Abstract: The model of a spiritual woman, a laywoman (beata), was always the same all throughout Modern Age. In all women’s live…
Jan Karol Chodkiewicz (1686–1712) – szkic biograficzny młodego magnata
2021

Burning the Book: A Biographical Study of a Pedagogically Inspired Identity Crisis in Physical Education
1999
This paper focuses upon a fateful moment in the life of a Spanish student of physical education called Guillem (a pseudonym) in which the reading of a particular text as part of his course requirements instigated a powerful identity crisis. Biographical data are provided to contextualize the crisis and the impact it had on the life of this student. Next, the strategies used by Guillem to resolve his identity crisis are considered and the problems of self-change are highlighted. Finally, attention is given to the implications of this case for those who seek to engage in critical forms of pedagogy.
Turning Migration Disadvantage into Educational Advantage. Autobiographies of Successful Students with an Immigrant Background
2018
The article focuses on unexpected pathways of successful students with an immigrant background, in order to investigate the implication of this phenomenon from a theoretical, methodological and empirical point of view. After a review of the main sociological studies on “immigrant optimism” towards educational success, I will reflect on biographical approach, particularly suitable to study this topic. A on-going research project based on the collection of educational autobiographies of successful immigrant-origin students, attending upper secondary schools in Northern Italy, is presented. Then, the story of Destiny, a 16 years-old girl with Moroccan origin, is used as a case study to explore…

Zaangażowane badania jakościowe – perspektywa autobiograficzna
2018
The presented article is an attempt to reconstruct/retrospect my professional biography in its methodological section. It is a description of the way I went to become a biographic, narrative scholar. It is also a description of the reasons – theories, concepts, discussions and disputes that accompanied me on the way. I present my critical attitude towards Polish school and Polish education, posing questions about education, school and teacher. The second matter that organizes my research is the question about interpersonal relationships, intimacy, marriage, family and what is happening between: spouses, partners, parents and children. I ask what in our relationships with others favours a ha…
Irony in Thomas De Quincey's works
2014
Studying the works of De Quincey necessarily leads to three concepts almost impossible to define: autobiography, Romanticism, and all-too neglected irony. Whether rhetorical, tragic or “romantic”, irony expresses perfectly the many contradictions of the opium-eater. As the rhetorical tool of conflict and self-derision, claiming both individualistic and community values, sociable and provoking, irony is the way to redemption as much as the expression of deep unease, a way of pushing himself forward, or of withdrawing into the background. Caught between Romanticism and Victorianism, De Quincey questions the limits of his own identity and his status as an intellectual, and exploits reluctantly…

Między spotkaniem a mijaniem. Rahel Varnhagen, Hannah Arendt, Judith Butler
2020
The article is an attempt at capturing the relationship between the lives and creative attitudes of Rahel Varnhagen, Hannah Arendt and Judith Butler. Starting with Varnhagen’s biography written by Arendt, the essay’s author wonders about the philosopher’s writing strategy. Instead of a classic reconstruction of life, the biographer offers a collage of excerpts from Rahel’s letters with extensive commentary. This form encourages one to read Rahel Varnhagen as a narration about the author and her own struggle with Jewish and female identity. The second relationship analysed in the essay is the impact of Hannah Arendt’s texts on Judith Butler’s writings. Despite the criticism of the philosophe…
