Outcomes of Patients With Asymptomatic Aortic Stenosis Followed Up in Heart Valve Clinics

2018

International audience; Importance - The natural history and the management of patients with asymptomatic aortic stenosis (AS) have not been fully examined in the current era. Objective - To determine the clinical outcomes of patients with asymptomatic AS using data from the Heart Valve Clinic International Database. Design, setting, and participants - This registry was assembled by merging data from prospectively gathered institutional databases from 10 heart valve clinics in Europe, Canada, and the United States. Asymptomatic patients with an aortic valve area of 1.5 cm2 or less and preserved left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) greater than 50% at entry were considered for the prese…

General method for automated feature extraction and selection and its application for gender classification and biomechanical knowledge discovery of …

2020

Modern technologies enable to capture multiple biomechanical parameters often resulting in relational data. The current work proposes a generally applicable method comprising automated feature extraction, ensemble feature selection and classification to best capture the potentials of the data also for generating new biomechanical knowledge. Its benefits are demonstrated in the concrete biomechanically and medically relevant use case of gender classification based on spinal data for stance and gait. Very good results for accuracy were obtained using gait data. Dynamic movements of the lumbar spine in sagittal and frontal plane and of the pelvis in frontal plane best map gender differences.

Transgraft sac Embolization Combined with Graft Reinforcement for Refractory Mixed-Type Endoleak.

2018

International audience; An 80-year-old female underwent EVAR 4 years ago. She presented type II endoleak with sac expansion from 68 to 80 mm during 3-year follow-up after EVAR. Although she underwent translumbar percutaneous sac embolization, the AAA sac continued to enlarge, suggesting mixed-type endoleak including type I, II, and III. Transgraft direct sac angiography revealed endoleak cavity without demonstrable feeding vessel. Transgraft sac embolization using n-butyl cyanoacrylate and graft reinforcement was performed concurrently, without complications. The graft reinforcement consisted of graft extension for eliminating occult type I endoleak, and relining for eliminating occult type…

Computer-aided diagnosis system for characterizing ISUP grade≥2 prostate cancers at multiparametric MRI: A cross-vendor evaluation.

2019

International audience; Purpose: To assess the performance of a computer-aided diagnosis (CADx) system trained at characterizing International Society of Urological Pathology (ISUP) grade >= 2 peripheral zone (PZ) prostate cancers on multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) examinations from a different institution and acquired on different scanners than those used for the training database.Patients and methods: Preoperative mpMRIs of 74 men (median age, 65.7 years) treated by prostatectomy between 2014 and 2017 were retrospectively selected. One radiologist outlined suspicious lesions and scored them using Prostate Imaging-Reporting and Data System version 2 (PI-RADSv2); their CA…

Developing cellular systems in vitro to simulate regeneration.

2014

In the past two decades, cellular systems in vitro have progressed from predominantly monocellular testing models to study the toxic effects of new biomaterials for replacement to relevant human coculture systems for regeneration, often a combination of progenitor cells with novel biomaterials. Considerable progress has been made in understanding cellular cross talk and its contribution to the vascularization of bone. Future challenges include using the established physiological, that is, nonactivated, stem cell niches as a platform to develop coculture models, which will enable the true in situ regenerative niche to be investigated. Hypoxia and a changing inflammatory status are factors th…

Crosstalk between osteoblasts and endothelial cells co-cultured on a polycaprolactone-starch scaffold and the in vitro development of vascularization.

2009

The reconstruction of bone defects based on cell-seeded constructs requires a functional microvasculature that meets the metabolic demands of the engineered tissue. Therefore, strategies that augment neovascularization need to be identified. We propose an in vitro strategy consisting of the simultaneous culture of osteoblasts and endothelial cells on a starch-based scaffold for the formation of pre-vascular structures, with the final aim of accelerating the establishment of a vascular bed in the implanted construct. Human dermal microvascular endothelial cells (HDMECs) were co-cultured with human osteoblasts (hOBs) on a 3D starch-based scaffold and after 21 days of culture HDMEC aligned and…

Engineered microenvironments for synergistic VEGF - Integrin signalling during vascularization

2017

We have engineered polymer-based microenvironments that promote vasculogenesis both in vitro and in vivo through synergistic integrin-growth factor receptor signalling. Poly(ethyl acrylate) (PEA) triggers spontaneous organization of fibronectin (FN) into nanonetworks which provide availability of critical binding domains. Importantly, the growth factor binding (FNIII12-14) and integrin binding (FNIII9-10) regions are simultaneously available on FN fibrils assembled on PEA. This material platform promotes synergistic integrin/VEGF signalling which is highly effective for vascularization events in vitro with low concentrations of VEGF. VEGF specifically binds to FN fibrils on PEA compared to …

Differences in kinematic and match-play demands between elite winning and losing wheelchair padel players

2020

We aimed to compare the match-play and kinematic demands of the translation and rotation movements of elite wheelchair padel players as a function of match results. Twenty-two elite male players were video-analysed with a two-dimensional direct linear transformation (DLT) -corrected video system across seven matches of a professional tournament. Distance, turns, changes of direction, linear and angular speed, acceleration and the players’ heart rate (HR) were recorded. Losing couples in wheelchair padel covered greater distances than winners (P <0.001; r = 0.024) and did so at a higher speed (P <0.001; r = 0.06), while making greater efforts by accelerating (P <0.001; ∅ = -0.021), braking (…

Ischemic stroke: etiologic work-up with multidetector CT of heart and extra- and intracranial arteries

2010

[DOI:\hrefhttps://dx.doi.org/10.1148/radiol.1010080410.1148/radiol.10100804] [PubMed:\hrefhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2106292521062925]; To assess the potential of a single-session multidetector computed tomography (CT) protocol, as compared with established methods, for the etiologic work-up of acute ischemic stroke.\ Patients found to have recently experienced an ischemic stroke were recruited for this prospective study after institutional review board approval was obtained. Each patient was scheduled for two evaluation strategies: (a) a standard approach involving transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) and transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), duplex ultrasonography (US) of the n…

Common variation in PHACTR1 is associated with susceptibility to cervical artery dissection

2014

Item does not contain fulltext Cervical artery dissection (CeAD), a mural hematoma in a carotid or vertebral artery, is a major cause of ischemic stroke in young adults although relatively uncommon in the general population (incidence of 2.6/100,000 per year). Minor cervical traumas, infection, migraine and hypertension are putative risk factors, and inverse associations with obesity and hypercholesterolemia are described. No confirmed genetic susceptibility factors have been identified using candidate gene approaches. We performed genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in 1,393 CeAD cases and 14,416 controls. The rs9349379[G] allele (PHACTR1) was associated with lower CeAD risk (odds ratio…
