaussians in describing the bonding process is stressed and the possibility of optimizing the configurations used in the calculations at each internuclear distance is considered.

The distribution of cartilage proteoglycan core protein (aggrecan) and cartilage proteoglycan link protein was investigated by in situ hybridization during different stages of human skeletal development. Aggrecan and link protein expression were confined to chondrocytes of the developing skeleton and other cartilaginous structures. Distribution and intensity of the signal was identical with aggrecan as compared to link protein probes. Parallel to the calcification of cartilaginous matrix, chondrocytes of this area lost the expression of aggrecan and link protein specific mRNA and stayed negative throughout the following stages of skeletal development. Bone mineral content (BMC/W) and density (BMD) were studied in 70- to 81-yr-old active male endurance-trained (long-distance runners, cross-country skiers, N = 67), strength-trained (throwers, weight-lifters, N = 14), and speed-trained (sprinters, jumpers, N = 16) athletes. A population sample of similar age (N = 42) served as a control group. The measurements were performed at the calcaneus by single-energy photon absorption. The endurance-trained athletes had higher bone width and depth, and the strength and speed-trained athletes higher bone depth than the control subjects. (1) Aim: To immunohistochemically evaluate the effect of a volume-stable collagen scaffold (VCMX) on periodontal regeneration. (2) Methods: In eight beagle dogs, acute two-wall intrabony defects were treated with open flap debridement either with VCMX (test) or without (control). After 12 weeks, eight defects out of four animals were processed for paraffin histology and immunohistochemistry. (3) Results: All defects (four test + four control) revealed periodontal regeneration with cementum and bone formation. Several new boron dipyrromethene/N,N-dimethylaminopyridine (BODIPY-DMAP) assemblies were synthesized as precursors for bimodal imaging probes (optical imaging, OI/positron emission tomography, PET). The photophysical properties of the new compounds were also studied. The first proof-of-concept was obtained with the preparation of several new BODIPY-labeled bombesins and evaluation of the affinity for bombesin receptors by using a competition binding assay. SNPs and taxane toxicity in breast cancer patients

Aim: In order to identify genetic variants associated with taxanes toxicity, a panel with 47 SNPs in 20 genes involved in taxane pathways was designed. Patients & methods: Genomic DNA of 113 breast cancer patients was analyzed (70 taking docetaxel, 43 taking paclitaxel). Results: Two SNPs associated with docetaxel toxicity were identified: CYP3A4*1B with infusion-related reactions; and ERCC1 Gln504Lys with mucositis (p ≤ 0.01). Regarding paclitaxel toxicity: CYP2C8 HapC and CYP2C8 rs1934951 were associated with anemia; and ERCC1 Gln504Lys with neuropathy (p ≤ 0.01). Phonon calculations in cubic and tetragonal phases of SrTiO3: A comparative LCAO and plane-wave study

The atomic, electronic structure and phonon frequencies have been calculated in cubic and low-temperature tetragonal SrTiO${}_{3}$ phases at the ab initio level. We demonstrate that the use of the hybrid exchange-correlation PBE0 functional gives the best agreement with experimental data. The results for the standard generalized gradient approximation (PBE) and hybrid PBE0 functionals are compared for the two types of approaches: a linear combination of atomic orbitals (CRYSTAL09 computer code) and plane waves (VASP5.2 code).
