New potentially cytotoxic thiolatogold(I) complexes of 1,1′-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene

1996

Abstract 1,1′-Bis[chlorogold(I) diphenylphosphino] ferrocene (1) was chosen as the starting material to synthesize new thiolato gold(I) complexes. This has been achieved by substituting the chlorine atoms by monofunctional and bifunctional thiolates affording ‘open’ thiolatogold complexes and trimetallic ferrocenophane-type structures, respectively. The new 1,1′-bis(2,6-dithia-1-phosphanyl)ferrocene (7) containing directly linked P and S atoms was also prepared but no gold complex was obtained. Compound 2 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/n with a=10.2632), b=21.064(4), c=16.259(3) A , β=97.06(2)° and V=3.488(1) A 3 . The distance between the two gold atoms (3.06 A) indicates a…

Intraductal aspiration: a promising new tissue-sampling technique for the diagnosis of suspected malignant biliary strictures

2012

Brushing is the most commonly used technique for biliary sampling at ERCP, despite its limited sensitivity. To evaluate intraductal aspiration (IDA) as a new combined endoscopic technique for cytodiagnosis, its cellular adequacy, diagnostic accuracy for cancer detection, feasibility, and safety. Prospective, observational study. Single tertiary referral center. IDA cellular adequacy, diagnostic accuracy for cancer detection, feasibility, and safety. From April 2009 to September 2010, 42 consecutive patients with suspected malignant biliary stricture underwent ERCP, with tissue sampling obtained with IDA. IDA included performance of standard brushing in all patients. After standard brushing,…

Preliminary Results of ERAS Protocol in a Single Surgeon Prospective Case Series

2022

Background and Objectives: The aim was to compare the intra and postoperative outcomes between the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocol versus the standard of care protocol (SCP) in patients who underwent radical cystectomy performed by a single surgeon. Materials and Methods: A retrospective comparative study was conducted including patients who underwent radical cystectomy from 2017 to 2020. Length of stay (LOS), incidence of ileus, early postoperative complications, and number of re-hospitalizations within 30 days were considered as primary comparative outcomes of the study. Results: Data were collected for 91 patients who underwent cystectomy, and 70 and 21 patients followed …

Urinary Diversion: How Experts Divert

2014

To determine the rates of the available urinary diversion options for patients treated with radical cystectomy for bladder cancer in different settings (pioneering institutions, leading urologic oncology centers, and population based).Population-based data from the literature included all patients (n = 7608) treated in Sweden during the period 1964-2008, from Germany (n = 14,200) for the years 2008 and 2011, US patients (identified from National Inpatient Sample during 1998-2005, 35,370 patients and 2001-2008, 55,187 patients), and from Medicare (n = 22,600) for the years 1992, 1995, 1998, and 2001. After the International Consultation on Urologic Diseases-European Association of Urology In…

Smoking cessation and outcome of patients affected by non muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMI-BC)

2013

Introduction: Does a correlation exist between smoking cessation and recurrence of non muscle invasive bladder carcinoma (NMI-BC) after TUR and adjuvant intravescical chemotherapy? Up today just few retrospective studies tried to answer this question. There is evidence that quitting decreases the risk of recurrence but nowadays it is still controversial how and how long it takes from quitting to reduce the risk (1-3). The aim of the present study is to compare the recurrence rate in smokers, non smokers and former smokers and in particular to evaluate if and how the decision of quitting at diagnosis could change the patients’outcome. Patients and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the out…

Histophotometry: a new method for automated histological examination of solid tissue samples demonstrated on bladder cancer.

1979

The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the ability of a new method to discriminate between benign and malignant tissue. Tissue samples from three patients with bladder tumours and one patient with bladder diverticula have been examined by histophotometry. This method, based on the correlation of nuclear volume and nucleic acid contents per cell uses thick formalin fixed samples. The results are obtained by measurements averaging more than one hundred thousand cells per sample. By this histophotometric examination a clear differentiation between malignant and benign tissue could be achieved. It was also possible to determine the degree of malignancy and to differentiate between infiltr…

Urinary bladder enlargement across nine rodent models of diabetes: correlations with glucose and insulin levels

2021

AbstractThe urinary bladder is markedly enlarged in the type 1 diabetes mellitus model of streptozotocin (STZ)-injected rats, but much less data exist for models of type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Diabetic polyuria has been proposed to explain bladder enlargement. We have collected data on bladder weight and blood glucose from 16 studies representing 9 distinct rodent diabetes (7 T2DM) and obesity models; some included arms with diets and/or pharmacological treatments. Data were analyzed for bladder enlargement and for correlations between bladder weight on the one and glucose levels on the other hand. Our data confirm major bladder enlargements in STZ rats, minor if any enlargement in fructose-fed…

Endoureterotomy with the Lovaco technique for treatment of ureterointestinal strictures: outcomes in an experienced center and factors associated wit…

2021

INTRODUCTION The study aimed to present the outcomes of an endoureterotomy series using the Lovaco technique for the treatment of ureterointestinal strictures. Factors influencing the success or failure of this technique were also determined. MATERIALS AND METHODS Data were collected from all endoureterotomies for ureterointestinal strictures performed in a single-center between 2017 and 2020. Clinical variables and characteristics of the stricture were recorded in each case, and success was defined as the complete resolution of ureterohydronephrosis. Univariate analysis was used to correlate the variables recorded with procedural success or failure. RESULTS A total of 25 patients were recr…

Descending Simultaneous Measurement of the Urinary Bladder and Sphincter Pressures during Continuous Perfusion of the Urethra after Operations for In…

1973

Descending simultaneous measurement of bladder and sphincter pressures with continuous urethral perfusion (Heidenreich and Beck) is a method we employ to determine, and plot graphically, urethral resistance before and after surgery for incontinence in males and females in order to obtain an objective standard against which to assess postoperative results.
