Local and systemic mycorrhiza-induced protection against the ectoparasitic nematode Xiphinema index involves priming of defence gene responses in gra…
2012
International audience; The ectoparasitic dagger nematode (Xiphinema index), vector of Grapevine fanleaf virus (GFLV), provokes gall formation and can cause severe damage to the root system of grapevines. Mycorrhiza formation by Glomus (syn. Rhizophagus) intraradices BEG141 reduced both gall formation on roots of the grapevine rootstock SO4 (Vitis berlandierixV. riparia) and nematode number in the surrounding soil. Suppressive effects increased with time and were greater when the nematode was post-inoculated rather than co-inoculated with the arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungus. Using a split-root system, decreased X. index development was shown in mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal parts of my…

Cool barnacles: Do common biogenic structures enhance or retard rates of deterioration of intertidal rocks and concrete?
2017
Sedentary and mobile organisms grow profusely on hard substrates within the coastal zone and contribute to the deterioration of coastal engineering structures and the geomorphic evolution of rocky shores by both enhancing and retarding weathering and erosion. There is a lack of quantitative evidence for the direction and magnitude of these effects. This study assesses the influence of globally-abundant intertidal organisms, barnacles, by measuring the response of limestone, granite and marine-grade concrete colonised with varying percentage covers of Chthamalus spp. under simulated, temperate intertidal conditions. Temperature regimes at 5 and 10 mm below the surface of each material demons…
SAXS Study on Myoglobin Embedded in Amorphous Saccharide Matrices
2011
We report on Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) measurements performed on samples of carboxy-myoglobin and met-myoglobin embedded in low hydrated matrices of four different saccharides (trehalose, sucrose, maltose and lactose). Results confirm the already reported occurrence of inhomogeneities, which are not peculiar of trehalose samples, but appear also in maltose and lactose, and in some cases also sucrose, being dependent on the sample hydration and on the presence of sodium dithionite. This behaviour confirms our previous interpretation about the nature of the inhomogeneities, and prompt it as a possible general behaviour for highly concentrated sugar matrices.
The arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis a modulator of cadmium stress
2008
International audience; Ecosystems are submitted to various abiotic stresses, among which heavy metals represent major industrial pollutants. Cadmium (Cd), that has damaging effects on plant metabolism, occurs in agricultural environments through industrial pollution and human activities, including phosphate fertiliser and sewage sludge applications. Metal availability to plants can be modulated by soil microorganisms, such as arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi. In the present work, Cd effects on the model legume Medicago truncatula inoculated or not with the AM fungus Glomus intraradices have been studied at 3 levels: (1) plant biomass production together with green part chlorophyll quantif…
Establishment of Petunia hybrida as model for studying mycorrhiza-induced resistance
2012
Root pathogens play an important economical role in the production of vegetable and ornamental plants. They cause high losses especially in green house production and are difficult to combat by conventional methods, because the use of pesticides in soils or substrates is limited. The application of arbuscular mycorrhiza could be an alternative as mycorrhizal plants generally showed higher resistance against various soil-borne pathogenic fungi. The success of the inoculation is, however, not predictable and mechanisms behind the protective effects are largely unknown. The ornamental crop Petunia hybrida is among other solanaceous plants confronted with attack by root pathogens and was theref…
Proteins in Amorphous Saccharides: Structural and Dynamical Insights on Bioprotection
2011
We report on experimental and simulative insights on saccharide-based bioprotection, obtained through the study of proteins embedded in amorphous saccharide matrices. The data presented come from a complementary set of techniques (FTIR, MD simulations and SAXS), which provides a description of the bioprotection mechanism from the atomistic to the macroscopic level. The results concur to draw a picture in which bioprotection by saccharides can be explained in terms of a tight anchorage of the protein surface to a stiff matrix, via extended hydrogen-bond networks, whose properties are defined by all its components, and are strongly dependent on the water content. In particular, they show how …
Investigations into the development and role of a Mediterranean intertidal bioconstruction for coastal conservation: the Vermetid Reef
2017
Vermetid reefs are intertidal biogenic habitats created by a dense aggregation of mollusks, frequently cemented by calcareous algae, and are typical of sub-tropical and warm–temperate rocky shores. These bioconstructions are valuable key-habitats of the coastal zones, increasing their productivity and biological value. In the Mediterranean, the main vermetid reef builders belong to the genus Dendropoma and are associated to encrusting coralline red algae. These organisms are ecosystem engineers protected under international European Legislation, although vermetid reef conservation is limited by a lack of biological and ecological knowledge. The two-way interactions between biota and the phy…
